Be it known that I, HOWARD M. DUDLEY, a itizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dyeing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dyeing machines and refers particularly to those machines suitable for the dyeing and treating of fabrics-in a stretched condition.
In the treatment of piece goods or fabrics it is frequently necessary to dye them, thoroughly wash and then treat with air for the purpose of drying the goods or oxidizing the dyestuff.
In order, therefore, to produce satisfactory' results it is essential that all of these treatments should be conducted in a thorough and uniform manner, as each step of the process has a material effect upon the result produced. 7
I have accomplished these results by means of the device of my invention, in which the dye solution, water or air is caused to disperse evenly and equally throughout the fabric, while the reel carrying the fabric is being revolved in the presence of dye liquor in the case of dyeing and in the presence'of water during the washing, if desired.
I further enhance the value of the results by means of foraminous members carrying projections extended toward the fabric, said foraminous members being both within and and claims.

A receptacle is comprised of the botto member 10 and the top member 11, hingedly attached to the bottom member at 12. The top inembcr 11 carries the pipe 13 having the valve 14, the pipe 13 being attached to the pipe 15 by means of the coupling 16. The pipe 15 has the valve 17 and discharges into the upper portion of the tank 18 and carries the pipe 19 with'the valve 20.
Within the receptacle is a revoluble reel comprised of the two side flanges 21, 21 and the two cylindrical foraminous members 22, 23 integral with the flanges. The flanges 21, 21 extend outwardly into the two concshaped members 241, 246*. Fixedly attached to the member 2% is the cogged wheel 25, meshing with the worm gear 26 which is fixedly attached to the shaft'27, which carries the two cogged wheels 31, A cogged wheel 33, capable of enmeshment with the wheels 31, 32 is fixedly attached to the shaft 34 connected with a source of power.

Entering into the members 24-, 2 1 are the stationary pipes 29, 29, a tight joint between the two series of members being maintained by the stuffing boxes 30, 30, the pipes 29, 29 are connected with the delivery sides of the pumps 35, The pumps 35, 35 are connected with the pipes 36, 36 having the valves 37, 37 and the pipes 38, 38* having the valves 39. 39 I The receiving sides of the pumps 35, 35 are connected with a fourway coupling hav ing the pipes 40, 40 with the valves 41, 41 42, 42 witlrthe' valves 43, 135 anda, 1 1 with the valves 45, 455. The pipes 42, 12 are connected with the bottom of the tank 18. The pipesfit, 44 are connected with a of fresh water. The pipes 36, 36* are connected with the atmosphere and the pipes 38, 38 with an air pump.
A thermometer 46 is connected into the space 47 between the plates 22 and 23.
A pipe 48 with the valve 49 is connected tothe bottom of the receptacle.
A fabric 50 is wound around the foraminous member 23, and a chain cover 51 is wound around the fabric 50.
A steam pipe 52 is introduced into the lower portion of the receptacle.
The foraminous member 22 comprises a series of bars 53, 53 between which are the spaces 54, 54.
The foraminousmember 28 comprises a' series of parallelupwardly and downwardly extended members 55, 55, alternate sides of which have the transverse openings 56, 56 and the longitudinal openings 57, 57.
The chain cover 51 is comprised of a series of pyramidal shaped links 58, 58, pivotally engaged with each other by means of the pivots 59, The length of this chain cover can be lengthened or shortened by means of the clamping member 60, capable of adjustment around the pivots 59, 59 and being held in position by the screw bolt 61, unnecessary linkg being thrown out of position for engagement. There are spaces within and between the links to allow of the passage of a liquid.
The operation of the device is as follows: The fabric 50 is wound around the cylindrical plate 23, and the chain-belt 51 is fitted closely around the fabric and clamped in position. The top member 11 is closed upon the bottom member 10, and the reel revolved and the pumps 35, 35 started. All the valve are closed with the exception of 45, 48, 43 14 and 17. The dye liquor is thus forced through the reel, the pipes 13 and 15 into the tank 18 from which it passes back to tie pumps by means of the pipes 42, 42 \lhen sufficient dye liquor has been introduced the valves 45, 45 are closed. the pipes 29, 529*, the tubes 28, 28 through the foraminous member 22 into the chamber 47 and from thence through the foraminous member 23, the fabric and the chain member 51.
When the fiber is dyed sufficiently the pumps are stopped and all of the valves with the exception of 49 are closed and the llquor is drained from the receptacle.
When it is desired to wash the fabric, all of the valves are closed with the except1on of 41, 41 14 and 20 and the pump started.
When it is desired to force air through the devlceall of the valves are closed with the exception of 39, 39 14 an d 17, and th pump stopped.

