increase.
resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Flexible Stay-Bolt Connections for- Boilcrs; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert'ains to makc an'd use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in flexible stay bolt connection for boilers, and is an improvement on the construction disclosed in my application Serial Number- 58,568, filed October 30,1915.
In the application above referred to, the outer or roof plate of the boiler is provided with a depression around the bolt opening, to receive the sleeve carrying the bolt head, the sleeve being welded to the roof plate.
In some situations it is desirable to have the head of the bolt well down to the plane of the roof plate, and the present invention consists in mounting the tapering sleeve in a tapering opening in the roof plate, so that the pulling stresses are borne by the direct contact of the tapering surfaces of the sleeveand plate, and securing the sleeve in place by welding at the outer margin of the plate and sleeve.
The accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a view in section of my improvement and Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views of modifications. l
1 represents a roof plate or sheet of a locomotive boiler provided with an opening 2 for each stay bolt. These openings are made tapering and of a size to snugly receive the inner tapering end of the sleeve 3, so that the latter rests on and is supported by the tapering wall of the opening in the plate. The inner end of the sleeve may project beyond the inner face of the plate, or it may stop short of the inner face, the position of the inner'end of the sleeve relative to the inner face of the plate being dependent on the length of the sleeve and the size of the bolt opening. I- prefer however to have thcsleeve inserted sul'liciently far, that, when in position, the upper edge or shoulder 4: of the conical 0r tapering part of the sleeve will be in a plane below the outer edge of the plate as clearly shown Specification of Letters Patent.

in the drawings, and I also preferjtocut away the plate at its outer edge around the opening asat 5, so as to form a depressed seat or groove for the welding composition 6. By this arrangement, the weld overlaps the shoulder 4 on the sleeve and operates tomore securely hold it against outward displacement such as it would be subjected to under collapsing movement of the boiler plates.
The tapering wall of the opening in the plate is intendedto be smooth and without threads, but my invention'eontemplates, in repair work, the application of sleeves to an opening from which a threaded sleeve has been removed without the necessity of removing the threads from the plate as in Fig. 2, or a threaded sleeve may be used in a plain unthreaded opening as in Fig. 3.
In new work however I propose to employ openings and sleeves having plain conical bearing faces so that the sleeve will be'soL- idly supported by the plate and locked in positioir by the weld, and with such construction it will be seen that the position of the bolt head in the sleeve, relative to the outer face of the plate, cartbe regulated by increasing or decreasing the size of, the opening so that the sleeve will project a greater or lesser distance in the opening in the plate.
The sleeve 3 is provided interio'rly With:
a curved seat 7 for the spherical head 8 of the bolt 9, and is provided exteriorly at its outer end with threads for the attachment of the cap 10, the inner face of the latter being curved to conform to the curvature of the head of the bolt, sufficient clearance" however being left for a limited movement of the head of the bolt in the sleeve and cap, or an equal movement of the sleeveand cap on the head. -The outer edge or periphery of the cap is made hexagonal or angular for the attachment of the wrench 'employed' in screwing and unscrewing the cap.
In assembling the parts, the sleeves, are inserted in the bolt openings in the outer plate, after which the welding composition or filler 6 is applied and the welding of the parts effected by the oxy-acetylene weldwill so fuse the metals that the union will be of a homogeneous character thereby securing all of the advantages of a sleeve integral with the plate.
ing method, or by any other method, which,
-With this improvement all the stresses on the stay bolt and sleeve orxbushing due to boiler pressure, are borne directly by the plate 1,'instead of by the welded joint, and as the contacting surfaces are conical all pulling stresses on the bolt tend to make a closer contact or union'between the sleeve and plate and prevent any leakage in the event the weld should be defective.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without 'departing fromthe spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to "the exact construction shown and described, except as required by the scope of the appended claims.-
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and, desire to secure. by Lettors-Patent, is l I 1. In stay bolt connections for boilers, the
I combination of a boiler plate having a conical, opening, and a conical sleeve mounted in said opening and supported on the conical wall of the same, the said sleeve being seplate at the edge of the opening being cut away to form a recessed seat to recelve a welding composition, the said sleeve being secured to the plate by welding the parts in the plane of the outer face of the: plate.
In testimony whereof, I have'signed this specification in the presence of twosubscrib- 40 ing witnesses.
BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD.
