Description
B. J. SCHWAB.
HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 20, I917 Patented June 4, 1918.
INVENTOR ff/Vfl/FJ 1/ 507K495;
ATTORNEYS WITNESSES BERNARD J. SCHWAB, OF MIAMI, ARIZONA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1918.
Application filed March 20, 1917. Serial No. 156,019.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD J. SGHWAB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Miami, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hinges for window shutters, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified which may be connected to the window to permit the shutter to swing outwardly into open position, to act in the nature of an awning,
or to swing inwardly into closed position to prevent the entrance of dust, insects, and the like, and wherein means is provided in connection with the hinge for permitting the easy removal of the shutter without detaching the hinge.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section with the shutter closed;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the shutter open;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section at one of the hinges;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the third leaf of the hinge,
Fig. 5 is an edge view of the hinge,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the hinge.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a window comprising the usual casement 1, and a shutter comprising a frame 3 of suitable size and of rectangular form, which is closed by a covering of canvas 4 or the like, the said covering being held on the frame by the holding strips 5.
The particular construction of hinge is provided for connecting the upper end of the frame to the casement. A strip 6 is secured to the easement at the top thereof, and the shutter frame is hinged to this strip by means of the hinge shown more particularly in Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6. The said hinge comprises leaves 7 and 8, the leaf 8 being of greater width than the leaf 7 and extending beyond the same when the leaves are closed, and being provided with a pair of slots 9 at the extended edge and beyond the edge of the leaf 7.
The leaf 7 of the hinge is connected to the strip 6 by means of the usual screws,
and the leaf 8 is connected to the up er end of the frame 3 by means of the plate 10 shown in Figs. 6 and 8. The said plate is secured within a rabbet in the top of the frame, by means of screws as shown, and the ends of the plate 10 are bent to overlie the plate in spaced relation, as indicated at 11. This plate 10 isof a length to permit the leaf 8 to slip beneath the flanges 11, and to be held in this position by the said flanges, and the leaf is of suflicient width to extend beyond the frame, as shown in Fig. 6, when it is in place.
A second plate 12 is secured to the inner face of the upper cross member of the frame 3, by means of'screws, as shown, and this plate 12 has at its upper end a pair of books 13 which are adapted to engage the slots 9, as shown in Fig. 3, to prevent displacement of the leaf 8 from theplate 10. It will be understood that two hinges are provided in connection with each shutter, the hinges being arranged near the opposite side edges of the shutter.
In placing the shutter the leaf? of the hinge 7-8 is secured to the strip 6, and the plate 10 is secured to the frame. The leaf 8 is now passed beneath the over-lying flanges 11 of the plate 10, after which the hooks 13 of the plate 12 are engaged with the slots 9 and the plate 12 is then secured to the frame.
I claim:
A hinge comprising a plurality of leaves hinged together, one of the leaves being of greater width than the other and having slots at its extended edge, said narrow leaf being adapted for connection with one ele' ment, holding plates for connecting the other leaf to the other element, one of the said plates being adapted for attachment to the other element and having overlying flanges for engaging the ends of the said wider leaf, the second holding plate having hooks for engaging the slots and being adapted for connection with the inner face of the said other element.
BERNARD J. SCHWAB.
