To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Piru, in the county of Ventura and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Breeding-Capsule Injectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a surgical instrument and particularly pertains to a breeding capsule injector.
W hen animals are bred without intercourse, it has been the practice to inject seminal fluid drawn from the male of the species into the uterus of the female of the species by using a syringe or by positioning a gelatin capsule containing the fluid into the mouth of the uterus. This last-named operation has previously been performed by hand and it is the principal ob ect of this invention to provide an instrument by which the uterus may be easily-reached and a gelatin capsule forced through the mouth thereof.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view in section and elevation illustrating the complete instrument and particularly disclosing the injector with its plunger, indicated by solid lines, in its inoperative position, and by dotted lines its extreme operative position.
Fig. 2 is a view in section and elevation as seen on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and particularly disclosing the formation of the uterus cup and the plunger rod locked.
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective illustrating the injector in detail.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a plunger rod which is formed of a straight cylindrical bar of metal and is provided at one end with a handle 11 and at its opposite end with a plunger 12. r
The plunger 12 is threaded into position and is arranged to reciprocate within an injector case 13. This case is preferably formed of hard rubber and has a central longitudinal capsule tube 14.. jector is a uterus cup 15 which presents a concave cup portion within which the end of the uterus may rest and by which the movement of the injector is limited. The rear opened end of the tube 14: is adapted to be closed by a threaded cap 16, which limits the outward movement of the plunger 12 and also acts to lock the plunger against inward movement when desired. This locking action is produced due to the fact that a cylindrical opening 17 is formed through the cap to accommodate the plunger rod 10 and that slotted openings 18 and 19 are formed at the opposite sides of the cylindrical opening and through the These stop openings are to accommodate stop pin 20 which extends through the rod 10 and transversely thereof and may pass through the openings 18 and 19 when in register therewith. The movement of the plunger through the tube 14 is limited by a collar 21 upon the rod 10.
In operation, the gelatin capsules 22 are filled with seminal fluid obtained from the male of the species by any preferred method, after which the capsules are positioned with the tube 14:. Reference being had to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the forward end of the capsules are of a conoidal shape and that the opposite end is substantially flat, having its corners slightly rounded. The tube 1-1 is so designed as to cause the conoidal end of the capsule to extend outwardly from the end of the tube and act to form 'a continuous conoidal end surface by the assembled tube and capsule. When in this position, the plunger 12 will be receded within the tube and the pin 20 will be upon the outside of the cap 16 with the rod turned so that this pin will not register with the openings 18 and 19 through the cap. The injector may then be inserted into the vagina of the animal to be bred by the rod 10 and forced inwardly until the conoidal end of the capsule opens and passes into the mouth of the uterus. This forcing action is continued until the mouth portion of the uterus rests within the cup 15, after which the rod 10 is rotated to bring the pin 20 into register with the openings 18 and 19. This rod is then forced inwardly as the pin will pass through the cap 16. The plunger 12 will then force the gelatin capsule from the end of the tube, depositing it within the cavity of the uterus. The injector may then be Withdrawn by drawing upon the plunger rod 10 until the plunger strikes the inner face of the cap 16, after which the tube 14c will be withdrawn from the mouth of the uterus to allow it to close and envelop the capsule When the entire device has been withdrawn from the vagina, the breeding operation is complete.
It will thus be seen that the device here disclosed provides a simple method of pr0- ducing the result desired and insures that the capsule will be properly placed Without injury to the animal.
While I have shown the preferred form of my breeding capsule injector as now known to me, it is evident that various changes in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts may be made by those skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
1 claim:
A breeding capsule injector, comprising a cylindrical capsule tube having a tapered outer edge adapted to be inserted within the mouth of the uterus, an annular uterus cup formed around the rear portion of the tube and within which the mouth portion of the uterus is adapted to rest, a plunger adapted to reciprocate within the tube and to eject capsules therefrom, a cap formed upon the rear end of the tube and having an opening therethrough, a plunger rod secured to the end of the plunger and extending through the cap, a lock pin positioned upon said plunger rod, means whereby the lock pin Will hold the plunger against movement and release the plunger by manipulation of the rod, and a stop collar positioned upon the rod to limit the ejecting movement of the plunger.
