Description

J. c. COSTELLO.
0005 HOLDER. APFUCATION FILED MAY 19.1917.
1,263,380. Patented Apr. 23, 1918.
51mm '14 fol JAMES C. COSTELLO, OF CORTLAND, NEW YORK.
DOOR-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 1918.
Application filed May 19, 1917. Serial No. 169,743.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns C. Cos'rELLo, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cortland, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in holding devices, and more particularly to door holders, that are adapted to be secured to the floor adjacent a swinging door, so as to securely hold the dcoropen upon engagement with the holder. The holder includes a spring latch disposed in the path of movement of the door, and compressed by the same upon engagement, to securely hold the bottom edge thereof, and hold the door fixed at any desired predetermined position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved door holder, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the body portion of the same; it being noted that the spring metal strip is removed.
Having more particular reference. to the drawings in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, I will refer in detail to the improved door holder which comprises a body portion .9 having one end thereof bent upwardly and back upon itself as shown at 10, the body adjacent said end being provided with transversely extending spaced slots 11 therein. The opposite end of the body 9 is slit inwardly transversely from its opposite sides, and the portions between said slits and the end of the body are bent inwardly transversely toward each other, in spaced relation as shown at 12, said bent ends being spaced from the body to form a guide portion for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described. The guide portion and the opposite end of said body are provided with openings therethrough designated by the numeral 13. v
The holder member employed in this form of the device comprises a spring metal strip 13 having the intermediate portions thereof bowed to provide door engaging means, and said strip has one end 14 thereof positioned through the guide portion 12 in one end of the body, and having its extremity disposed in the bent end 10 of said body. This end is additionally held in position by a securing member 15 that is positioned through this end of the strip and the body and is secured in the floor. An additional securing member 16 is positioned through the guide portion 12 at the opposite end of the device to securely hold the body in position. The opposite end of the spring that is slidably mounted between the bent portions of the guide 12, will slide freely therein for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described.
This type of door holder is positioned in the path of movement of the swinging door, and upon engagement of the door with the latch, said spring will be compressed, this being permitted by the sliding movement of the free or loosely connected end of said spring in the guide portion 12. The spring will. be under constant tension, and hence tends to hold the door securely in position when in operative engagement therewith.
Immediately upon the door being removed from over the holder, said spring will return to normal position, the extremity positioned in the guide member sliding along the same to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, which is normal inoperative position of the device.
These door holders form very simple and economically constructed securing means, that are adapted to hold a swinging door in any predetermined position. The devices may be easily and simply applied, and owing to their extreme simplicity of construction may be economically manufactured. The devices are not only applicable to doors, but may be employed to hold gates or the like in different positions.
'From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the 1 now consider to be the best embodiment Cir thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A door holder of the class described ineluding a body, a holder formed of a single strip of bowed spring metal, said body having a pair of transverse parallel slots therein through which one end of said strip is adapted to be positioned, a stop on said body for said end of the strip, and a guide way formed on the body at its opposite end Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
adapted to slidably receive the adjacent end of the strip.
2. A door holder of the class describedineluding a body formed of a flat strip, a holder formed of a single strip of bowed spring metal, said body having a pair of transverse parallel slots therein through which one endof said holder strip is adapted to be positioned, a lip on the body against which said end of the strip is disposed, and the opposite end of the body being slit transversely from its opposite sides with the pertions between said slits and the end being bent inwardly in parallel spaced relation with the body to form a guide passage in l which the adjacent end of the holder strip is slidably positioned.
In testimony whereof, I ai'liX my signature hereto.
JAMES C. COSTELLO.
