Description
0. K. TRUITT.
PINWHEEL.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 21, 19H.
v OWEN K. TRUITT, 0F GARRETT PARK, MARYLAND.
rrnwHEEL.
To' all whom it may concern:
Be'it known thatI, OWEN K. TRUrrr, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Gar- I rett Park, in the countyof Montgomery and State "of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pinwheels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
' This invention comprises a pinwheel and a novel method of constructing the same.
It is contemplated among other objects to produce a device of this character from a. blank or blanksso that when folded to the proper form there will be displayed upon the face of the finished product a plurality of different colors bearing a previously defined arrangement to one another.
It is also an object of the invention to associate with the vanes of the pin wheel when properly assembled, a tie member extending from point to point in such a manner as to form an additional binding or bracing for the vanes and add tothe ornamental appearance of the device.
A further object of the invention is to devise a method of producing an instrumentality of this character which method will eliminate some of the steps previously utilized, and at the same time produce a change in the general structure and ornamental appearance of the device itself.
Further objects and advantages will in part be apparent and in part be brought out in the specification which follows.
A drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention is hereto appended in which the following views are shown.
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation;
Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are plan views of component parts of the device.
Referring specifically to these drawings, 1 designates a face portion of a blank and 2 a back portion of a different color preferably. In this instance, the face is shown as white and the back portion as blue. In the. construction of a pin wheel from a blank of this type the blank is cut by diagonal lines 3 extending toward the center of the blank which contains a perforation 4. The outer corners of the blank are also provided with perforations or openings 5, which are adapted to be folded inwardly to bring the perforations 5 into alinement with the opening 4: in the center of the blank, as best seen in Fig. 1. Before the corners have been folded Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentcui June 4, 1 918.
Application filed. June 21, 1917. Serial No. 176,070.
into this position, the blank 6 having a central perforation 7 is placed upon the blank 1 so that the central perforation 7 of the blank 6 will register with perforation 4: in blank 1. When in this position, the corners of the blank 1 are folded over so that their perforations 5 register one with another whereupon a fastening element 8 is inserted securing them together and a pin or the like 9 is passed through the alined openings and suitably secured to a handle or the like 10,
The pointed ends of the vanes left free after this folding operation are provided with perforations or openings 11 through which there is adapted to be passed an additional bracing or securing means 12 in the form or a ribbon and which may likewise be of a color and arrangement which will lend itself suitable to the decorative appearance of the device. In like manner a ribbon 13 may be entwined in and out among the folded portions in the center of the device to form an additional securing means therefor and add to its attractive appearance.
In practice, and as herein illustrated, the face portion of the blank is white, the back portion thereof is shown as blue and the insert-blank is red. When the back portion has been folded over and secured as shown in Fig. 1 the efiect is to present to the .eye an arrangement of colors wherein red, white and blue predominate in the color scheme and present a very attractive appearance. This may be aided by the interlacing of the additional bracing members 12 and 13, the combination forming a neat and attractive device of this kind which is easy to manufacture and has a minimum number of parts.
It will be understood that this same effect can be produced by using two separate blanks one to form the face portion and one to constitute the back portion of the device, each blank being of a different color, or this same effect may be produced by a single blank having on its face portion one color and a back portion of a different color, and the present disclosure is intended to embody these two forms.
It will be also understood that while the insert-blank 6 is herein disclosed as square, yet I do not wish to confine myself to this particular shape as it may be with equal facility made round, diamond or star shaped, or in fact any shape that would lend itself to additional ornamentation, as occasion may demand.
meli t together at a point inte ip While I have disclosed theinvention in the embodiment herein set forth, it' will be understood that I do not wish tolimit' my self to the precise form of this disclosure as many changes in the structure and arrange ment of the parts may be made Without departing from vthe spirit of "the invention or- Y' SI an. rticle .Of manuia fi gesipi i Wheelon the like comprising" aface portion 1 .3 "1 i .7 Liv-Wu I-1Jw of one color; a back port on of a d fferent l a' el po tmf b i g; cut om he r o ns w di the me: n p y ed centrally on the corners openings dap o be; b u ht ififid register; sa
