BAR SUPPORT AND SPACER FOR CONCRETE REINFORCEMENTS.
prising separately formed bar clamping members and spacing means connected together and adapted for use in concrete reinforcements so as to permit the quick and' convenient arrangement of reinforcing bars preparatory to having concrete poured therearound.
An illustrative-embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a bar supporting and spacing device constructed according to this invention.
' Fig.. 2 is a perspective view of one of the bar clamping and supporting membersshown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view, partly in section, showing the preferred form of the improved means for securing the bar clamping members to the spacing and supporting strip.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the form shown in Fig. 1, with lthe clamping means bent over a bar.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view showing a slightly modified arrangement of the improved means for securing the bar clamping members to the spacing strip,
1n placing reinforcing bars for concrete construction, it is desirable to have supports which insure quick arrangement .of the bars, uniformly spaced apart transversely of the length of the bars. 'lihisV is conveniently accomplished by providing a plurality of bar clamping members combined with suitable spacing strips whereby said clamping members are spaced apart in series or groups. Various forms of. clamping members and. spacing means are shown in my copending applications Serial No. 108,913, filed July 12, 1916, Serial No. 202,439, filed November 17, 1917, and Serial No. 207,114, filed December 14, 1917.
lilhe present invention contemplates the production of a combined bar supporting Specification of Letters Patent.

and spacing device which is simplerin construction and less expensive to manufacture than any of the forms heretofore proposed or used.
The modifications herein shown embody the same general construction, comprising a spacing strip or means 1 and bar clamping members or means 2, said spacing and clamping means being separately formed and afterward assembled and secured together by lugs formed on one of said means and bent over the other.
- Fach of the clamping members 2 as lierein illustrated is formed from sheet metal so as to provide a seat 4, depending legs 5, and' upwardly disposed fingers 6. The depending legs 5 and seat 4 constitute a substantially inverted lil-shaped chair, and the fingers 6 are preferably located at diagonally opposite sides thereof.
he spacing strip l is in the form of a comparatively narrow strip of wrought metal straight from end to end, of uniform cross section and of a Width not greater than the distance between the upwardly disposed ingers 6 of the clamping members 2. rlhe spacing and bar clamping means are secured together by lugs formed on one of said means and bent so as to have interlocking engagement with the other.
1n the preferred form of construction shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the lugs 3 are formed on the strip 1. and are struck down therefrom and bent around opposite edges of the seat 4 of the clamping members 2. rihe lugs 3 are formed in pairs at certain specified intervals along the length of the strip, the spacing of which is determined by the place where the device is to be used. A plurality of the clamping members are thus arranged in predetermined spaced relation along the strip, and said clamping members may be set on the falsework in the desired arrangement, with very little trouble and labor, and at the same time positively insure the proper spacing of the bars.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, lugs 7 are struck up from the seat 4 of the clamping members 2 and extended through apertures formed in the spacing strip 1 at regular intervals along the length thereof. The lugs are bent down over the spacing strip for locking the clamping members thereto.
Apertures 9 are formed at points along the spacing strip 1 so that a series of the supports, if desired, may be held in position `011 the falsework by suitable fastening means.
The reinforcing bars 10 are placed bctween the fingers 6 as shown in Fig. 4, so as to rest uponthel strip 1 directly above the seats '4. The fingers are then bent over the bars so that they are firmly gripped to the supportin device.v Q
It will e understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be alteredor omitted Without departing from the spirity of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim: Y
1. As an article of manufacture, a spacing and supporting device for bar reinforcements for concrete, comprising separately formed spacing means and clamping means, and lugs separate from the parts which clamp the bar, formed on one of said means bent so as to have interlocking engagement with the other for securing said clamping means at intervals along said spacing means.
2. As an article of manufacture, a spacing Vand supporting device for bar reinforcements for concrete, comprising a spacing strip, separately formed bar clamping means, and lugs formed on said strip and bent so as to have'interlocking engagement mesme with said clamping means for supporting said clamping means on said strip.
3. As an article of manufacture, a spacing and su porting device for bar reinforcements or concrete, comprising separately formed bar clamping means each having a pair of depending legs connected by a transverse part with upstanding fingers at opposite si es thereof, a spacing and Vsupportlng strip of a Width not greater than the distance between said upstanding fingers, and lugs formed on said strip and bent around said transverse art of said clamping means for securing said clamping means at intervals along said strip.
4. As an article of manufacture, a spacing and supporting device for bar reinforcements or concrete, comprising separately formed bar clamping means each having a pair of depending legs connected by a transverse part with upstanding fingers at opposite sides thereof, a spacing and supporting strip, and lugs formed on said stri and bent around said transverse part o said clamping means for securing said clamping means at intervals along said strip.
Signed at Chicago this 2nd day of February, 1918.
