To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J AROME F. BniasoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lorenzo, in the county of Crosby and State of Texas, have invented certain useful Improvements in Holders for Sliding Doors and Windows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as builders hardware and more particularly relates to a holder for sliding doors and windows.
As the primary aim and object this invention contemplates the provision of novel clutch means operably mounted on a base which is adapted to be attached to a sliding member so that the clutch means may cooperate with an adjacent stationary member to maintain the sliding member in an adjusted position, the clutch means being constructed so as to operate in either direction so that the sliding member may be moved and is particularly adapted for use on'sliding doors and windows.
The invention has for an additional object to provide means for movably mounting the clutch member on the attaching base, resilient means cooperating with the mounting means and tensioned so as to normally maintain the clutch member in frictional engagement with a stationary object such as a window or door frame.
A more specific object of the present invention consists in the provision of means on the base which cooperate with the clutch member for limiting the movement thereof so as to insure an efiective frictional engagemcnt of the clutch member and to provide means on the head of the clutch member for aiding frictional engagement of the clutch member and for obviating scarring of the object with which the clutch member is maintained in frictional engagement.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efliciency high.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims, forming a part of this specification.
The preferred embodiment of the present invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing the device attached to a sliding window sash.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same with the cover plate removed, the dotted lines being indicative of the position assumed by the lever in releasing the clutch means.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the invention attached to a horizontal sliding door.
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail taken through the clutch head.
Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of the base or attaching plate forming a part of the casing.
Similar characters of reference are, employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly to the accompanying drawings there is provided an attaching base plate 1 formed desirably of metal and of a substantially inverted L- shaped configuration, the respective ends of the long portion of the plate having flanges 2 and 3 formed thereon and approximately at right angles thereto. The lower flange 3 is provided with a slot 4 for a purpose that will presently appear while each of the flanges 2 and 3 are respectively formed with short flanges 5 which project inwardly toward each other and have openings 6 formed therein. Fastening devices 7 serve to removably maintain the base plate in a sub stantially rigid position on a movable member such as a window sash 8 as indicated in Fig. 1 or horizontally sliding door 9 as indicated in Fig. 3.
As intimated, improved clutch means have been provided and in the present instance consist of a clutch member embodying a head 10 having a curved outer edge and a straight inner edge from the intermediate point of which projects a shank 11 which is flange portion 17 thereof arranged in a correspondingly formed groove 18 in the curved edge of the clutch head 10 and serves to facilitate frictional engagement betweenthe head and a window frame 19 as shown in Fig. 1 of a floor or door frame 13 as indicated in Fig. 8. Incidentally, the rubber strip 16 prevents scarring of'the object with which the head is in engagement. Cooperating with the shank 11 of the clutch member are limiting members or stops in the present instance in the form ofscrews 21 mounted on the outer face adjacent the outer edge of the outer portion of the base plate.
These stop screws are arranged. so as to be engaged by opposite sides of the shank 11 and limit the swinging movement of the clutch member while it is being arranged in frictional engagement with either a window frame or a door frame.
In order to normally hold the clutch member in frictional engagement with either a window frame or a door frame as the case may be suitable resilient means have been provided and in the present instance consist of a leaf spring 22, one end of which is rigidly mounted to a fastening device 23 carried by the front face of the base plate while the outer end bears against the handle portion 15 of the bell crank operating lever 13 'as indicated by the numeral 24.
Cooperating with the base plate in providing the casing for inclosing the clutch member and the operating means therefor is a cover plate 25 shaped correspondingly to the base plate and removably connected to the short flanges 5 through the medium of suitable fastening devices such as screws 26 the inner ends of which engage the openings 6 in the short flanges.
The operation of the invention may be reviewed as follows:.
Assuming that the parts have been assembled in the manner described and that the device is applied to a window sash and frame as illustrated in Fig. 1 during the upward movement of the sash the clutch member is held in an inoperative position by moving the handle portion 15 of the bell crank lever 13 toward the frame .and obviously during this movement of the bell crank lever about its pivot the clutch memher is drawn in close relation with the stop screws. Subsequent to the adjusting of the window sash to a desired height, the handle portion 14; is released and owing to the tension of the leaf spring 22 the lever 13 is moved in a reverse direction aboutits pivot 14 until the clutch head 10 engages the window frame. The lever striking the adjacent end of the slot, ofcourse, limits the undue outward movement of the clutch member. Slight downward movement of the window sash partially rocks the clutch headlO until the shank 8 strikes the adjacent pin 21 frame. It is to be understood however that on reverse movement of either the sash or the door the clutch member will move about its pivot a slight extent so that the opposite portion of its curved edge will be 'corre-- spondingly arranged in frictional engagement with a window frame or doorframe respectively to prevent movement in a re verse direction. i
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferredem bodiment of this invention and that various minor changes in detall of constructlon, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. a
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is I 1. A stop of the character described including a casing embodying a substantially L-shaped base plate having flanges on the lower; end of the long portion and on the upper side edge of the short portion thereof, the lower flange being provided with a slot, and a cover plate removably connected to the flanges, a clutch member including a head and a shank, a bell crank lever pivotally connected to the base plate and having the outer end pivotally connected to the shank, the handle portion of the bell crank lever being arranged through the slot in the flange and limited in its movement thereby, resilient means mounted 011 the base plate and bearing against the lever to normally hold the clutch member in frictional engagement with an object, and limiting means mounted on the base plate 'and cooperating with the shank for holding the clutch head in frictional engagement with an object.
2. A stop of the character described including a substantially inverted L-shaped base plat having flanges on the lower end of the long portion and on the upper side edge of the short portion thereof, the lower flange being provided with a slot, a correspondingly shaped cover plate removably connected to the flanges, a clutch member including a head and a shank, means mounted on the head for aiding frictional engagement of the head, a bell crank lever pivotally mounted on the base plate and having the outer end 'ofrthe short outer portion pivotally connected to the shank, the handle portion of the bell crank lever being armounted on the outer faces of the short porranged through the slot in the lower flange tion of the base and adjacent the outer edge 10 and limited in excessive movement thereby, thereof and arranged upon opposite sides a leaf spring having one end rigidly conof the shank to the clutch member so as to nected to the base plate and the opposite be contacted by the shank to hold the head end bearing against the handle portion of in frictional engagement With an object.
