Steam engine cylinders 4.6 are suspended from the front portion of the side members 28 of the supplemental frame structure and each cylinder is connected by a steam pipe 17 with the steam chamber 10, and by an exhaust pipe 18 with the chamber 18. Preferredtypes of throttle valves and reversing gear for the engine cylinders e6 (not shown) are. provided and are operable by the engineer in the cab 18, as usual, 7
The'engine shaft 49 is journaled in the main frame 20 rearwardly of the cylinders 16 and is provided with wheels carrying crank pins 50*, which are connected by connecting rods 51 with the piston rods 52. The outer ends of the shaft as at points adjacent the wheels carrying the crank pin 50 are provided with non-rotatable gear wheels 50, which mesh with relatively small pinions 51 slidably and rotatably mounted upon a shaft 52, which latter is rotatably supported in a horizontal position in bearings 53, provided upon the frame 28-29. The shaft 52 is "provided with non-rotatable gear wheels 5 1, which are in permanent mesh with a train of gears 55, having connection with the pinion 56 secured upon the rear drive shaft 25, wherebythe rotary movement of the shaft 52 is'transmitted to the rear drive wheels 27.
The several gear wheels 50, 5d, 55 and 56 are so arranged and proportioned as to rotate the rear drive axle 25 at a considerably greater' speed than that of the engine shaft 49, and for this reason these wheels will be hereinafter referred to as the high speed gear.
The gear wheels or pinions 51 are rotatably and non-slidably mounted in rectangular frames 58, which latter are slidablv mounted upon the shaft 52 and in guides 59 secured to the supplemental frame 2829. As the frames 58 are moved inwardly upon the shaft 52, the pinions 51 are moved in- 'wardly and are engaged with pins 60 se cured diametrically through the end portions ofthe'shaft 62, and said pins are adapted to be received in diametrical slots formed in the adjacent side faces of the pinions, whereby a non-rotatable connection between said pinions and the shaft is established so as to provide a driving connection between the relatively large gear wheels 50 and the shaft 52.
The inner members of the rectangular frames 58 are provided with imvardly di rected extensions 61, which are pivotally connected with one end of a pair of hell cranks 62, pivotally secured at 63 upon the platform 30 and having pivotal connection at their opposite ends with a rod 6-1 actuated by a piston 65, reciprocably mounted in a cylinder 66. The piston 65 is preferably actuated by air, which is adn'iittcd to the cylinder 66 through a valve (not shown) controlled by the engineer of the locomotive, whereby the gear wheels 51 may be moved into and out of engagement with the pins 60, as desired.
Relatively small gear wheels 68 are nonrotatably secured upon the engine shaft -19 inwardly of the gear wheels 50 and mesh with an intermediate gear wheel 69, which latter meshes with a gear wheel 70 of approximately the same diameter as the gear wheel 60, which is secured upon the roar drive shaft 25. The gear wheels 68, 6E) and '70 are so arranged and proportioned as to drive the shaft 25 at approximately the same rate of speed as the engine shaft l5) and consequently these wheel; will be hereinafter referred to as the slow speed gear. The gear wheels 7 O are rotatahlv mounted; upon the rear axle and are also non-slid ably and rotatably mounted in frames '71, which latter are slidably supported in the frame structure 20. The inner surfaces of the gear wheels 70 are provided with dia" metrical slots 72, adapted, when the gear wheels are moved inwardly by the frat s 71. to receive pins 73 secured diametrically through the axle 25, whereby the gear wheels are non-rotatably connected there with. The frames 71 are actuated by a red '74: and bell cranks 7 5. which are identical in construction to and operated by the same means as the corresponding parts 6-1- and 62, which actuate the frames 58.
