EYEGLASS-CLEANER.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1918.
Application filed July 21., 1917. Serial No. 182,014.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLIS FAnnows, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Eyeglass-Gleaner, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is an. eye glass cleaner wherein a liquid container and swab are associated, and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide an eye glass cleaner which will thoroughly wash. the lenses, second, to provide a liquid container and a wick or swab associated therewith, third, to provide a cap for normally inclosing the swab and means for gathering the swab to receive the cap, fourth, to provide a simple and efiicient eye glass cleaner.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the in vention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
One practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cleaner liovitio the cap removed and the sleeve drawn ac r.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference:
The device consists of a tubular member 1 in which is a transverse wall 2. The wall 2 may be integral with the tube 1 or it may be rigidly affixed therein by soldering or otherwise. The wall 2 divides the tubular member into a chamber 3 and an open compartment 4, and said wall is centrally bored and tapped, as indicated at 5.
A tubular member 6 has a centrally apertured plug 7 secured in one end, and said plug is formed with a preferably integral nipple 8, threaded to engage the threads of the bore 5. A sleeve 9 encircles the tubular member 6 on which it slides, and said sleeve is provided with an angled slot 10 adapted to receive a boss 11 which is secured on the outer surface of the tubular member (3. As will be evident, the sleeve may slide longitudinally of the member (5, its motion being limited by the boss 11 and, when the sleeve is in its forward position, it may be partially revolved to bring the boss into the angled or offset portion of the slot and so look the sleeve against longitudinal movement. A cap 12 is adapted to embrace the end of the sleeve 9 to close the device when not in use.
A swab 13 is placed in the member 6 as shown, and this swab is preferably formed of a strip of felt, one edge of which is slit, as indicated at 14, and the felt then twisted into a cylindrical swab, as shown. lVhen so twisted, the slit edge will form a brush which will spread evenly over the lens and wash the same.
While the device is shown herein as of circular cross section, it is understood that any shape desired may be given the parts, and that the device may be made in various sizes and of a variety of materials.
In practice the device is operated as follows: The parts being separated, a cleaning solution is poured into the chamber 3. The member 6 is then inserted in the compartment 4 and the nipple 8 screwed into the bore 5. l/Vhen the device is to be used, the cap 12 is removed and the sleeve drawn back so as to expose the swab.
The end of the swab is then placed against the surface of the lens and rubbed lightly thereon until each surface is washed. The sleeve is then drawn forward to gather or confine the swab, and the cap placed on the end.
The lenses, after being washed, may be dried in any desired manner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is:
1. An eye glass cleaner, comprising a casing, a wall within the casing and provided with an aperture, a tubular member formed to slide within the casing, a nipple on the tubular member and entering the aperture, a swab loosely mounted in the tubular member and a cap for inclosing the swab.
2. An eye glass cleaner, comprising :1 casin, a wall within the casing and provided rounding the tubular member with a threaded aperture, a tubular member in the casing, a nipple 011 the tubular memher and threaded into the aperture, a fabric swab in the tubular member a sleeve surancl sliclable to gather the swab, and a cap for engaging the sleeve to cover the swab.
fiep flee of this patent may be obtained for In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
