Specification of Letters Patent.

Appication filed April 6, 1917.r Serial No. 160,085.
To all 'zo/icm vz' may concern.'
Be it known that l, MAX GUSTIN, a citizen et the United States` and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and 'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovexnents in Slippers, o which the following is a spec-iiication.
This invention relates in general to boudoir or toilet slippers, and particularly to certain improvements in the sole and heel of such slippers, which adapt the latter specially to be sold in combined form to have any desired upper or vamp attached thereto by the purchaser.
The object oi' my invention is to provide means on a sole of the nature described, which shall permit of the applying of an upper thereto without causing the soft portion oi' the inner sole to he drawn toward the sides of the upper, thus giving the completed slipper a smooth and neat inside finish,
fino-ther object of my invention is to provide a Sole of the nature described which simil always keep the shape best calculated therefor for the 'use thereoic in combination with a heel to form the supporting ineinber of a slipper.
further object of my invention is to provide a sole and heel which shall easily accommodate themselves to the shape of the wearers foot and not slip forward under Vthe pressure exerted thereby.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a heel and sole, cheap t manufacturc and adapted to form a neat und corniortahie slipper when the upper is attached thereto.
The various further objects and advantages will more fully appear from the detailed description and the features of nov city iviil be particularly pointed out in the ci inns. r
lu the drawings aceonipanyii152y this specilication,
Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved sole and heel.
Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View 'taken along line' s .s of Fig. i.
Fig. 4 is a part sectional View taken along line -l-i of Fig. l.
Fig. 5 Vis an elevational View of a modified form of my invention, and
Fig. 6 is a pian View oianother modifica- Al v MOH,
.1 s 1 shape ro cel Referring in detaii to the drawing, my improved sole is made up of a. bottom layer l0 preferably of leather, a similarly shaped layer il oi paste-board or the like material superposed thereon and cemented orotherwise suitably attached thereto. A suitable binding l2 is applied, preferably by stitches, along the edges of this last layer to form a neet border l?, along which any desired upper may be attached.
The inner sole consists of a neat padded cushion i4 of similar shape to that of the outer layers l0 and il, and of size such that it covers the surface of the layer 1l only up to the inner edge of the border 123, thus leaving i'he latter exposed and free to receive the attaching' means for the upper. lt is, therefore, clear that' when the upper is attached, the inner sole is not at all disturbed, the necessary stitches being taken through the bordered edges ot the peste-board layer. Consequently, after the upper is applied, the slipper presents a neat and smooth inside finish,` no portion of the inner -sole being drawn toward the walls of the upper, while the soft cushion aords great comfort to the wearer. The upper, furthermore, cannot be torn away from the sole by the setting of the foot into the slipper, especially should the foot he of somewhat greater width than the siipper, as is the case in present constructions Where the upper is stitched directly to the soit part of the inner sole. The construction oi inner sole e described in detail. Ais will be cA 'l the `cushion is made np ieerabiy of the saine material ond to `the surface there- 4 me border. Several layers 16 oi cotton, oi or felt or the like soft paddin' mateiiel," are superposed on this iayer and lfthese are covered over and heid to the latter by a piece 17 of muslin or otl bounded satin or any other like material preferablyof the same color es the binding 12, and which is drawn 'around the bottom of the layer l5 to be there cemented or otherwise attached thereto as at 18.
To maintain the inner4 and outer soles in their propel' shape and to provide support to the Wearers foot, l provide a stiff shank 19 which is embedded in the shaped riberhoarfl 2Q, ln the form shown in the drawing, the shank member. is superposed on the inyer i5 beneath the padding of the cushion.