I do not limit myself to the partlcular size, shape, number or arrangement of parts as disclosed, all of which may be-var ed without going beyond the scope of my invention as described and claimed.
What is claimed, is: V
1. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a receptacle, a reel having imperforate s1des an inner foraminou cylindrical member integral with the imperforate sides of the reel, an outer foraminous cylindrical member spaced from the inner foraminous member and integr'al with the imperforate sides of the reel, a series of tubes abutting upon a portion of the inner face of the inner foraminous member and extending outwardly of the hollow core of the reel, each of the tubes abutting upon a transverse section of the foraminous member, a second series of tubes abutting upon the remaining portion of the inner face of the inner foraminous memher and extending outwardly of the hollow core of the reel in a direction opposite to that of the first series of tubes, each of the tubes abutting upon a transverse section of the foraminous member, means for passing air and liquids through the tubes during the revolution of the reel and means for revolving the reel.
2. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a receptacle, a reel having imperforate sides revolu'ble within the receptacle, an inner foraminous cylindrical member integral with the sides of the reel, an outer foraminous cylindrical member having outwardly extended members capable of supporting a fabric wound thereon spaced from the inner foraminous member and integral with the sides of the reel, a removable flexible foraminous cover capable of close adjustment around the fabric, two series of oppositely divergent tubes covering the inner face of the inner foraminous'member, each of the tubes abutting upon a transverse section of the foraminous member, each series being connected with a pump and means for revolving the reel.
3. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a; receptacle, a reel havingimperforate sides revoluble within the receptacle, an inner foraminous cylindrical member integral with the sides of the reel, an outer foraminous cylindrical member having outwardly ex-- tended members capable of supporting a fabric wound thereon spaced from the inner foraminous member and integral with the sides of the reel, a removable flexible foraminous cover capable of close adjustment around the fabric, a series of tubes, each tube abutting upon a. transverse section. of the inner face of the inner foraminous member and extending outwardly of the hollow core of the reel, a second series of tubes, each tube abutting upon a transverse section of the inner face of the inner foraminous member and extending outwardly of the hollow core of the reel in a direction opposite to that of the first series, means for passing air and liquid through the tubes and means for re volving the reel.
4. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a receptacle, a reel having imporforate sides revoluble within the receptacle, an inner foraminous cylindrical member integral with the sides of the reel and having longitudinally disposed openings, an outer foraminous cylindrical member integral with the sides of the reel and spaced from the outer fora-minous member and having a series of outwardly extended members, a removable flexible foraminous cover capable of close adjustment around a fabric wound around the outer foraminous member, a series of tubes abutting upon approximately one longitudinal half of the inner face of the inner foraminous member and extending outwardly through the hollow core of the reel, a second series of tubes abutting upon the remaining portion of the inner face of the inner foraminous member and extending outwardly through the hollow core of the reel in a direction opposite to that of the first series, means for passing a liquid through the tubes, means for passing air through the tubes, means whereby the liquid may be withdrawn from the receptacle above the reel, and means for revolving the reel.
5. In a device of the character specified, in combination, a receptacle, a reel having imperforate sides revoluble within the receptacle, an inner foraminous cylindrical member integral with the sides of the reel and having longitudinally disposed openings, an outer foraminous cylindrical member in tegral with the sides of the reel and spaced from the inner foraminous member and having a series of outwardly and inwardly extended members with openings within the sides thereof, a removable linked chain foraminous cover capable of close adjustment around a fabric wound upon the outer foraminous member, a series of tubes, each tube opening upon aportion of the inner face of the inner foraminous member and extending outwardly through the hollow core of the reel, a second series of tubes, each tube of which opens upon a portion of the inner face of the inner foraminous member and extends outwardly through the hollow core of the reel in a direction opposite to those of the first series, means for passing air through the tubes, means for passing a liquid continuously through the tubes during the revolution of the reel, means for revolving the reel and means for removing a liquid from the receptacle.
6. In a device of the character specified, in combination, a receptacle, a reel having imperforate sides revoluble within the receptacle, an inner foraminous cylindrical member integral with the sides of the reel and having longitudinally disposed 0penings, an outer foraminous cylindrical member integral with the sides of the reel and spaced from the inner foraminous member and having a series of outwardly and inwardly extended members with openings within the sides thereof, a removable linked chain for-aminous cover capable of close adjustment around a fabric wound upon the outer foraminous member, and having inwardly extended members, the diameter of said cover being capable of change without removal of links of the chain, a series of tubes covering the inner face of the inner fo'raminous member and extending outwardly through the two ends of the hollow core of the reel, means for continuously passing a liquid and means for passing air through the tubes, the foraminous cylindrical members, a fabric wrapped upon the outer foraminous cylindrical member and the linked belt cover during the revolution of the reel, means for heating the liquid Within the receptacle, means for withdrawing the liquid from the recepta cle and means for revolving the reel.
