` WATEBPTUBE noILER.
p vrApplication led May 7,1917. n Serial NO. 166,905.
To all 'whom t may concern.' y n *I Be it knownsthat I, `THOMAS L. FAwIoK, a citizen of the United States `of America, and a resident of Waterloo', Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Tube Boilers, of which the following is'a specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in water-tube boilers, and the object of myim- .4
the direction indicated by the arrow; Fig.v
2 is a cross section of said furnace taken on the broken line 2-2 of said Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, the boiler being shown in elevation taken at an angle of ninety degrees from that shown in Fig. 1; F ig. 3 is an enlarged detail section across some of the boiler-tubes of a modified form, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a part of one of the boiler-tubes, with 1 a part broken away to display the method of mounting a head of said tube therein.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Each tube l is drawn seamless steel tubing and longitudinally corrugated by a plurality of corrugations 2 which may be relatively low as shown, or given any desired altitude or angularity. These tubes are placed in parallel relation to each other, with relatively narrow interspaces, and may be positioned in any desired manner, but preferably set upright, or slightly tilted as illustrated, and may be supported in any way, without departing from the principle of my invention.
I prefer, however, to provide a relatively large number of like rectangular plates 4, having pluralities of convoluted slots to correspond with the number of water-tubes used, the tubes being tightly tted into the slots in said plates, the plates regularly Specification of Letters Patent. v

spaced apart along the tubes throughout their entire lengths. By thismeans, all the tubes are supported and securely bound'together in the necessary relations to furnish narrow winding or convoluted passages between them and between the plates kthrough which may freely pass transversely the.
heatedl gases of combustion.'
The tubes are closed ateach end by plates 3 fitted tightly thereinto and electrically welded therein, as shown in Fig. 4.
The boiler is mounted in an inclined po sition within a fire-box or furnace 6, having `a fire-brick lining 5 to conserve heat,
.said furnace having a flue 7 and may have any desired means for producing combustion beneath the boiler.
A pipe 8, located across the combustioncham er has a plurality of short tubes 9 which deliver to the lower ends of the tubes 1 at their lowest point, as shown in said causes a direct circuit through the tubes from their inletto their delivery-ports, makes tubes self-cleansing and equalizes their action in the production of steam.
The dotted line in Fig. l indicates the preferred water-level in the tubes, which may be maintained at a constant height by means of any suitable regulating appliance not shown.
The ends of the plates 4 are in contact with and are tightly secured between plates 12 mounted on the inner opposite walls of the furnace by means of bolts 13 which latter resist the outward thrust caused by high-pressure steam upon the tubes 1. The heated products of combustion pass through -in convoluted passages between the boiler sorpticn of heat to such a large extent as to render the boiler very rapid in aceelerat ing steam production, especially at the be.
ginning of the operation. This makes the boiler very suitable for use in producing steam rapidly to actuate motors of vehicles.
The tubesfl may be of any length, nurnber, or have any kind of form desired to furnish convoluted flue-passages between them. i
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a steam-boiler, a xed combustionchamber having rigid walls, a plurality of spaced flattened water-tubes Within and spaced from the Walls of said chamber, a
plurality of spaced transverse plates having orifices in which said tubes are fitted, longitudinal plates engaged between yopposite 20 ends of said plurality of plates parallel to the l'attened sides of said water-tubes and the walls of said chamber, and bolts passed Vthrough said chamber walls and securing said longitudinal ,plates upon said transverse plates, the walls and longitudinal plates acting as abutments for the transverse plates and Vinclosed dat-tened water-tubes.