The front drive axle 2a is non-slidabl v and rotatably mounted in a box 76 suppo ted in the front portion of the main frame 30. and the opposite ends thereof are bifui-cateil and pivotally receive knuckle rods 7' having angularly directed ends 78 pivotallv secured in bifurcated lateral extensions 79 carried by the front drive wheels The angular terminals 78 of the knuckle rods are pivotally secured at 80 between the hi furcations of the extensions 7 9 and the pivotal connections between the knuckle rod 77 and the front axle 2i and between the knuckle rod 77 and the bifurcated extensions 7 9 are disposed at right angles to each other.
so as to permit the front drive wheels to move into various angular positions with relation to the shaft 24. l
The inner portions of the front drive wheels 26 are provided with circumferential. flanges 81, received in hooleshaped retainers 82 carried by vertically disposed frames 83.
The frames 83 and front drive wheels '26 are movableindependently of the main and supplemental frames 20 and 28 and the upper and lower horizontal members of the frames 83 are maintained in parallel rela received within a vertical slot 90 formed in a horizontally movable cross head 91, carrying plungers 92 which are received Within cylinders or tubular members 93 carried by the frame 83. The movement of the coupling member 89 is guided by the cross head 91, plungers 92 and cylinders 93, in order that the front connecting rod sections 83 will be maintained in properly spaced relation to the front drive wheels 26 regardless of the position of the latter with relation to the main frame 20 of the locomotive.
lhe rear terminals of the coupling members 8 and 9 are pivotally and slidably connected with the slotted forward terminals of the rear connecting rod sections 95 by wrist pins 96, which are adapted to move in the slotted terminals of the connecting rod sections 95 to accommodate the move ment of the wheels 26 with relation to the wheels 27 when the locomotive is turning a sharp curve in the track.
The front portion of the rear connecting rod section '95 is connected with the cross head 97, which is slidably supported in guides 98, and the rear terminal of the connecting rod sections '95 are connected with the crank pins 99 of the rear drive wheels 27. A brake cylinder 100 is supported upon the platform 30 and the piston actuated rod 101 thereof is connected with a brake actuating rod 102, which latter extends transversely across the platform 30 and is connected at its opposite terminals with the longitudinally extending rods 103. The rear terminals of the rods 103 are pivotally connect-ed at 1041 to a brake rod106, which latter pivotally secured at 10'? to the frame 1 2829. A brake shoe 108 is pivotally secured at 109 to the rod 106 and during the forward movement of the'latter is applied to the rear drive wheel 27. Front brake shoes 110 are pivotally secured to the frame 28L 29, and are pivotally secured at 111 to a horizontally disposed rod 112, having connection with the lower terminal of the rod 106, whereby the shoe 110 is applied to the wheel 27 simultaneously with the shoe 108.
The brake cylinder 100 is supplied with compressed air from a cylinder 113 supported upon the platform 30 and is con 1 trolled in its operation by the usual. engineers valve (not shown). Air is supplied to the tank 113 by a compressor (not shown) and the air is also utilized to operate an air motor 114, the piston 115 of which is connected with an electric generator 116 adapted to supply. an electrical current for the operation of electrically operated signals and any other electrical devices pertaining to train service.
Rail-engaging rollers 11? are rotatably supported on hinged supporting rods 118 depending from the frame 28 29 and are adapted to engage the web of the rails underneath the head to maintain the driv- 1. In a locomotive, a truck, drive wheels supporting said truck, driving engines supported-by the truck, a changeable speed gear connectlng the engine with the drive wheels. and fluid operated means control ling the changeable speed gear.

In a locomotive, a truck, drive, wheels supporting the truck, driving engines supported by the truck, a slow speed gear connet-ting the engine with the wheels, said slow speed gear including a clutch for dis-. connecting the drive wheels from the en gine, fluid operated means for actuating the clutch, a high speed gear connecting the engine with. the drive wheels and including a. clutch, and fluid operated means independent of the first fluid operated. means for controlling the secondmentioned clutch.

In a locomotive, a truck, front and rear axlessupported in the truck, rear drive wheels secured to the rear axle, front drive wheels, and means loosely connecting the IflOntCllflVG wheels with the front axle to permit the front drive wheels to move into various angular positions withrelationto the rear drive wheels.

