SELF EMPTYING BUCKET.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 21. 1917.

III/1114111113 in opened position for emptying the con- LAWRENCE MURPHY, or WILLIAMS, IOWA.
STELF-IEMPTYING BUCKET.
racaaai.
Application filed June 21, 1917. Serial No. 176,178.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE MURPHY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at.
W illiams, in the county of Hamilton, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Emptying Buckets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable, others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in buckets, and particularly to self emptying buckets.
One object of the present invention is to provide a bucket which can be quickly and easily emptied by setting the bucket over the opening wherein the contents are to be disposed. 7
Another object is to provide anovel means for operating a downwardly swinging bottom, whereby the entire contents of the.
bucket can be emptied in a short time.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a bucket equipped with my improved emptying means.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the bucket.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. l is a, vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 3 but with the bottom of the bucket tents.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-50f Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 6--6 of Fig. 3.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents the side walls of a metal bucket. The bottom 11 is formed with a large opening 12 therein, the portion 13 of'the bottom surrounding the opening being formed with a pressed rib 14 which results in a groove 15 on the lower side of this portion. Disposed below the opening,
and formed near its peripheral edge with a corresponding rib and groove .16 and 17 re spectively, is the movable bottom or valve member 18, said bottom or valve member being hinged to the portion 13 at 19 for downward swinging movement. It will be noted copies of this patent may be obtained for bucket.
five cents each, by addressing the waehzlngtomhitl."
that when the valve is disposed in closed position, the rib thereof fits snugly in the groove 15 of the ledge 13, thereby forming a water-tight joint. The said ledge portion andthe side walls of the bucket extend downwardly to form the flange 20 on which the bucket rests and by means of which the bucket is slightly elevated from the ground or floor. Through this flange there is formed an opening 21 and through the opening is disposed a pivoted arm 22 the inner end of which is disposed between the outer edge of the valve member and the portion 13. The other end projects outwardly beyond the wall of the bucket and has secured thereto one end of a cord or wire 23, said wire or cord extending upwardly on the outer face of the bucket wall where it is connected to one arm of an angle lever 24 which is pivotally mounted on the handle 25 of the Thus when the other arm of the lever 24 is pressed toward the handle the wire will be pulled so as to rock the arm 22 and cause the separation of the bottom valve member from the ledge 13, and the disengagement of the rib from the groove. Thus when the angle lever is moved the bottom will be released and swing downwardly whereupon the contents of the bucket will be permitted to quickly empty from the bucket.
Connected to the edge of the bottom valve member, adjacent the arm 22, is a second core or wire 26 which also extends upwardly within convenient reach whereby the said member can be quickly pulled into closed position.
What is claimed is:
A self-emptying bucket includinga bucket wall and bottom therefor, said bottom being formed with anopening therethrough, the portion of the bottom surrounding the opening being formed with a rib and groove, a movably connected bottom member mounted below the opening and having a rib for engagement in the first named groove, and means disposed between the bottom and the edge of the bottom member for prying the bottom member from engagement with the bottom of the bucket. In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
