Application led July 5, 1917. Serial No. 178,751.
y of the United States, residin at Orange, in
the county of Orange and tate of Texas, has ,invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Ring-Mandrels; and he does l hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, vreference being-had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification'.
.This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rin mandrels, for use in shaping up and roun ing and dressing bands of different diameters and consists essentially of a conical shaped member having a series of concentrics dividing the entire surface into a seriesl of cylindrical sections,
each adapted to form and shape a ring of a certain diameter. Heretofore, it has been common in the practice in constructing man- -drels for this purpose, to make the same cylindrical shaped with a continuous unbroken inclined surface formed end to end, thus making it impossible to' shape a band of cylindrical outline.
My invention comprises various details of construction combinations and arrangements of arts which will be hereinafter fully descrlbed, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accom `panying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a mandrel made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view.
Reference now being had to the details-of the drawings by letter:
A designates a mandrel of conical shape provided of solid metal and having a longitudinal tongue groove B formed therein, said mandrel is divided into a series of cylindrical outlined portions each concentric and each of a-distinct diameter, separated bythef shoulders D.
In operation, it will be noted, that `a ring or band may be placed upon the mandrel and hammered up while the metal ofthe band or ring is hot, and when the band is shaped it will have a true cylindrical form,
Vhat I claim to be new is:
As an article of manufacture, a ring Inandrel having an enlarged cylindrical base portion and adapted to extend vertically, said anvil made up of a series of superimposed cylindrical portions ofy gradually diminishing diameters with inclinedshoulders intermediate the cylindrical portions,v the portion of the anvil above the uppermost inclined shoulder being cylindrical outlined for a slight distance, and thence tapering to a point.
