Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented apt. ea, iota.
Application filed December 3, 1917. Serial No. 205,015.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I IRWIN O. BAUER, a citizen of the United gtates, and residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Upholstery-Bindings, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
My invention relates to a binding or gimp primarily as avehicle upholstery trimming.
An object of the invention is to provide a vehicle upholstery binding with a flap for concealing and protecting the fastener heads used in applying the binding.
Another object of the invention is to provide a binding of plural ply having raised or beaded edges with a hinged tack covering flap, between the edges.
Another object of the invention is to form a binding from a single tape of material folded into plural ply, with the laps of the fold secured together by a longitudinal line htl of stitches, leaving an edge of an outermost double ply lap free.
Other features of the invention will be more fully described in a description of the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of the improved upholstery binding, showing a. portion of the fastener covering flap thereof folded back or turned up at one end.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the bind ing taken on a line 22, Fig. 1, and as applied as anupholstery trimming.
The binding, as an article of commerce, comprises a body portion 1 having beaded or raised opposite edges 22 longitudinally, and a cover flap 3 normally lapping over thebody portion intermediate of the beaded edges. The cover flap is adapted to be hingedly turned or folded upward exposing the body portion beneath, when applying the binding, so that the tacks, or fasteners may be driven through the body portion leaving the cover flap free, for concealing and covering the heads of the fasteners. The fas tener heads are thus protected from the weather, which isof advantage when the binding is used for vehicle upholstery.
Common flat-head steel tacks may be used in securing the binding. The heads of the tacks or fasteners are concealed by the cover 'flap and therefore do not detract from the appearance of the binding, so that a higher quality of finish can be produced. The headed edges of a binding form a channel within which the cover flap snugly lies and is folded upon itself and over a cord 4 at.
the line of fold to provide a lap 5. This lap5 is cemented tothe intermediate or base vportion 6, which it overlies, temporarily holding the lap fiat upon the base portion.
The opposite margin of the tape has its material folded upon itself, making a two ply thickness, with the lap 7 of the fold cemented to the tape portion which the" lap overlies, and adapted to form the cover flap 3 of the finished product. This double ply portion as a lap is folded upon the base portion 6 and lap 5, and over a cord 8 at the line of fold. The cords 4 and 8 forming raised and rounded beaded edges of the binding, serving as an edge reinforcement giving body and stiffness to the strip, provide a pocket for the cover flap, and ornamentation to the finished product. After the parts have been folded they are permanently secured by a line of stitches 9, adjacent the cord 8 and rear edge of the flap 3, through all of the layers and la s of the folded tape, leaving the forward e ge of the flap free to be turned up for tacking and binding.
Having described my invention, claim: 1. An upholstery binding comprising a strip folded into plural ply, having beaded edges longitudinally, a double ply flap as a layer of the strip intermediate of said edges, and stitches securing said plies along an inner line of one of the beaded edges leaving the flap free to be swung upwardly along the line of stitching.-
2. An upholstery binding comprising a strip folded into plural ply having cords longitudinally within the edge folds to provide beaded edges, a flap as a ply of the strip intermediate of said edges and stitches securing said plies along an inner line of one of the beaded edges leaving the flap free to be swung upwardly along the line of stitching.
3. An upholstery binding comprising a roe 'ttt
tape of material folded longitudinally into plural ply strips forming a body portion and opposite laps over said body portion, one lap overlying the other, and the parts secured together by a longitudinal row of stitches along a margin of the strip leaving the edge of the upward lap free to'provide a hinged cover flap.
4:. An upholstery binding comprising a tape of material folded longitudinally into a plural ply strip forming" a body portion and opposite laps over said body portion, one lap of double ply overlying the other, said parts secured together by a longitudinal row of stitches along a margin of the strip leaving the edge of the uppermost lap free a to provide a hinged cover flap, and cords Within the edge folds formed by said lap.
5. An upholstery binding strip formed of a single tape of material folded upon itself into plural ply, comprising a central portion of the strip Width folds from each side of the central portion as layers overlying each other and said central portion, the uppermost layer folded upon itself to provide a double ply flap, and a line of stitches securing all of the layers to said central portion along a margin thereof and adapting said flap to he swung upwardly from said line of stitches.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name, as attested by the two subscribing Witnesses.
