Be it known that we, VViLLIAM T. MacnoNALn, a subject ol the King' ot' Great Britain, and Bnn'roN iV. SCOTT, a Citizen ot' the United States, both residents ol San .l ose, in the county of Santa Clara and Stato 0i" California` have invented a new and limproved Attachment for lype-l/Vriters and other Machines, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention is applicable to key-operated machines generally, such as typewriters, type-setting machines and the like, in which a Carriage is caused to travel and then return to the initial point.
More particularly, the invention relates to n'ieans ior automatically returning the carriage by a spring motor in which power is stored by the operation of the keys and incidental to the normal functions of the keys in performing the operations o1 printing, spacing or the like.
rllhe invention is characteiized b v novel operations to effect automatically line spacing of the machine preliminary to the automatic return of the carriage under the power of the springl motor.
The invention is characterized also by a drum from which a cord or equivalent ilexible element runs over suitable guides and connects with the carriage so as to be paid out from the drinn as the carriage advances and to be wound up to return the carriage, the drum beine; freed from the action ot the spring motor for the paying out ot the cord and subjected to the action of the motor tor the winding up of the cord, and the connection of the cord with the carriage is through the medium oit a line spacing lever to cause the operation of the latter as a }`)reliminary to the return of the carriage.
The invention is further distinguished by novel means 'for controlling' and releasing the power shaft of the motor so that it will be held stationary during' a forward movement of the carriage and released to effect the return of the carriage.
Characteristic features of the invention also reside in novel trip mechanism comprising elements direct-ly associated with the spring motor, its shaft, etc., and coactmg trip elements associated with the carriage to travel there 'ith sothat the tripping will be automatically and unfailingly brought about at the proper time considering' the tra vcl ot' the carriage. .The invention is furthermore distinguished by various novel features of the trip mechanism as will clearly appear the description proceeds.

We have conventionally shown in the present example certain parts ot a typewriter, including' keys l0 (Fig. which may in this instance be Considered as printing keys and a spaciingy key, which will operate through ditt'erent instrumentalities in ditt'erent machines to perform various work. As here shown cach key has a lever l1 suitably fulcrumed as at 12, and a vertically rockable lever 13 is shown, and in practice, arranged in any suitable way to be given moven'ient by the operation of any of the keys. The machine may be of the type in which a longitudinal bar 15 is acted upon by the several key levers l1 to insure the operation ot' the lever 13. rllhe connection between the cord 3:2 and the carriage 16 is through the medium o'i a spacing lever 34, best shown in Fig. 8, which is roekably mounted lntegral with the spacing lever 3l, or other- Wise made to rock therewith, is au arm S6 which is adapted to press against tue line spacing bar 18 oi the typewriter, said bar being 1n the present instance under the 1nuenee et' a retractile spring 37 of known torni.

The swinging of the bellcrank 50 will have given a turning movement to the pin l5) and thereby carried the arm t8 and segment i6 through an agle to engage the pin 45 on the shaft 43. thereby giving an axial movement to the said shaft 43 whereby the post t2 carrying the pawls l0 will be moved to a position to carry the pawls l() out of engag-ement with the fixed annular rack 38 and into engagement with the ratchet wheel il of the drum 31. The release of the pa wls l0 from the rack 38 permits the shaft 2G to be turned by the re-action of the motor spring 28 and the drum 31 will thus be turned to wind up the cord 32 and automatically return the carriage 16. Since however, the connection of the cord 32 with the carriage is through the medium of the spacing lever 34, the initial pull of thev spring on the cord 32 will rock the spacing lever 34 to cause the element 3G to move the spacing bar 1'8, thus effecting the line spacing;l automatically with the automatic return to the carriage. To restore the parts for thc release of the, drum 3l and the locking of the shaft 26, the rock bar 57 has a second trip Tl which upon thc return of the carriage will. engage the upright member 56 of the bellcrank 50 and restore said bellcrank to the left hand position indicated in Fig. f2. it will be observed from Fig. Jr that the upper end of the member 56 is beveled as at and there is a corresponding beveled surface 73 on the bar 57 to permit the return of the member 5G past the said bar. The movement of the bcllcrank lever 50 to the original position will have carried the segment sl-6 in a direction to restore the shaft 43 and post l2 to the original position with the pawls i() out of engagementl with the ratchet wheel .41 of drinn 3l and into cngagenient with the fixed ratchet ring 38 to again hold the shaft 26 against movement for the rewinding of the spring hy the lever 22, pavvl 23, and ratchet wheel it l. purpose of the arcuate slot 47 is to permit a material movement of the segment 46 and bellcrank lever 50 by the trips 70, 7l without affecting the pin l5 and shaft i3 so that the final movement of the' segment 4G by the spring 53 will actuate the shaft 43.
