Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 20, 1917. Serial No. 187,277.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM iiLnXAnnnr. ALL; N, of the village of Stouftville, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Engines and Turbines, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined engines and turbines in which the turbine will act as an auxiliary to the engine making available a considerable part of the velocity and heat of the exhaust gas or steam from the engine for the purpose of conversion into mechanical power thereby producing an increase of power, in which the turbine will also act as a muffler for the engine and take the place of the fly wheel and it consists essentially of the following arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.

In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
1 indicates the body of an engine, 2 and 3 the cylin ders the exhaust pipe and 5 the crank shaft of the engine provided with cranks 6 and 7 connected by piston rods 8 and 9 to the pistons 10 and 11 co-acting with the cylinders 2 and 3.
12 indicates a supplemental crank on the crank shaft 5. 13 indicates air compressing cylinder provided with piston 14c connected by a piston rod 14* to the crank 12. :15 indicates a chamber preferably carried by the cylinders 2 and 3 and connected by a pipe 15 to the top of the air compressing cylinder 13. 16 indicates a steam or exhaust gas chamber connected at its lower end at 17 to the exhaustpipe 4 and provided at its upper end with a nozzle 18 extending into the exterior nozzle 19 leading from and forming part of the chamber 15.

turbine parallel with the axis. 23 indicates a chamber located within the blades 22 the major portion of which is cylindrical in form and rovided with a port 2% on aosite' the mouth of the nozzle 19. The wall of the chamber below the port 2% is substantially S-shape in form, the portion curring backwardly toward the port 242 and forming at its end a boss through which a stationary supporting shaft 27 of the turbine extends. From this point the wall is provided with a backwardly curving portion 28 merging at its end in the cylindrical wall portion of the casing and at the end this chamber is provided with an end wall portion 29 forming an opening 30 through which the haust steam passes. It will be understood that the boss 26 is keyed or otherwise suitably secured to the shaft 27 so as to hold the chamber 23 stationary.
The plate 21 formin the end of the blade carrying member is provided with a central orifice 31. 32 indicates a series of radial blades extending between the central por tion 20* of the plate 21* and the outer portion 21. The supporting plate 21 is provided with a sleeve 33, which is journaled in a suitable bearing standard 3a. The opposite end of the shaft 27 is secured in a bearing 35.
36 indicates a worm secured to the sleeve 33. 37 indicates a worm gear meshing therewith. 38 indicates a shaft, to the upper end of which the worm gear 37 is secured. 39 indicates a worm secured to the lower end of the shaft 38 and 40 indicates a gear mounted upon the crank shaft 5 of the engine.
Having described the principal parts involved in my invention 1 will briefly describe the operation of the same.
Exhaust steam passes through the exhaust pipe 4: into the chamber 16 and simultaneously air is compressed in the cylinder 13 and forced into the chamber 15 so as to fill the space around the chamber 16. This air is heated by the exhaust gases contained in the chamber 16 and is carried by such exhaust and by reason of its own compression through the nozzle 19 against the blades 22 thereby carrying the blades circumferentially, the gases and air exhausting through the port 24: into the center of the turbine formed by the chamber 23, such exhaust gases and air being forced against the radial blades 32 thereby giving a second impulse to lhe turbine member.
The momentum given to the turbine by the impulse first upon the blades 32 and then upon the blades 32 is transmitted by the sleeve 33, Worm gear 36 and Worm 37 to the shaft 38 which is in driving connection with the crank shaft 5 of the engine, through the Worm 39 and Worm gear 40 and thereby acting as an auxiliary to the engine drive.
It will also be seen that the turbine being connected to the crank shaft of the engine acts as a iiy Wheel to steady the motion thereof and the exhaust oi the engine passinto the turbine, such turbine acting as a inufiier rendering the engine comparatively noiseless.
From this description it Will be seen that l have devised a very simple form of engine, which is provided With'an auxiliary turbine co-acting therewith and by Which the exhaust gases of the engine are utilized for heating air to drive such turbine. It Will, of course, be understood that as the air and gases pass from the blades 32 into the center of the turbine that they are carried against the concaved portion of the Wall 25 and are thereby directed backwardly so that they strike the blades 32 in such a direction as to drive the turbine in the same direction as is done by the impact of the air upon the blades 22.
Although in this specification I have described With great particularity the essential parts comprised in my invention it will, of course, beunderstood that I may make various changes therein Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
It may be further stated that the S-shaped chamber may be made more 55 like if desired so as to form a duplicate curved chamber portion on the opposite side of the shaft 27 a port similar to the port 24 being located diametrically opposite the port 24. This would double the capacity of the turbine without increasing its size.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a turbine, the combination with an outer and inner stationary casing spaced apart, of revolubly mounted heads forming the ends of the casing, and a circumferential series oi turbine blades carried by the heads and extending between the outer and inner *asings, and means for conducting steam radially inward through the inner and outer casings including radial fan blades and forming an auxiliary driving member.
2. The device 01"- claim 1 with the addition of having the radial blades depending from the periphery'of the inner revoluble head.
3. In a turbine, a stationary outer casing having a peripheral inlet, a stationary inner casing also having a peripheral inlet and an end outlet, revoluble heads for the casing, turbine members carried thereby and extending between the inner and outer casings, one of such heads having an open center, fan blades secured in such open center against the end outlet of the inner casing, and means for changingthe direction of travel of steam passing through the inlet of the inner and outer casings and between the turbine members into the interior of the inner casing as it travels against the fan blades.
