To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY ALBERT GUT- LER, a subject of the -King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Belfast, in the county of Antrim, Ireland, have invented Improvements in or Relating to Means for Removing Deposit from Drains, Pipes, and the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to scraper arrangements for removing deposit from drains, pipes and the like of the kind comprising a single blade so hinged to a 'drawbar' or equivalent that on moving the arrangement into position for use the blade is caused to assume an inoperative position and on withdrawing thearrangement the blade is caused to assume its operative position.

Arrangements of the kind specified form the subject of application for Letters Patent granted to me, Serial No. 98,385, filed 18th May, 1916, the specification whereof describes examples wherein lines provided for moving the 'drawbar and blade or scraper alternately in opposite directions actuate position controlling means adapted to cause the scraper to fall down against the drawbar or take up an operative position according to the direction in which the lines are moved.

The present invention has for object to provide simple and eificacious means where- 'by for instance the-apparatus is rendered conveniently applicable to ordinary drain rods and for pipes, drains and the like of relatively small cross-sectional area.

For this purpose a device according to the invention comprises a drawbar provided with a forwardly extending supplementary portion on which the blade is pivotally mounted and which is capable by the act of moving the device inwardly or outwardly of a pipe of sliding longtitudinally relatively to the rearwardly extending main portion of the drawbar, the two portions coacting with connecting means that serve to move the blade into its inoperative or operative positions respectively.

The invention can be carried into effect in various ways, one example whereof, applicable for attachment to a drain rod, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 a side elevation of a device according to the invention showing the blade in its closed or inoperative position and Fig. 3 a View corresponding to Fig. 2 but showing the blade in its open or operative position.

According to this example the rearward portion a of the drawbar constitutes a sleeve adapted to so receive the inner end of the forward portion 0 carrying the blade d that the ortion '0 can be freely reciprocated therein, the interconnection between the portions 44 and 0 being effected by a link 6 pivoted at or near the circumference of the blade (Z to a lug thereon and at its other end to a lug g on the sleeve constituting the rearward portion a of the drawbar. The arrangement is such that pressure from the rear, as through the drain rod Z), when inserting the device into a pipe, will cause the portion a to slide forwardly along the companion portion 0, thus reducing the 'longitu dinal distance between their forward ends thereby causing the blade (Z to assume its inoperative position (Figs. 1 and 2). Conversely, upon pulling the drain rod 7) in the opposite direction the said longitudinal distance between the portions a and 0 will be increased and the blade 65 thereby brought into operative position, (Fig. 8). i I

To limit the relative movement between the portions a and 0 according to require ment, one thereof, may be formed with a longitudinal slot or slots having a length corresponding with the required degree" of travel and the other portion with a pin or pins projecting into the slot or slots. In the example the portion a is formed with a longitudinal slot h and the other portion a with a pin conveniently a set screw 7, that projects into the slot.

For attaching the device to the drain rod in such manner that rotation of either about its axis shall not involve rotation of the other, a swivel or like joint is interposed between the portion a of the drawbar and the drain rod. Such jointing means may comprise, as in the example, a pair of blocks 70 and Z or equivalent, slightly spaced apart one in front of the other, one end of the block Z1; having the portion a secured therein and the farther end of the block Z being secured as by a threaded part m to the cor-. respondingly threaded drain rod, the two being connected through alined longitudinal perforations n and 0 by a bolt 29 about the shank of which the block is and the drawbar can freely rotate relatively to the block Z and the drain rod.

What I claim is 1. Means of the kind described comprising a draw-bar composed of a'forwardly extending longitudinally movable supplementary member and a rearwardly extending main member, a blade pivoted intermediate of its width on said supplementary member, adapted when moved int-o its operative po sition to substantially fit the bore of the drain pipe or the like to be cleaned, means connecting the blade and the rearwardly extending main member of said drawbar, said means coacting, upon moving the device inwardly or outwardly of a pipe, with the blade and the rearwardly extending main member to effect a longitudinal movement of the supplementary member relatively to the main member and simultaneously to rotate the blade into aninoperative or operative position according to the direction of movement.

ing a drawbar, composed of a forwardly extending supplementary member oifset intermediately of its ends and a rearwardly extending main member, a blade, pivoted on said supplementary member at its ofiset portion, a lug on the blade, a corresponding lug on the main member and a link connecting said lugs, said link coacting with the main and supplementary members to efiect a longitudinal movement of the supplementary member to move the blade into an inoperative or operative position according to the direction of. movement.

8. Means of the kind described comprising a drawbar composed of a forwardly extending supplementary member and a rearwardly extending main member, a blade pivoted on said supplementary member, means connecting said blade and the main member, said means coacting with the blade and the rearwardly extending main member to move the blade into an inoperative or operative position as required, a drain rod fitting and connecting means between the rearwardly extending main member and said drain rod fitting adapted to prevent rotation of either causing rotation of the other. pivoted on said supplementary member, means connecting said blade and the main member, said means coasting with the blade and the rearwardly extending main memher to move the blade into an inoperative or operative position as required, a drain rod fitting and a swivel device connecting the rearwardly extending member and the drain rod fitting.

Means of the kind described comprising a draw var composed of a forwardly extending supplementary member and a rear wardly extending main member, a blade pivoted on said supplementary member, means connecting said blade and the main member, said means coacting with the blade and the rearwardly extending main member to move the blade into an inoperative or operative position as required, a bolt carried on the rearwardly extending main member, the head of said bolt being rotatably seated therein and a drain rod,

fitting secured to the shank of said bolt and adapted for attachment to a drain rod.
