GATE-HINGE.
Specification of Letters `Batent.
Batented Apr., 2, llfl.
Application filed December 14, 1918. Serial No. lf.
Be it known that I, Enron C. Cnoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewistown, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Gate-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hinges and has for its primary object the provision of a door or gate hinge which will be extremely simple in construction and operation as well as highly efficient in use.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a hinge which will be composed of the minimum number of parts and in which the hinge will be constructed in such manner as to permit the door or gate to be raised from upon the same when in one position and securely lock the gate upon the hinge when in its closed position.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel form of hinge member which will include a lug for locking the complementary hinge member upon the same and preventing removal of the second hinge member except when in one position.
Vith these and other objects in view as will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically set forth, pointed out in the appended claim and shown in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of hinges constructed in accordance with my invention and employed for supporting a fence gate in position,
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with a gate indicated in open position, by dotted lines, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail elevation of one of the hinge members.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, 1 designates the shank of one of thehinge members and which shank has its free end tapered and threaded, in order that this hinge member may be readily secured in the fence 3 ora door frame, with the turned and reduced end 4 of said hinge member directed upwardly to receive the other hinge member, as will be readily understoodby referring to the drawings.
rlhe other or complementary hinge member is adapted to be secured to the gate or door 5 and consists of a strap member G bent upon itself and having its long end secured to the gate or door by suitable securing members 7, some of which also eX- tend through the bent back outer end 8. lin bending the strap member 6 upon itself, an elongated opening or loop 9 is provided, one end of which is enlarged and rounded to receive the end l of the first mentioned hinge member, the second mentioned hinge member resting upon the shoulder 10 formed at the bottom of the upstanding end t of the first mentioned hinge member.
A locking lug 11 is formed on the side of the upstanding end 4 and adapted to pass through Jrhe narrow end of the opening or loop 9 when the gate or door 5 is in open position. lt will therefore be seen that as soon as the gate or door is moved toward its closed position, the complementary hinge .iember 6 is locked upon the iirst mentioned hinge member and removal of the gate or door is prevented by the lug 11.
ln -Fig. 1, l have shown the gate or door of the fence as being mounted upon a pair of 'hinges but the lug 11 is carried by the stationary member of the upper hinge only. Therefore the same' reference characters have been applied to the members of the lower hinge and the securing members for the same. lt will also be understood that the lug 11 may be employed upon more than one hinge, if desired, and any number of hinges may be used to support the gate or door.
ln Fig. 1, l have shown a fence gate 5 as locked in closed position, by the conventional form of latch 12, mounted upon the door by the pivot member. 13 and limited in its swinging movement by the guide 14C, a guide 15 being mounted upon the fence 3 adjacent the side of the door to receivethe latch member 12. fis this forms no part of the invention, it is believed that further description of the same is unnecessary.
l/Vhile the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
I claim- A hinge comprising complementary meinbers7 one of said meinloe 1s including a threaded shank provided at one end with a vertical post and with a raised shoulder sin1- rounding` the base of said post, and a lug integral with said post adjacent its upper end and extending,` outwardly therefrom at right angles to the Shank; the other member including strap made of a thickness corresponding to the Width of said shoulder and folded at one end to embrace the poet, said folded end being curved to embrace the post to form an eye and then extended a short distance in spaced parallelism With the main loody of tlierstrap to provide a sgece communicating with the eye and adapted to accommodate said lug, said folded end being finally turned inwardly at right angles and extended to lie flat against the body portion of the strap, in order to be secured thereto.
in testimony whereof I aiiix my sinature in presence of two Witnesses.
