COMBINED ROLLER AND HARRQW.
q Specification of Letters Patent.
application filed December 22,1917. Serial No. 208,371.
'1 b all whom it may concern: 4
Be'it known that I, DOMER A. Burns, a
' citizen of the United States, residin at frange1nent of the several Miller, in the county of Oleburneand tate of Arkansas, have inventedcertain new and. useful Improvements in Combined Rollers and Harrows, of which the following is, a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. .This invention relates to certain improvements ina combined roller and harrow and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of thisgeneral character having a novel and improved connection between the roller structure and the harrow whereby the harrow may be adjusted with convenience and facility relative to'.-the roller structure.
It-is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this generalcharacter hav-] ing novel and improved means whereby the zharrow may be vertically adjusted as the occasions 0 practice may require.
The invention consists inthe details of construction and in the combination and ararts of my im-' proved combined roller and harrow whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient andfadvantageous for use, as will be herein- The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my'inventiofi may be-the better. understood, I will now proceed to describe the same was reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
. Figure 1 is a view intop plan of a comblned roller and harrow constructed 1n accordance With an embodiment of my invention, the harrow lifting mechanism being omitted;
Fig. 2 "is a'view in side elevation of the device as herein disclosed; I
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view partly in top plan and partly in section,
"illustrating the connection between .the lifting lever and the rod engaged with the harre n .tially on the line 4. i of Fig. 2.
* @Figidis a sectional view taken substan JAE-disclosed in the accompanying drawimgetIt denotes a frame preferably rectangu Ian-Tin form and which includes the removblefront transverse beam 1 held in applied it position throughthe medium of the bolts 2 i I for holding themember'br block 8' or the like, as is believed. to be clearly illus trated in Fig. 1.
Coacting with theremovable beam 1 is a suitable hitching means 3. s I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself as to the type ofhitching means employed, a detailed description and illustration thereof is believed to be lunnecessary. The, side beams 5 of the frame F areprovided at substantially their longitudinal centers with dependlng bearings 4 affording mounting for theroller R arranged within the frame F.
Straddling the rear portion of the side beams 5 of the frame F are the elongated members 6 in cross section substantially in the form of an inverted U and having their upper intermediate portions forming the racks 7 disposed longitudinally of the side beams 5..
Surrounding each of the members 6 and the adjacent side'beam 5 is the sliding member or block 8 and disposed through the upper'portion of said member or block 8 is a latch 9 coacting with the adjacent rack? movement longitudinally of'the member 6. Coating with thelatch 9 is a conventional operating means 10 mounted upon the upper end portions of the upstanding lever 11 also carried by the member or block 8.
The
against upstanding lever 11 affords convenient means whereby the member or block 8 may move longitudinally of the member 6 after theklatch 9 has been disengaged from the rac 7. v
H denotes a harrow comprising the transversely disposed beams 12 arranged in parallelism and having engaged therewith as at 14 andlt, ground engaging members is also to be understood that the shank 20 of. each of the ground engaging members 15 underlies the front or forward beam 12. To reinforce the connection in the beam 18, I employ straps 21 pivotally engaged at their outer extremities with certain of the pivotal members 14' and have their inner extremities overlying the beam 18 and in overlapping relation. The overlapping portions 22 thereof are pivotally engaged with the member 17 coacting with the inner or rear beam 12.
Pivotally'engaged with the front or forward end portion of the beam 18 is a clevis 23 having swinging movement in a vertical path, and said clevis 23 is disposed through an eye member 24 extending rearwardly from the lower end portion of an lip-right 25' carried by the rear beam 26 of the frame F and positioned at the longitudinal center thereof. Coacting with the upright 25 and the rear beam 26-are the brace members 27.
. with an eye 34 throu rected a clevis 35 pivotally engaged with The upper end portion of the lip-right 25-is continued by the forwardly directed extension 28 which serves as a support for the seat- S. Suitably engaged with the for-' ward or free end portion ofthe extension 28 are -the downwardly diverging brace members or supports 29 anchored at their lower extremities to the inwardly directed arms 30 positioned at the forward ends of the side beams 5 of the frame F. It is also to be stated that the front beam 1 is directly engaged with the arms 30. 1
Each of the side beams 5 of the frame F rearwardly of the member 6 is provided with an upstanding guide 31 herein dis closed as an eye-member and through which is freely directed a rod 32. The forward end vportion of the rod 32 is pivotally engaged as at 33 with the upper portion of the member or block 8. The rear or opposite end portion of the rod 32 is provided gh which is loosely dithe outer end portion of a section of the forward or front beam 12 of the-barrow. It is also to be noted that the clevis 35 is movable about a vertical axis.
Pivotally engaged. with the rear end por-' tion of the beam 1 8 and capable of adjustment longitudinally thereof is theup standing clevis 36 freely disposed through the eye 37 formed'at the lower end portion of the upstanding rod 38.
M denotesa handle member comprising two separated rigid strips 39 arranged in parallelism and which overlie the opposite faces of the rearwardly' disposed plate 40 and pivotally engaged therewith as indicated at 4:1. .The plate 40 is substantially semi-circular in elevation and extends rearwardly from the central portion of the upright 25. At a predetermined point intermediate the lengths thereof, the strips 39 are provided with the opposed outward olfset portions a2 between which is arranged an annular or eye member 43 provided with the diametrically opposed trunnions l i piv-v otally engaged with said offset portions 42. .The rod 38 is loosely disposed through the weenie through the-rod if 38 and the annular 38 below the member M and in close pron imity to the eye 37 is a second stop 4C6. In v terposed between the step 46 and the air.
nular or eye member 38 is an exp'ansible member 47 herein dlsclosed as a ="convene tional coil sprmg encircling the rod 38 and which serves to'constantly urge thebeam downwardly.
Suitably secured between the outer fentreniities of the strips 39 of themember M- is the hand grasp 48 having pivotally ens gaged therewith the lever 49 of the mechanism 50. with the segmental rack 51 formed in the periphery of theplate' lO whereby the beam latch The mechanism 50 coact's 18 or more particularly the'harrow struc ture may be readily and eilfectively held at various elevations relative to the ground or other surface upon which the device may be resting or traveling.
The members 6 may be beams 5 of. the frame F in any manner desired but herein are disclosed holding members or pins 52 which are disposed transversely through such members and co held to the side i acting beam 5. By adjusting the members 1 or'blocks 8 longitudinally of the side beams 5 of the frame F, it will be at once 1581fevident that any desired angle may be given to the harrow structure and in the event it is not required to use the harrow structure, the same may be readily rendered inoperative by raising the handle member ilpwardl ll also find it of advantageto provide the rear beam 26 oftheframel at substantially its longitudinal center with a de-' pending member 56 provided at its lower end with a shoe 57 adapted to contact with the ground or other surface which serves to prevent over-balancin of the frame F when the barrow structure ll tion. a a
I From the" foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a combined. rollerand harrow constructed in'accordance with.-
ire
is in elevated posimy invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susce tible of some'change and modification wit out departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish tobe understood as limiting myself tothe precise arrangement and formation of the several part herein shown in'carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
