Be it known that we, WILLLAM H. Mo- ARDLE and ROBERT B. MGARDLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Practice Apparatus for Boxers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in striking bags and dummies used by boxers for practising and developing the various blows used in boxing. O ur objects in this improvement being, first, to provide a practice dummy for boxers and pugilists by the linking of a plurality of striking bags together to represent the human head and body with means for making their movements flexible and lively; second, to provide means for allowing the bag representing the head to take up the impact of upper-cut blows in approximately the same manner as the human chin, and to return the bag again to its original position; third, to provide means for relieving the bags of the strain from the shock and vibration due to the blows of the boxer; fourth, to provide means for allowing a vertical adjustment of the bags to suit the convenience of the boxer to represent opponents of different heights, and to readily lock same in position. Fifth, to provide means for reducing the noise and vibration of the supporting bracket from the concussions of the blows on the bags.

With these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the device. Fig. 2 is a front view in cross section on the line B-B, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view looking to the left on the line A-A, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail front view of the upper bag and connections embraced between the lines C-C and D-D in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top view of the supporting bracket as far as the intersection of the line E E in Fig. l.

Similar numerals .of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several gures of the drawings.

In the drawings, 1 is a striking-bag IieXibly supported from a bracket 3 which is adapted to be secured to the wall of a room where possible. Said bag 1 is slidably mounted on a rod 10 which may be suspended from said bracket 3 by a supporting member such as a cable t and a spring 8 and the loop 10 of the rod 10, which in turn supports the straps 15 and 15 which are secured to the said bag 1. The rod 10 passes through the bag 1 and has at its lower end a threaded portion to which is secured the nut 10 and the loop 16. Suspended from the loop 16 by means of a spring 9 is a rod 11, on to which is hung a bag 2. This bag 2, together with bag 1, is held at an elastic tension by the spring 7 and a member such as the rope 6. The spring 7 is connected with the rod 11 by means of the loop 17, said loop 17 being secured to the threaded end of the rod 11 by the nuts 11 and 11. The bags 1 and 2 are given a vertical adjustment up or down to represent opponents of various heights by means of the rope 6 and the cable 4 passing through the pulleys 18 and 18, and 18 and 18 respectively, said rope 6 and cable 4 being secured to the rod 5, said rod 5 sliding through the clamp 19 which is secured to the frame 3, and adapted to be readily locked in position by said clamp by turning the screw 19.

1n order to develop the style of blow known as the upper-cut, the bag 1 representing the head of the dummy is adapted to slide upwardly when struck from underneath in a manner similar to the upward movement of an opponents chin, by reason or its being slidably mounted on the rod 10, best shown in Fig. 4t. The bag is given the proper resistance and is returned to position by the compression spring 12 acting against a plate 14: secured to the upper end of the bag 1. At the upper end of the spring 12 is another plate 13 providing a bearin for same against the loop 10 of the rod 10. A plate 10 may be secured to the lower end of the bag 1 to provide a bearing against the rod 10 to save the softer materials of the bag from wear and undue friction.

Secured to either side of the outer end of the bracket 3 are springs 2O and 21 to which in turn are attached the guys and 2l respectively. The other end of said guys may be attached to the wall of a room when available. The said guys are to brace the frame 3 against side movement and the pull of the springs beneath same, while the springs 2O and 2l are for the purpose of taking up the vibration and noise of the trame 3 which would otherwise be transmitted to the walls of the room. f

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

e. ln a device of the character described, the combination of an adjustably mounted rod, means for supporting same, means for holding same at a flexible tension, and a striking bag slidably mounted on said rod.

5. ln a device of the character described, the combination of two striking bagsiiexibly suspended one above the other, means for supporting said bags, and means for raising and lowering said bags, and means for locking same in position.
