Description

J. O. WILEY.
TRUNK HANDLE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-23. x911.
Patented ay 28,1918.
JESSE WILEY, 0F LEMONGROVE, CALIFORNIA.
TRUNK-HANDLE.
LMWQT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 23, 1917. Serial No. 187,886.
To all whom it may concern." 7
Be it known that I, Jnssn O. WILEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lemongrove, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trunk- Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in shipping and storing receptacles and more particularly relates to a trunk handle.
It is the principal aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above character wherein a grip or handle proper is designed to be mounted so as to be swung and lie in a closed or flush position in order that it will not be struck when not in use, while at the same time it may be easily and readily extended so as to be conveniently grasped when it is desired to lift a trunk, etc., to which it is attached.
More particularly this invention embraces the provision of a device of the above character wherein the construction of the grip or handle proper and the attaching plate permits of the cooperation of these parts to positively relieve any strain whatsoever from the pivot or pintle when the device is in use.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the va rious parts of the device will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention shouldbe considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the 1nvent1on. It is to be noted in this connectlon that mmor changes in the construction and arrange ment of parts may be made w1tho ut departing from the principle of operatlon of the various parts.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device in position;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section;
Fig. 4 .'s a fragmentary perspective detail of the base shown partly in section.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts. 1
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a base indicated in its entirety by the numeral 1 consisting of a body 2 rectangular in configuration while projecting from the side edges of the body adjacent the front face is an attaching plate 3 desirably of an oval configuration and formed with openings 4 through which are passed suitable fastening devices 5 designed to secure the base toa trunk or other receptacle 6 so that the body will lie countersunk. The front face of the body is provided with a recess 7 desirably of a rectangular configuration and having a fiat bottom 8. Also formed in the body at the upper edge of the recess is a journaling recess 9 having a curved bottom 10 continuing from the flat bottom 8 of the recess 7. The respective ends of the recess 9 are provided with pintle receiving openings 11 for a purpose that will presently appear. The body is further provided with a supple mental recess 12 which is arranged in com munication with the journaling recess and has a curved bottom 13 terminating in a vertical wall 14: which is positioned at right angles to the upper edge of the recess 9 and in a horizontal wall 15 which continues from the curved bottom 10 of the recess 9 and lies in a plane at right angles to the vertical wall, as indicated in the drawings.
As intimated, an improved grip or handle proper has been provided and is indicated generally by the numeral 16. In the present instance this grip is preferably constructed in the form of a rectangular loop one side of the upper portion of which is formed into a pintle receiving sleeve 17 slightly offset from the ends of the loop, as indicated, so that when the pintle 18 is passed therethrough and through the pintle openings 11 Patented May ea, 191$.
the ends of the gripping portion 19 of the loop shaped .gri will abut the flat bottom 8 of the recess when in a closed or'flush position and will lie within the plane of the v outer edge of the body, as indicated. A lug projects from the outer surface of the sleeve 17 and extends approximately throughout the length thereof and when the grip 16 is in a. position abutting the bottom of the recess 7 the lug is pos'itionedto contact with the vertical wall 14: practically simultaneously and serves to limit the downward movement of the grip, thesaid vertical wall constituting a shoulder for cooperatnig with the lugin accomplishing this purpose. When the grip is swung outwardly the lug-20 will 20* a per edgeof the recess 7, as indicated in dotcontact with the substantially horizontal wall 15 which acts as "a shoulder in limiting the movement thereof at the time the outer face or edge of the handle contacts with the upted lines in Fig. 8. By this construction and arrangement it will be apparent that practicallyjno strain whatever its-disposed on the pintlewhen the handle is'extended to facilition of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described including an attaching body formed with a main recess in its front face and a journaling recess in communication with the upper edge of the main recess, the body being further provided with a supplemental recess having a curved bottom and a vertical Wall communicating with the upper wall of the journaling recess and a horizontal wall at right angles to the vertical wall and communicating with the curved bottom of the journaling recess, a rectangular loop-shaped grip, the upper portion of which is formed into a sleeve slightly oflfset from the adjacent ends, a pintle engaged through the ends of the journaling recess and also through the sleeve portion and a lug formed integral with and projecting from the sleeve portion and engageable with the vertical wall simultaneously with the engagement of the grip with the bottom of the main recess and also engageable with the horizontal wall when the grip abuts the upper edge of thejournaling recess for limiting the movement of the grip and for relieving strain on the pintle, the loop normally lylng in the main recess and within the plane of the outer surface of the body.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
