'readily attached to window sashes without interfering with their movement past each other in any way, nor necessarily entail the mortising of the window sash in attaching the device thereto. My improved device is adapted to be attached substantially flush with the side bar of an upper window sash,
in any desired position; and normally allthe members thereof lie in substantially the same plane, so that the window sashes are free to slide past each other without interference. Upon adjusting the device, however, a stop is formed from the movable members which will resist any ordinary attempt to force the window sashes past each other.
Preferably, the device of my invention is stamped from sheet metal, and comprises a base plate whereon two hinged movable members, adapted to' form the stop, are pivotally mounted and normally lie in the common plane of the base plate. These movable members, however, are adapted to be moved into angular relation with said base plate, and suitably adjusted or retained in position, as by the insertion of a pin, whereby a rigid stop is formed, which will prevent the open: ing-of the window sashes beyond their venposition. v

Referring firstto Fig. 1,it will be seen slide vertically in. the usual manner. Two or more of these devices, may be applied to the upper sash, as upon the right and left hand sides thereof, should greater security be desired, or in the event that the window sashes are of unusual width, although one of said devices normally U is adequate for each pair of window sashes.
In order better to" explain the structure" involved I may now refer to the type of my improved device, which is shown in l Figs. 2 and 3, although the structural features do not materially vary in the diderent embodiments herein illustrated. The base plate 0 is, provided with two pivoted members (I, e, which are adapted normally to lie in the plane of the base plate. These members are permanently pivoted to the base -plate by means of an upper pin 7, while a removable ion lot l pin '9 normally retains the members d, e in their inoperatlve position,as shown in Fig. 2. Thelbase plate, however,- is provided with a median elevated rib or corrugation a through which the pin 9 is adapted to be inserted in order to secure the lower end of member 6 thereto, approximately in horizontal relation, While the member at, which is permanently pivoted thereto, extends at an acute angle with thebase plate as shown in Fig. 3,.by dotted lines, so that the members of my improved device assume substantially moved past the horizontal the relation of a figure 4.
In this position, it is obvious that the lower sash cannot be plane assumed by member 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. More over, the device may be aiiixed at any desired position along the window sash and is positively locked in; its extended relation by the ping, so that it may not be manipulated to open the window from without.
3 against the corru ate With the relatively heavy device of Fig. 3, the lower sash may be planed to form a shallow slot for permitting the movement of the sashes past each other, if only a slight clearance is afforded between the window sashes. IVith the lighter construction, however, the parts lie substantially in so nearly the same plane that the usual clearance is suflicient to permit my improved device to be attached at one'or both sides of the upper sash, without impeding the usual movement of the sashes past each other.

This structure also shows a slight modification, (better illustrated in Fig. 4) wherein the member 6 instead of requiring a crosspin for holding itin position, is provided with lateral extensions 6 whichare adapted to enter the laterally slotted ribs 0 provided in the base plate, in order to adjust the device in its looking or unlocking position. When the window sash is raised, of course, it will pass both sets of members provided they lie substantially in the plane of the base plate, but if one setof pivoted members is adjusted as shown in the upper portion, Fig. 5, of the drawin the lugs will react base plate to resist the slight outwar strain imparted thereto, and. the upper member at will efiectually wearer prevent the further movement of the window sash. All of these devices have the distinct advantage of being practically invisible from the exterior of the window opening, and they may not be tampered with under ordinary circumstances.
In the consideration of the foregoing, it will be perceived that my improved device is of the simplest possible construction, and therefore is neither likely to get out of order norbecome broken in use. No springs are required, and the only detachable member is a pin which may easily be replaced should it be misplaced. The prime structural feature inherent in my device is that the parts lie approximately in a common plane, so that their maximum thickness is essentially that of the corrugated or ribbed base plate 0, 0 which may be inserted or attached to one of the window sashes without obstructing the movement of the other. When the movable parts are adjusted to their locking position,
it is seen that the one stays the other, so that my device is stronger than is obtainable with members of the same size and weight, which'do not stay each other.
Having now explained the embodiment of my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following:
1. In a ventilating stop device, the combination with a centrally recessed and corrugated base plate formed of sheet metal, a second member pivoted from its upper end, adapted normally to lie within said recess andan additional member pivoted to the latter, and locking means adapted positively to secure the additional member in an intermediate corrugation of the base plate, whereby said pivoted members may be caused to form substantially a figure a with the base plate when in looking position, substantially as set forth.
2. In a window stop device, the combination with a centrally recessed base plate transversely ribbed along its rear face, of a 106 member'pivoted from its upper end in an upper rib of the base plate, an additional member pivoted to the first named member and adapted to lie flush with it in the recess of the base plate, and a locking part adapted 110 to be inserted in a lower rib of the base plate and temporarily and positively lock the members in extended position, substantially as set forth.
