J. L. WRIGHT.
GAME AND GAME APPARATUS.
APPLICATION man sEPT.25. 191s.

Q o I t z 27 1M 1 JOHN- LLdYD WRIGHT, oFcHIcAeo, ILLINOIS.
GAME AND GAME 'AIZPARATUS.
1,268,659. it i To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, JOHN LLOYD WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games and Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improved game and game apparatus, the game being known as Hobbyhorse checkers.
The elements for playing the game are a checker-board and playing pieces consisting of horses and men, these pieces, being of unique construction and the men being adapted to be mounted on or dismounted from the horses, all these combinations forming part of the game when played.
On the accompanying drawing Figure 1 diagrammatically represents in plan view an ordinary checker-board with the sixty-four squares,
Fig. 2 is a perspective elevational view of one of the men, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the horses with a man mounted thereon.
5 represents a checker-board which may be of ordinary construction with the sixtyfour checker squares 6. The checker squares may be colored as desired, as shown one-half are red and the alternate squares are white.
The man shown is turned up of a single piece of wood and comprises the cylindrical body 7, the lower section being ofreduced diameter vertically out or slotted as indicated at 8 to leave the semi-cylindrical legs 9 and 10 with the semi-cylindric flanges 11 and 12 at their lower ends forming supporting bases or feet. Above the body part is the reduced cylindrical section 13 representing the neck and head, and the upper end of this section is colored to represent the cap 14.
The horse is of unique design constructed entirely of wood. A rectangular flat piece of wood is cut and notched to form the body 15, the neck 16, head 17, cars 18 and tail 19. The front legs 20 and 21 of the horse are of wood and are secured at angles with each other, under the neck 16 and against the shoulder 22. The legs may be separate pieces, or part of a V shaped piece of wood. The rear legs 23 and 24 are secured to the body 15 in the notch 25. The slot 8 of the man is of a width to easily receive the body Specification of Letters Patent.

of the horse as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and pins 26 and 27 may be provided at the top of the horse body for centering and holding the man thereon and also to represent a saddle.
The game is intended to be played by two people and the pieces are moved back and forth much in the same manner as in the game of checkers, four horses and twelve men being used by each player, the men on one side having caps of different color from those on the other side, Fig. 2 showing a white cap and Fig. 3 showing a red cap. The horses and men may also be difi'erently colored. To win, one player must eliminate from the board by jumping all of the men A man can move, jump, mount and dismount. A hobbyhorse has no privilege, while a horse-man, that is a hobbyhorse with a man thereon, can move and jump. A man can move forward only, while a horse-man can move forward or backward. A man can jump another man only, while a horse-man can jump any piece on the board. A man can mount by jumping onto a hobbyhorse from an adjoining checker space, and a man can dismount by jumping over a horse-man whereupon the man on the horse is eliminated from the to the exact construction of the pieces, as
changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim as follows:
1. A player piece for checker-boards consisting of a hobbyhorse and a man, said horse consisting of a fiat rectangular piece of wood notched transversely to represent the body, neck, head and tail parts and wood pieces secured at their upper endsto the ends of the body and extending therefrom at angles with each other to form legs, said man being turned from a single piece of wood and slotted at its lower end to be placed astride the horse body.
2. Player pieces for checker boards comprising a hobbyhorse and a man, said horse consisting of a flat piece notched to represent a body and head and having legs secured thereto, said man being a piece of ma- .man and horse can be used either separately 'terial ofgeneral cylindrical shape having oras-asingle'unit. its lower end slotted longitudinally to 'form' In Witness whereof I hereunto subscribe 10 legs and having flanges at the lower ends of my, name this: 19th.:1ay of September, A. D.
5 the legs, said flanges enabling the man to 1916.
stand alone and said slot enabling theman to be placed astride the horse whereby said JOHN LLOYD WRIGHT.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for fiye eents each, by addressing the fcommissi oner of Patents,
