SOLDIERS BENCH.
rename.
Specification of Lett'efsiatent. Patented A191. 30', 191%.
Application filed December 13, 1917. Serial No. 206,966.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KAZIMIRZ OwIKLIusKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Island, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldiers Benches, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a bench especially adapted for soldiers use either in the barracks or at other desirable points where the soldiers may comfortably rest with their firearms p0 sitioned for immediate use when the occasion requires.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a bench adapted for army use the same being readily foldable and light in weightfor permitting the same to be carried from one point to another and providing a gun rack when the device is set up for use.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and then claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device set up for use.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the device in its folded arrangement.
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of an end p0rtion of the device. 1
Referring lnore in detail to the drawing, the device is in the nature of a combined seat or bench and gun rack especially adapt ed for use by soldiers. The bench 10 as herein illustrated is in the general form of a lawn or garden bench having a substantially rectangular back frame 11 including end posts 12, a connecting bottom brace 13 and a top or back strip 14; while a seat 15 in at 18 beneath the seat 15 and are adapted to be vertically positioned therebeneath when the seat 15 is operatively arranged horizontal while a brace or plate 19 is pivoted as at 20 between the ends 12 for engaging the adjacent sides of the legs 17 when set up for use. In the operative position of the'members, the plate 19 rests upon the blocks 32 carried by the inner faces of the ends 12 adjacent their lower ends and hooks 21 which are pivoted to the legs 12 are arranged within eyes 22 upon the outer sides of the legs 17. In this arrangement, the legs 17 are firmly held beneath the seat 15 and the entire struc ture aflords a strong support for persons seated upon the said seat 15.
When it is desired to fold the device, the hooks 21 are released and the plate 19 swung upwardly and inwardly between the ends 12 while the legs 17 are positioned against the bottom of the seat 15 and the latter swung downwardly while hasps 23 carried at each end of the seat 15 will be engaged over pivoted hooks 24- upon the outer faces of the ends 12.
A gun support or table 25 is secured at the rear of the ends 12 provided with sockets 26 for receiving the butt ends 27 of rifles 28 which are mounted upright on the shelf 25 with the barrels 29 of the guns detachably engaged with clips 30 upon a rearwardly positioned strip 31 carried by the ends 12 above the table 25.
It will be seen thatthe soldiers seated upon the seat 15 may readily grasp the guns 28 whenever the same are required for use, it being understood that the guns may be sprung inwardly and outwardly of the clips 30. A. serviceable resting seat is arranged serviceable for drill grounds and halls and which may be readily folded up and stored away when not required for use, while the same possesses great strength and is serviceable in mounting a large number of guns.
What I claim as new is In combination with a rectangular frame having opposite ends and top and bottom connecting braces at the front and rear sides of the frame respectively, a seat hinged to said ends at the forward side of the frame, inwardly folding legs hinged between the said seat, blocks arranged upon the inner sides of the ends adjacent the bottoms there of, a brace plate pivoted between said ends adjacent said rear strip adapted for positioning in parallelism with the seat in contact with said blocks and legs when the device is set up for use and detachable connections between the said ends and legs.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
KAZIMIRZ owIKLInsKI.
