METALLIC ruine-casus.
Specieation of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2d, tml@ upplioation led August 11, 1915. Serial No. 44,868.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. COCHRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Filing-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic filing cases, the primary object being to provide a generally improved metallic filing or transfer case particularly designed and adapted to be stacked upon and to interlock with a subjacent case 'or unit to form suitable tiers as required in the transfer or ling and preservation of letters, documents, and the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved light weight reinforced metallic case body, the present embodiment being particularly designed and v adapted for use as a metallic transfer case.
A still further object is the provision of an improved metallic filing drawer or receptacle together with improved means of mounting and securing such filing drawer in the case body.
A still further object is the provision of an vimproved metallic follower for a filing drawer together with improved means for detachably securing and adjusting such follower in the drawer.
With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel lconstruction, arrangement, and combination ofparts, hereinafter described, illustrated in some of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, 'and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. y
Referring to the drawings forming'a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the improved ling case or unit and illustrating the manner in which one case or unit may be stacked upon and interlocked with another or subjacent unit.
Fig. 2, a reduced rear elevation of the same, particularly illustrating the improved flanged drawer protecting stops at the rear.
Fig. 3, a cross sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4, a perspective view of the improved filing drawer or receptacle, removed, certain portions being broken away for the purpose of clearer illustration of the parts.
Fig. 5, a reduced plan view of one of the drawer head blanks before being formed up.
Fig. 6, a view of the metallic blank for drawings.
rlFhe improved metallic lingy case comprises an open or double ended case body formed of a single blank of sheet metal and notched and folded along-fthe lines indicated in Fig. 6, to form a top 1, and sides 2, the latter terminating, in the present instance,
in inwardly projecting drawer sustaining slide ways 2, said slide ways, in the present.
instance, being spaced apart to form an open bottom or recess normally closed by the improved metallic filing drawer or receptacle ereinafter described.
The metallic blank forming the top and sides of the case body is provided with suitable notches 2", (see Fig. 6) along the lines to be folded to form the upper corners of the case body, and is also provided with corner notches 2e, said notches 2b, and 2c, corresponding in depth to the marginal portions 2d, and 2, at the opposite ends of the blank whereby said marginal portions are adapted to be folded inwardly and outwardly, rel spectively, for thepurposes now mentioned. Upon reference to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the marginal portions`2d, are bent inwardly to form flanged drawer protecting stops adapted to abut against the marginal edges of the rear drawer head and not only stop the drawer in its normal -or closed position but to exclude the contents of such drawer from foreign substances such as dirt, dust, and the like.
As a means ofsupporting and reinforcing the top and sides of the case body as well as adapting the latterlto be stacked upon and interlocked with the adjacent case or unit, the ends of the case body are surrounded and suitably secured to a channel bar supporting frame 3, the latter being preferably electrically welded to the walls of the case body and the free ends preferably meeting at the bottom of the case as at 3, and are suitably lll@ form to form the frame. It will be apparent upon reference to Fig. 1, that the front margnal portions 2e, of the top and sides of the case body are bent upwardly and outwardly,
respectively, to engage with the front edges of the channeled sides of the supporting frames are provided withv interlocking filler bars or members 4, depending or pro]ecting downwardly to form sanitary supporting legs for the first or lowermost case or unit, and to form interlocking or stacking members adapted to be received and seated in the upper portions of the side channels of the subjacent supporting frames lof a subjacent case or unit when stacked.
As a means of stopping the drawer or receptacle when fully withdrawn to its open position as well as assisting in excluding dust and dirt from the drawer contents when closed, the lfront portion of the top of the case body is provided-with a depending or flanged drawer stop 5, the latter being adapted to be engaged by the upper marginal edge of the rear drawer head `when the drawer is fully withdrawn and when the drawer is moved to its closed position the upper marginal edge ofthe front drawer head is adapted to come into engagement with and cover the same as clearlyv shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
The improved metallic filing drawer or receptacle comprises a bottom section 6, provided with median and side channel runners 6a, and 6b, respectively, said bottom section being also provided with vertical sides 6, terminating at their t`op in reinforced or lemmed edges 6d.
The front and rear drawer heads 7 and 8, respectively, are each formed of a single blank of sheet metal notched at the corners and adapted to be folded along the lines indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5, of the drawings so as to form marginal side and bottom portions 7, and 8a, respectively, adapted to be bent inwardly and welded to the bottom and side portions or sections 6 and 6, of the drawer, the upper marginal portions 7 b and 8", of the drawer heads being preferably bent'downwardly to form a pro# tecting edge or hem as shown. The drawer heads 7 and 8, strengthened and reinforced by means of side bars or strips 9, which latter also act to properly protect and support the drawer contents, as well as affording ready access to the latter and saving material in the drawer construction.
It will be observed that the side channel runners. or skids 6, of the improved drawer rest upon and coperate with the drawer susare preferably further taining slide ways 2, of the sides of the ca se body and coperate with such slide ways 1n yforming a proper support and sliding surnot only to lessen friction in the movements of the drawer but also serving to exclude dust and dirt from the drawer contents.
The central or median runner or section 6, not only serves to reinforce this portion of the drawer but forms a suitable channel or slide way for receiving and containing the follower rod 10, and the follower securing lugs or members 11, of the improved metallic follower to be now described.
The metallic follower 12, is formed of a single blank of sheet metal bent upon itself at its'base to form a horizontally extending supporting base or section 12, the latter being adapted to slide upon the bottom section 6,- preferably welded to the intermediate portion 11a, of the securing lugs or members 11, as-shown, it being also apparent that, in the present instance, the follower. securing members correspond substantially in dimensions to the median runner or panel section 6", thereby more effectively guiding the yfollower 12, and such vertical follower is preferably reinforced at its top by means of a reinforcing hem 12", as shown most clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
As a means of removably mounting the follower rod within the filing drawer the inner lower portions of the drawer heads are provided with depending spring tongues 13, welded or otherwise suitably secured to the drawer heads, the lower or free ends of said spring tongues being provided with openings 13, adapted to removably receive and contain the ends of the follower rod, it being apparent that the ends of such rod may bc readily inserted or removed by pressure upon the free ends of the depending spring tongues.
If desired the lower front corners of the case body may be provided with drawer sustaining rollers 14, mounted .in struck out dcpending lugs 15, of the front portions of the slide ways 2, and adapted to coperate with the side runners 6", of the drawer, as illusf naoaooa having bottom and end sections normally tively.
2. A metallic tiling case, comprising a single blank of sheet metal formed into top. and side sections, said side sections terminating in drawer sustaining slide ways.
spaced from each other forming anl open bottom, end frames surrounding said top and side sections and extendin across said open bottom, and a drawer having a bottom section provlded with side runners mounted on said slide ways and provided with heads normally forming the ends ofl said filing case.
3. lln a metallic tiling case, a blank adapted to be folded along predetermined lines to form top and side sections and provided with notches -lopposite said predetermined lines of fold and having notched corners forming marginal portions at the front and rear adapted to be bent into. front and rear flanges, the sides of said blank being provided with marginal portions adapted to be bent inwardly to form drawer sustaining slide wayswhen the ease body is `formed.
