I. E. BRIDGMAN. CLAMP FOR SPIRIT LEVELS. mwucmou FILED MAR.4. 1915.

TEN Wit (11' ESSE JEVEBET BBIDGIVIAN, F FREDERIGKSBUBG, TEXAS, ASSIGIN'OR 0F ONE-THIRD T0 BASSE BROS, COMPRISING HENRY W. BASSE AND HUGO BASSE, 0F FREDERICKS- rune, TEXAS.
CLAMP FOB SPIRIT-LEVELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jessa-E. BRIDGMAN,
a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Fredericksburg, in the county of Gillespie, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Spirit-Levels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clamps for spirit levels.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a clamp of the character named embodying an improved construction whereby same can be utilized with ease and facility to clamp a spirit level to a straight edge and thus obviate danger of the spirit level falling from the straight edge during use with possible resulting damage and at the same time enabling a single workman to operate the straight edge and spirit level simultaneously.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a clamp through the instrumentality of which a spirit level may be secured to a straight edge in true relation to the latter even though one edge thereof is untrue.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a clamp of the character named which will be exceedingly simple in construction and which can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a spirit level secured to a straight edge thrpugh the medium of the improved clamp, an 9 Fig. 2, a perspective view of the clamp detached.
Referring to the drawings 10 indicates Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 1, 1915.
a straight edge of the type employed in the construction of concrete walks, foundations etc., while 11 indicates a spirit level of ordinary construction.
The improved clamp is shown as comprising a pair of bars 12 and 18 connected by a bar 14L- the latter being hinged at its terminals to the bars 12 and 13 respectively. The terminals of the bar 12 have suitably mounted on the inner face thereof clamping shoes 15 and 16 respectively, while a clamping shoe 17 is mounted on the inner face of one terminal of the bar 13, said shoe 17 being disposed bpposite the shoe 15. Mounted in the end of the bar 13 remote from the shoe 17 is a clamping screw 18.
In securing the spirit level 11 two clamps are employed, although this number may be increased if desired. In use the ends of the bars 12 and 13 adjacent the shoe l6 and the screw 18 are disposed in embracing relation to the straight edge 10 and the level 11 then placed between the shoes 15 and 17, the bar 1 1 resting on the straight edge and the bottom of the level resting on said arm. The screw 18 is then operated to force same into engagement with the straight edge and this will result in the shoes 15 and 17 being forced into clamping rela tion to the level 11 to securely hold the latter to the straight edge. In the event the upper edge of the straight edge is not parallel to the lower edge thereof it will be obvious that the level can be raised at one end and secured to the straight edge in proper relation.
What is claimed is A1 clamp for securing two members together edge to edge comprising a pair of bars, a third bar having its terminals hinged respectively to the bars of said pair at points substantially intermediate the ends of the bars of the pair and adapted to be disposed between the members clamped, clamping shoes mounted on the terminals of one bar and a clamping shoe and clamping screw mounted on the terminals of the other bar respectively.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JESSE EVERET BRIDGE/TAN.
