the form of the figure 8 as indicated indotted lines, Fig. 1. The special method of connecting the cable with the lever is not detailed, as it is unimportant.
The yoke 16, is provided with a depending ear 31, equipped with a pivot pin 32. for a vertically operating lever 33, preferably of substantially U-shape, one arm 34 of the lever being adapted for engagement with the lever 25 at the pull-cord end of the same, for a purpose which is hereinafter described. The other arm of the lever 33, is weighted, preferably by enlarging it as at 35, and it is formed with a curved slot 36, which, when the weight is elevated and the valve is open or elevated, extends concentrically with respect to a point a short distance vertically below the axis of the sectional shaft. When the valveis elevated the pin 27 is at the upper end of said slot, and the inner wall of the latter is pressing outwardly against the pin because of the tendency of the weight to swing downwardly and outwardly with bolt 32 as the axis'of motion.
o By providing the weighted end of the lever with'slot 36, the portion of the lever inward of the slot, constitutes a downwardlydisposed hook terminal 37, the lower end of the same forming a shoulder or stop when thelever is depressed and the valve is closed, to constitute a lock against reverse or reopening'movement of the valve, as at such time said stop or shoulder lies in the path of upward movement of the pin 27, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
With the parts arranged as shown in full lines, Fig; 1, it will be seen that the weighted end of the lever, because of its tendency to swing downward and outward, and the tendency of thepin 27 to swing downward and inward, reliably holds the lever in the position shown, and hence with the valve elevated or open, but that when the cable 29, is
pulled upward with sufiicient force, the pin is caused to move downward in the slot, it being noted that in this movement, the pin lifts the weighted end of the lever slightly because it applies inward pressure on the hook terminal, due to the fact that the inner edge of the same occupies a plane which intersectsthat of the downward movement described by the pin. The lifting action, as will be noted by reference to Fig. 1, contmues' untilthe pin clears the terminal of the hook and the valve is almost fully closed, it being thus apparent that the valve 1s closed by the pull applied on the cable.
As the valve is about to be closed by this pull, and the pin clears the lower end of the hook terminal, the weighted lever is released and swings downward, and the lower end of the hook terminal or stop assumes a position in the path of upward movement of said pin, and at about the same time the opposite end or arm of the lever applies a relatively heavy blow upward on the lever 25. The blow applied on lever 25, is transmitted through said lever and connections to the valve so as to seat the same, if possible, more firmly or tightly than it is seated under the pull of the cable. The weighted lever through its pressure on the pull cable lever, tends to maintain the valve in its closed position, and through its hook terminal, renders it impossible for the valve to be reopened except by direct hand manipulation.
It will of course be understood that this cut-off apparatus will be arranged within a locked casing, not shown, because in common and wellknown use, and to gain access to the weight and lever, it is necessary to open the casing. To reopen the valve, the operator swings the lever 33 to about the position shown in full lines, Fig. 1, and then swings lever 25, to the position which it occupies in full lines, same figure.
If desired the slot 36, may extend concentric of the axis upon which pin 27 swings, but in this event, the upper end of the slot will be formed with an offset or pocket 36 for the reception of said pin so that downward movement of the latter effected by pulling on the cable 29, shall cause the weighted lever to rise slightly. It will thus be seen that because of the pocket, the weighted lever must be raised slightly before the valve can be seated.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a gas cut-oft apparatus embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and I wish it to be understood that while I have illustrated and described embodiment of the invention, I reserve the right to make all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A gas cut-01f apparatus comprising a valve, a lever connected to open or close the valve, and a weight pivoted to swing from a different center than that upon which the lever swings, and adapted after the lever is operated to close the valve, to automatically operate and apply a blow upon said lever tending to seat the valve more tightly and maintain it in such position.
2. A gas cut-off apparatus comprising a valve, a suitably journaled shaft, an arm rotatable with said shaft for opening or closing the valve, a lever secured on said shaft to operate the same and provided with a pin, and a weight pivoted at a point spaced from the axis of said lever and provided with a slot engaging said pin, and yieldingly holding the lever through pressure on said pin in the position the lever occupies when the valve is open; said weight when the valve is being closed by said lever, slid ing on said pin until the latter is disengaged from the slot and then swinging to a position in the path of reverse movement of said pin to lock said lever against reverse or valve opening movement.
3. A gas cut-oii apparatus comprising a valve, a suitably journaled shaft, an arm rotatable with said. shaft for opening or closing the valve, a lever secured on said shaft to operate the same and provided with a pin, and a weight pivoted at a point spaced from the axis of said lever and provided with a slot engaging said pin, and yield ingly holding said lever through pressure on said pin, in the position the lever occupies when the valve is open; said weight when the valve is being closed by said lever, sliding on saidpin until the latter is disengaged from the slot and then swinging to a position in the path of reverse movement of said pin to look said lever against reverse or valve-opening movement, and applying a blow upon said lever to seat the valve more tightly.
4. A gas cut-off apparatus comprising a valve, a lever connected for opening and closing the valve, and a pivoted weight adapted when at one point in its pivotal movement, to engage said lever and thereby hold the valve yieldingly open, and when at another point in its pivotal movement, to engage said lever and thereby lock the valve against opening movement; said weight having an arm for striking said lever after the closing movement of the latter is ended, to apply force tending to seat the valve more firmly.
