HYDRAULIC APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 14, 1917. Serial No. 174,707.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, JOHN P. RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at orcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new" and useful Hydraulic Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hydraulic apparatus, and particularly to means for manually actuating a hydraulic motor.
It is the general object of my invention to provide hydraulic apparatus by. the operation of which continuous rotary motion of a driving shaft may be effectively obtained by manual reciprocation or other similar mechanis With this general object in view, one feature of my invention relates to the provision of a plurality of hydraulic cylinders each having a piston connected to a rocking lever or other actuating device, in combination with a rotary hydraulic motorcOnnect ed for operation from said cylinders. A further feature of my invention relates to the provision of connections from said cylinders to and from said motor so disposed that water forced from one cylinder or set of cylinders to said motor will be returned to the second cylinder or set of cylinders for further use.
Further features of my invention relate to arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and more specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, my hydraulic apparatus comprises two separate structures 10 and 11 suitably mounted upon a frame 12. Each of the structures 10 and 11 is composed of-one or more hydraulic cylinders 13 or 13 each connected by a short pipe 14 to stand pipes 15 or 15 and by a second short pipe 16 to stand pipes 17 or 17*.
Piston rods 18 and 19 extend vertically through the structures 10 and 11 and actuate pistons 20 in each cylinder 13 or 13. The pipes 14 and 16 connect with each cylinder plan view of the actuatmounted upon a shaft 32 from of a rocking lever near the bottom thereof and below the lower 'mit of travel of the piston 20 therein.
he piston rodsl8 and 19 are connected by links 21v to the opposite ends of a rocking lever 22 fixed to a shaft 23 mounted in bearings 24 secured to the frame 12. The shaft 23 may be actuated to reciprocate the piston rods in any convenient manner as by means of a pedal lever 25 (Fig. 2).
A hydraulic motor having a casing 30 is rigidly supported upon the structures 10 and 11, the wheel 31 of said motor being which power may be taken for any desired purpose. The standpipes 15 and 15 are connected to the upper part of the casing 30 by horizontal pipes 33 and 34, said pipes being provided with check valves 35 and 36 respectively which open toward the motor. The motor casing is also connected by a branched passage 37 to thestand pipes 17 and 17, and check valves 38 and 39 are provided in the branches of said passage 37, said valves opening away from the casing- 30.
aving described the construction of my improved apparatus, I will now describe its operation. Let it be assumed that the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 and that the piston rod 18 is moved downward through the operation of the pedal lever 25. As the rod 18 with its pistons 20 moves downward the water contained in the cylinders 13 of the structure 10 is forced through the pipes 14 to the stand pipe 15 from which it flows to the pipe 33 and past the check valve 35 to the casing 30 and wheel 31. The check valve 36 is closed, preventing any of the water from flowing through the pipe 34 to the opposite stand pipe 15 and connections 14.
The water is thus forced downward past the motor wheel 31 to the branched passage 37 The check valve 38 will be closed by the pressure upon its rear side from the cylinders 13 in the structure 10, and at the same time the pressure upon the check valve 39 will be relieved by the upward movement of the pistons 20 carried by the piston rod 19. The water flowing through the casing 30 will thus pass into the right-hand stand pipe 17 and through the short pipes 16 into the cylinders 13f of the structure 11 in which the pistons are rising.

36 to the motor casing This operation will continue until the pistons 20 in the structure 10 reach their lowest point, at which time the motion of the pedal lever and rocking lever 22 will be manually reversed. The operation will then be repeated with the water flowing from the cylinders 13 in the structure 11 to the stand pipe 15, the pipe 3a and past the check valve thence through 7, past the check valve 38, and left-hand stand pipe 17 and the cylinders 13 in the the passage 3 through the short pipes 16 to structure 10.
The reciprocating motion of the shaft 23 and lever 22 is thus changed by the hydraulie apparatus to a continuous rotary motion of the driving shaft 32. It will be noted that the transformation of the motion is causedby the interchange of water between the cylinders and that the n'lechanical moving parts are few in number and of the simplest construction. will be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention 'as set forth in Copies of this patent may be cylinders,
the claims, and I do not wish to be otherwise l-imited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is- 1. A hydraulic apparatus comprising two structures each composed of a plurality of cylinders, a piston rod for each structure having a piston in each cylinder thereof, means to actuate said rods simultaneously in opposite directions, a hydraulic motor, and connections between said cylinders and said m'otor whereby water forced from one series of cylinders flows past said motor to the opposite series of cylinders, thereby actuatingsaid motor.
2. A hydraulic apparatus comprising two structures each composed of a plurality of a piston ro'd for each structure having a piston in ea'c'h cylinder thereof, means to actuate said rods simultaneously in opposite directions, a hydraulic motor, separate pipes leading from each set of cyllinders to said motor, check valves in saidpipes permitting 'fiow toward said motor only, additional pipes from said motor to ieach'set of cylinders, and check valves in said additional p pes permitting flow toward said cylinders only.
