Be it known that I, Josnrn D. GILLAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident. of Providence, in the county of Providenc and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iii Buckles. of which the following is a speciw fication. This invention relates to buckles for belts. or similar articles and has for its object to{ provide such a buckle with a body portion} having its sides bent up from the face there-3 of and a biting jaw pivoted intermediate its edges in said sides one of the edges of said jaw being adapted to engage, grip, and bind one portion of the belt against the body portion of the buckle and'a connector memher to which the belt is attached, being pivotally connected to the opposite edge of said jaw.
A further object of the invention is to provide means in the body portion for guid-n ing the longitudinal motion of the connector member therein.
It is found in practice. that where the biting jawis rigidly attached to the connector member and the jaw engages a belt of unusual thickness, the connector is obliged to stand at an angle and project inwardly against the body of the wearer which is both wrong in' principle and uncomfortable to wear. To obviate this difficulty I have pivotally attached the connector member to the outer edge of the biting jaw and have guided this connector member in the body portion whereby it may slide longitudinally therein in releasing the belt, or adjusting itself to belts of different thicknesses.

The opposite or outer edge 19 of this bitwhich are engaged by ears 21 on the con-' nector member 22. This connector member extends longitudinally along on the inner side of the body member as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 and its outer end 23 is con-. nected to a loop 24: to which the end of the belt 25 is attached. A lip 26 is formed on the connector and is bent over backward and inward see Fig. 3 for the purpose of limiting the rearward swing of the biting jaw on its pivot 16, and the upper portion of this biting jaw is provided with a shoulder or rear wardly curved portion 27 adapted to engagr this lip 26 to assist in serving as a stop for its rearward swing. In assembling, first the jaw is pivotal mounted between the cars 21 in the co d. type of belt buckle the 16 which enter open-- being angles to the front plate thereof. I have shown and described one construction of my improved buckle but other oletails of construction may be employed without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
