To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY WVOJTAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present inven tion is the provision of a metallic form of rail that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture arranged with means for securely locking rails in their operative positions thereof.
A further object of the device is to provide a form of metallic railway tie adapted for mounting rails thereon without perforating or locking the rails in any manner and requiring only the use of a wrench.
A still further object of the device is to provide a metallic tie that possesses great strength and durability arranged with a quick action securing means for locking rails thereon readily releasable whenever desired.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of my device with rails operatively assembled therewith and shown in vertical transverse section,

Referring more in detail to the drawings, a tie 10 is provided in the form of an arch plate 11 mounted upon the flat bed-plate 12 and secured thereto in any desired manner such as by rivets 1?). Transverse slots 1e are Specification of Letters Patent.

provided in the top 15 of the arch plate 11 adapted for receiving the bases 16 of the railway rails 17 and suitably spacing the rails apart the distance of the gage of the road.
Locking means are employed for each of the rails for securing them to the tie 10 comprising a hook member 18, an anchor 19 and a tensioning nut 20.
The hook 18 comprises a block 21 having a hook 22 at one end thereof with a curved face 23, whereby the block 21 is adapted to slide longitudinally within the arch plate 15 for positioning the hook 22 overlying the inner edge 24: of the rail base 16. A bolt 25 projects from the block 21 and extends outwardly of the adjacent open end of the tie 10 adapted for slidably receiving the anchor 19 thereon by extending the bolt 25 through a perforation 26 in the upright post portion 2'7 of the anchor. A finger 28 perpendicularly projects from the too of the post 27 having a curved upper face and whereby the anchor 19 closely fits within the arch plate 11 in slidable relations with respect to the adjacent outer edge of the rail base 16 and over which edge the inner beveled end 29 of the finger 28 is adapted to project.
The positions of the hook 18 and anchor 19 in their operative arrangement with the base 16 of one of the rails 17 is best illus trated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, it being understood that the nut 20 is threaded upon the bolt 25 outwardly of the anchor 19 for moving the anchor and the hook 18 toward each other for locking said members upon the rail base 16 with the rail thereby secured to the arch plate 11. It will be seen that the rails 17 are each secured in a similar manner to the tie 10 at points adjacent the opposite ends thereof, while the rails may be readily released from the hooks 18 and anchors 19 by removing the nuts 20 and at which times the rail 17 may be readily separated from the ties 10.
The form of the device herein illustrated in Figs. 7 to 10 of the drawings provides a tie 10 formed of an arch plate 11 of substantially the same form as the plate 11 heretofore noted while no base plate is employed, the opposite flanges 21 resting directly upon the road bed. A cut away portion or slot 14 is provided in the top 15 of the tie 10 adapted for the seating of a railway rail 22 therein. A saddle 23 is formed beneath the slot 14 by downwardly sinking the portion of the plate 11 for forming the slot 14.
A fastening means for the rail 22 consists of a hook Qet having a substantially rectangular shank 25 slidably positioned within the saddle 23 for engaging the free end of the hook 26 over the inner edge of the base 27 of the rail. A finger 28 having a block 29 at its outer end is slidably positioned in the open end of the-tie 10, an opening 30 being arranged in the block '29 through which the shank 31 of the hook 2 1' extends. A nut 32 is threaded upon the outer end of the hook shank 31 for engaging theblock 29 and forcing the finger 28 over the outer edge of the rail base 27-. 7
With the elements assembled as best illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings it will be seen that the hook portion 26 and the finger 28 will be tightened upon the rail base 27 by tightening the nut 32, thus preventing removal of the rail 22.
A strong and serviceable metallic tie is provided which may be easily and quickly locked to a rail and the rails therefore easily released at will. i
What I claim as new is:-
1. A device of the class described comprising an arch plate having a transverse slot in the top thereof adapted to receive a railway rail, oppositely positioned hook and fingermembers slidably mounted within the top of said plate adjacent the opposite sides of said slot and adjusting connections for the said hook and finger operable adjacent the end of the plate whereby the said hook and finger are adapted for locking engagement with the rail when positioned within said slot.
2. A device of the class described comprising an arch plate having a transversely arranged curved top provided with a transverse slot adapted for receiving the base flange of a rail, a block form of hook positioned inwardly of the slot slidably engaging the curved top of the plate with a portion adapted for arrangement within the slot when the device is assembled, a finger member slidably arranged upon the said hook adjacent the outer end of the plate slidably engaging the curved top of the plate and having a portion adapted to project within the slot when the device is assembled and adjusting connections between said hook and finger members.
provided with a transverse slot in the curved top thereof, a rail seated within the said slot, a hook member slidably arranged with in the plate beneath the rail having a curved portion engaging the top of the plate and overlying the adjacent inner edge of the base flange of the rail when the device is assembled, a finger member slidably mounted upon the hook member adjacent the outer end of the plate with a portion of the hook member engaging the curved top of the plate and overlying the adjacent outer edge of the base flange of the rail when the device is assembled and adjusting means between the said hook and finger members whereby the latter are adapted for locking upon the rail with the rail secured to the tie.
4. A device of the class described comprising a tie formed of an arch plate having transverse slots in the top thereof, a bedplate secured to the bottom of said arch plate, rails seated within said slots, hooks slidably positioned within the arch plate inwardly of the rails adapted for overlying the inner edges of the base flanges thereof, anchor members fitted within the outer ends of the arch plate slidably mounted upon the said hooks engaging the curved top of the arch plate adapted to overlie the adjacent outer edges of the base flanges of said rails and adjusting means upon the outer ends of said hooks engaging said anchor members.
5. A device of the class described comprising a tie formed of an arch shaped plate having a downwardly struck saddle provid ing a transverse" slot in the top thereof, the said slot being adapted to receive a rail therein, a rail locking hook positioned within said saddle slidable longitudinally of the plate with a hooked portion projecting within the slot from the inner edge thereof, a finger member adj ustably mounted upon the said hook adjacent the outer end of the plate adapted for projecting inwardly of the outer edge of the slot during the operation of the device and adjustable locking means arranged upon said hook in contact with the finger member at the outer end of the plate.
