COLLAPSIBLE BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application led June 23, 1916. Serial No. 105,381.
To all w 7mm, t may concern Be it known that l, JoranT C. TANDY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chloride, in the county of Sierra and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Collapsible Beds, of which the following is a s aecification.
The present invention relates to beds and has particular refe ence to new and useful improvements in collapsible bed frames and springs for use in automobiles and other vehiclcs.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a bed of the class described which may be folded into a. compact form for storage in a trunk or the like or for attachment to the rear of a motor vehicle or the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide improved means for maintaining the bed frame and springs in a horizontal secure position for use. l also provide means for detachably associating the bed frame with the springs for facilitating packing. The device is also suitable for holding` the bed clothes when folded, acting as a container.
@ther objects and advantages to be de rived from the use of my improved bed will appear from the following detail description and the claim taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan viei f of a bed frame and springs embodying the improvements of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the same;
Fig. 3 i-s an enlarged fragmental perspective view of one of the intermediate spring.
carrying slats; and
4 is a side elevational view of one of the side frames of the bed showing the same in folded position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 and 2 designate in their entireties, the side frames of my improved bed, said sie frames being practically identical in construction and best shown in Fig. 4. Referring speciically to Fig. 4 the frame is composed of a pair of relatively long sections 3 and 4 and a pair of relatively short sections 5 and 6, said sections 3 Iand 4,4 5 and 6 being hinged as shown, rer folding. @he free ends of the sections 4 and 6 are provided with recesses 7 and 8, respectively. Both of the side frames of the bed are similarly formed.
rEhe spring or mattress supporting ele ment of my invention includes end stringers 9 and 10 adapted for reception, at times, in the recesses 7 and 8 formed in the free end sections of the side frames 1 and 2. A plurality of spring supporting elements 11 are connected at their free ends, as at 12 and 13, to the end stringers 9 and 10, said spring elements being arranged longitudinally of the bed and in parallel relation. plurality of intermediate stringers 14, 15 and 16 are provided, said stringers having U-shaped hook members 17 on the free ends thereof for engagement with the side frames. The members 17 are best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A plurality of helical springs 18 are mounted on the intermediate stringers 14, 15 and 16, said springs 18 serving to support the longitudinally extending spring elements 11, transverse rods 19 engaging all of said spring elements 11 to maintain the spring structure level.
A. second set of spring elements is provided arranged in the form of trusses, wire strands 2O converging as at 21 and 22 and connecting as at 23 serving to form said truss. A pair of coil springs 24 and 25 connect with the strands 2O at the point 23, further strands 26 and 27 se 1ving to anchor the free ends of said springs to the end stringers. rl`he strands 2O are anchored as at 28 to the intermediate stringers 14 and 15.
The intermediate stringere having the U- shaped portions 17 connect with the side frames adjacent the hinge portions thereof whereby to serve to strengthen said side frames when the bed is set up.
yIhus it will be seen that when it is desired to set up my improved bed the side frames are placed across the seat of a vehicle or the like with the hinges thereof on the under side. The spring is now applied to the side frames in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the U-shaped portions 17 being engaged with the side frames. The bed is now set up and the mattress and bed clothes may be placed thereupon.
It will be readily apparent that owing to the position of the hinges of the sections of the side frames accidental collapsing of the bed in use is rendered practically impossible The peculiar engagement ef the end stringers With the side frames also insures a rigidity of structure When the bed is in use.
The simplicity of construction of the device is one of its greatest advantages it being possible to apply the bed to various useslw'ithoutv altering the structure thereof. Of course, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the form of bed spring' employed, in view of the fact that transverse 'springs may be" employed in conjunction with the longitudinal springs, or various arrangements Vof the spring elements may be lprovided Without departing from the spirit of my invention. I desire to lay particular' vstress upon the improved construction of the. side frames as Well as the engagement of the end stringers, in conjunction with the strengthening intermediate stringers and their connecting means.
If desired, legs may be provided, said legs being foldable. These legs may be left folded when the bed is in use as an automobile bed. I do not limit myseli:l tothe material used, since the sides may be made of tubular metal.
From the above description taken 4in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and While I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart `from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
' Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as nevx7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a collapsible bed, side members formed of hingedly connected sections having the opposite endvs'thereot recessed, stringers engaged with said recessed ends, other stringers having" hooked ends engaged with said side members and arranged below the same,
cushioning means carried by said other Stringer-s, 'a spring structure carried by the stringers and the cushioning means of Certain thereof, and truss means arranged longitudinally ot' the spring structure having the intermediate portions thereof connected to said other stringers andV ends of the same connected to said first mentioned stringers.
In testimony' whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
JOHN c. TANDY.
