To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JIMMIE T. IKEDA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a speci-. fication.
This invention relates generally to locks, and particularly to permutation locks.
The invention aims primarily to provide a lock of the sliding bolt type, wherein improved combination means is employed for locking or releasing the bolt for sliding movement. A further object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character which has its bolt holding parts so arranged as to minimize the opportunity for the unauthorized manipulation of the same, and yet which may be easily actuated by one knowing the proper combination to release the lock bolt. 7
Still further objects residein providing a lock of the type set forth which is of simple and inexpensive construction, which is composed of but few readily assembled parts, all of which are so assembled as to minimize the opportunity for wear, breakage, or derangement, which is easy of operation, and which will prove thoroughly eflicient in the attainment of the ends for which it is designed.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds,the invention resides inthe novel formation, combination, and arrangement of Jarts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out the invention, I employ a" casing 5 of conventional form, and which is adapted to be secured within a door in any approved manner. This casing is closed at one end by a cover plate 6.

which is adapted when moved to its limit in one direction to be projected at one extrem length to the width of the bolt 7.

This bolt is provided upon its inner surface with a plurality of shoulders 8, the latter being formed by providing the bolt with transversely extending grooves or channels. The shoulders in the present instance are arranged in separate and distinct sets, there being four of such shoulders in each set.

Mounted for rotation upon the stem'9 is a plurality of nested independently movable sleeves 13, 14, 15, and 16,- the first three of which are provided adjacent their inner ends with disks 17, from the outer edges of which extend the rings or flanges 18. It will be observed that these disks move concentri cally with the pin or stem 9, but vary in diameter. so as to enable the same to be easily rotated.
v The outer extremity of the sleeve 16 is The outer extremities of the nested sleeves provided with a disk, from the edges of which project a flange 25, the latter in its end with an elongated slot 30, through which the nested sleeves project. The lock bolt is also provided with a longitudinally disposed rack 31, which is adapted to be engaged by the teeth of a rack pinion 32 carried by the outermost of the nested sleeves 16. It is therefore obvious that when unrestricted, the lock bolt may be slid inwardly or outwardly of the casing by rotating the sleeve 16.
It will be observed that each annulus is provided with a series of numbers, and the notches 19 in their respective rings or flanges are adapted to be positioned in register with the shoulders 8 of the lock bolt when the said numbers are in certain positions. lVhen all of the rings have been so moved that their cut out portions are alined with the locking bolt, the latter is free to slide, and sliding of the bolt is governed by the rotary movement of the sleeve 16 de livered through its flange 25. When, however, any of the flange portions carried by the various disks are engaged either partly or wholly behind any-- of the shoulders 8, sliding movement of the bolt 7 will be prevented. It is thus seen that accurate adjustment of each annulus 22 must be made before the locking bolt will be released for sliding movement. The grooves forming the shoulders 8 are arranged inseparate sets, one of the sets of shoulders being adapted to maintain the bolt in extended or locked position, while the other set of shoulders is to be engaged by the various rings or flanges to hold the bolt in retracted position. It isapparent, also, from this construction, that proper manipulation of the stem 9' is neces sary before the bolt will be released to the action of the sleeve 16.
While the present disclosure is that of what is believed to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that'various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and pro portion of parts, without departing from the spirit'of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is zl- 1; In a combination lock, a pair of nested independently rotatable sleeves, a disk on one of said sleeves, a notched flange on said disk, a lock bolt having a groove for the accommodation of said flange, the saidgroove and notch being of equal length, the said lock bolt having a slot through which said sleeves extend, andfmeans governed by the'rotary movement of the other ofsaid sleeves for sliding said bolt.
2. In a combination lock, a pair of nested independently rotatable sleeves, a notched ring carried by one of said sleeves, a lock bolt having a groove for the reception of saidring, the said bolt having an opening to receive said sleeve,'a pinion on the other of said sleeves, and a rack on said bolt in mesh with said pinion.

In a combination look, a plurality of nested independently rotatable sleeves in said casing, the outer ends of said sleeves be ing extended beyond said casing, a notched ring secured to the inner end of each sleeve, a lock bolt having a plurality of grooves to receive said rings, a rack on said bolt, a pinion on one of said sleeves-in mesh with said rack, and grip members on the outer ends of said sleeves.