In a locon'lotive, a flexible truck structure, drive wheels supported in the front and rear portions of the truck structure, drive wheels connected with the rear axle, front drive wheels, and means loosely con necting the front drive wheels with the front axleto permit the front drive wheels to move into various angular positions with relation .to the rear drive wheels.
'5. In a locomotive, a truck, frontand rear axles supported in the truck, drive wheels carried by the front and rear axles, said front wheels being movable with relation to the rear wheels, and flexible driving connections between the front and rear drive Wheels.
6. In a locomotive, a truck, axles supported in the front and rear portions of the truck, front drive wheels pivotally connected with the terminals of the front axle, rear drive wheels rigidly secured to the rear axle, means for maintaining the front wheels in parallel relation to each other, and flexible driving connections between the front and rear wheels.
7 In a locomotive, front and rear trucks, wheels supporting said trucks, a boiler, means pivotally supporting the boiler upon the front truck, a hollow casing pivotally supporting the rear portion of the boiler on the other truck, apartition arranged in the casing dividing the interior of the latter into live and exhaust steam chambers, an engine connected with the wheels, a steam pipe connecting the live steam chamber of the casing with the engine, means connecting the live steam chamber of the casing with the boiler, and exhaust pipes connecting the exhaust steam chambers of the casing with the engine and with the smoke box of the boiler.

In a locomotive, front and rear trucks, wheels supporting said trucks, a boiler, means pivotally supporting the front end of the boiler on one of the trucks, a twopart casing carried partly by the rear portion of the boiler and partly by the rear truck and pivotally supporting the rear portion of the boiler, said casing being of hollow formation, partitions arranged in the casing dividing the interior of the latter into annular live and exhaust steam chambers, pipes connecting the live and exhaust steam chambers of the casing with the boiler, an engine connected with the wheels, and pipe connections between the live and exhaust steam chambers and the engine.
9. In a locomotive, a truck, rear drive wheels therefor, front drive wheels, means movahly connecting the truck with the front wheels and permitting swinging movement of the latter on vertical axes, pivotally connected rod sections connecting the front and rear drive wheels, and means for guiding the movement of the front rod sections to maintain the latter in predetermined relation to the movable front wheels.
10. In a locomotive, a truck. front drive wheels therefor, rear drive wheels, means inovably connecting the truck with the front wheels and permitting swinging movement of the latter on vertical axes, pivotally connected rod sections connecting the front and rear wheels, means for guiding the rear rod sections, and means for guiding the movement of the front rod sections to maintain the latter in predetermined relation to the movable front wheels.
11. In a locomotive, a truck, rear drive wheels therefor, front drive wheels, means pivotally connecting the truck with the front drive wheels and permitting swinging movement of the latter on vertical axes, pivotally connected rod sections connecting the front and rear wheels, truck-carried means for guiding the movement of the rear rod sections, and means for maintaining the front rod sections in predetermined relation to the movable front wheels,
12. In locomotive. a truck, an axle supported therein, frames pivotally connected with the ends of the axle, and wheels rotatably mounted in said frames.
13. In a locomotive, a. track, an axle supported therein, frames pivotally connected with the ends of the axle, flanged wheels, and retainers carried by the frames and engaging the flanges of the wheels to rotatably support the latter.
14-. In a locomotive, a truck, an axle supported therein, frames pivotally connected with the ends of the axle, wheels, flanges carried by said wheels, and substantially hook shaped retainers carried by said frames and engaging said flanges to rotatably support the wheels.
15. In a locomotive, a truck, an axle supported therein, rear wheels supporting said truck, frames pivotally connected with the ends of said axle, wheels rotatably supported in said frames, pivotally connected rod sections connecting the first and secondmentioned wheels, and means reciprocably mounted in said frames and connected with the front rod sections for guiding the move ment of the latter.
