To all whom it may concern: 1

Be it known that I, FRANK H. BAoHELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hemstitching Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to improvements in hemstitching attachments for sewing-machines, and one of its objects is to construct the attachment so that it can be applied to the ordinary sewing-machine presser footholder by the means used for applying other attachments thereto and without extra screws, slides, clamps or tools to attach it.

'Another object of the present invention is to construct the attachment with an ad justable gage for hemstitching at various distances from the edge of the goods, and which gage serves to hold the edges in perfect alinement during the hemstitching thereof.

A further object is to so construct the attachment that it can housed on either the vibrating 'or rotary shuttle-type of sewing machine without any change in the machine.

Another object is to provide a hemstitching attachment with means for varying the width of the hemstitching (making it narrow or Wide) by a tension device combined with the hemstitcher and applicableto the ordinary sewing machine so that the turning of a screw will regulat the width of the hemstitching.

A further object of the present invention is to provide the hemstitching attachment with a tension device independent of the tension on the sewing machine, thereby avoiding the necessity of changing the sewing' machine tension and the chance thereby of getting the sewing machine out of proper tension adjustment.

A needl opening 10 is provided in the arm 6, near the slot 7 and this eye opens into theslot 7 by a slot 11.

An adjustable gage plate 12 is carried by the rear portion of the arm 6, and this gage-plate is provided with a longitudinal slot 18. A guiding pin 14 passes through the slot 13 and into the arm 6, or rearportion 15 of the attachment, and a thumbclamping screw 16 passes through the same slot 13 in rear of the pin 14 and into'the portion 15 of the attachment by means of which the gage-plate is clamped in its desired adjustment, the plate being readily receive the projecting end of the rod 22 on which the spool of thread 23 is placed. .T his arm carries atension device 24 of the usual disk-type, and the thread 23 passes between these disks and through the slot's'26' to 'the usual threading members of the sewing'machine, so' welt understood that further reference thereto is not necessary, and down to the needle 27.
