ROTARY BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Fateiited Apr. 9, 1.918.
Application mea February 2o, 1917. serial No. 149,885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAS JoHNsEN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at North Bay, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Brushes, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention has to do with improvements in rotary brushes adapted particularly for polishing purposes, as for instance, cleaning and polishing shoes, or treating other surfaces.
The object in view is to'provide a device of this type of simple construction embodying a motor suitably mounted in a casing so formed as to facilitate manipulation in use, the essence of the invention lying more -particularly in the arrangement of the brush thereon whereby it may be easily and quickly attached or displaced. I preferably employ associated with the brush a guard for preventing the substance applied to the brush from being thrown upon the operator by the rotative action of the brush.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all ,as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, portions being broken away and shown in section to disclose more clearly the details of construction.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the brush extremity of the device, having a different form of brush attached thereto.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the brush used with this device as shown in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4'is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, and specifically describing the invention l indicates a casing enlarged at one end to preferably receive an electric motor to which suitableelectric connections 2 lead. Centrally the casing is formed with a grip portion 3 by means of which the device is manipulated andat a convenient point in this portion is positioned a button switch 4 enabling the operator to start and stop the motor conveniently at will. The end portion of the casing-opposite the motor inclosed portion is formed with a laterally extending bearing 5 upon which is rotatably mounted a polishing brush 6. In this lateral extension a shaft 7 is mounted which at one end is operatively connected with the inotoi' by the driving shaft 8 and the gear elements 9 while its other end is suitably threaded as at l0 for connection with an internally threaded bushing l1 secured to one side of the brush by suitable fastening means 12. #The brush or polishing member 6 may be of any desired form, one of which is shown in Fig. 3. It is contemplated that di'lcrent types of brushes may be used with this apparatus, one for instance for cleaning preparatory to polishing and another `for polishing, as may be desired.
In Figs. 3 and 4, it will be observed that the brush is provided with an internal chamber 13 in which the polishing substance or liquid is introduced through an opening in the side which latter is provided with a closure cap 14. In rotating the brush atahigh speed the liquid is forced through the brush portion 15 by centrifugal action and may be applied to the object to be treated by proper manipulation of the casing hereinbefore described. In order to prevent the polishing substance from being thrown from the brush, I preferably attach to the casing so as to surround a portion of said brush a semi-circular guard 16 attached to the end portion of the casing by means of fasteningmembers 17.
Under certain conditions it may be desired to use a plain polishing brush such as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the outer peripheral portion of which is provided with a felt covering 18.
In use the required brush is slipped upon the lateral extension 5 and by starting the motor the threaded extremity of the shaft 7 will automatically engage with the bushing 11 thus enabling the brush to be quickly attached in place. v
It will be obvious from the foregoing that a very simple article is produced by means of which the labor and time of polishing may be substantially reduced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a device of the class described, the combination of a manipulative casing, a. motor mounted therein at one end, a grip portion intermediate said casing for facilitating manipulation of the device, a bearin extension projecting from said casing, a driving shaft mounted longitudinally of said casing, a brush having an axial recess in which the lateral extension is snugly received, a driven shaft journaled transversely of the casing y 5 in said extension and operatively connected to the driving shaft, said driven Shaft having a threaded extremity, and a threaded the driven shaft incident to the operation of 10 y the latter and thereby fastening said brush on the extension.
In testimony whereof I aflx my signature.
J EREMIAS JOHNSEN.
