WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. a, 191e.
Application -filed January 26, 1918. Serial No. 213,945.
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO F. LEITNER, a citizen of the United States,l residing at Nipomo, in the county of San Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved wrench of the spanner type.
An object of the invention is to produce a simple, .cheap and thoroughly effective wrench of this class which may be used in close places, and wherein va posltive engagement 1s maintained between the jaws of the wrench and the articles operated on by the wrench to provide a powerful bite or purchase by the entire surfaces of the side and inner walls of the jaw of the wrench to insure the positive turning of the nut with only a minimum physical exertion. l
In carrying out my lnventlon it is my purpose to constructJ a spanner wrench in which the faces of the heads, upon one of the sides of the handle are arranged at an angle with respect to the handle, and the inner walls between the jaws of the heads struck at a true right angle from the said angular faces of the heads, whereby such inner wall, in addition to the enga ing edges of the side walls of the jaws w1ll contact with a majority of the sides or facets of a nut and grip the same at the entire surfaces provided by such walls, the' angular arrangement of the handle permittlng the operator to actuate the wrench from a desired distance outward of the nut.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the invention is better un* derstood, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, 1n w ich, Figure 1 is a plan vleW illustratlng a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention engaging a hexagonal nut.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View approxlmately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, the wrench being removed from the nut.
The wrench is formed from a single piece of suitable material, and includes a handle 1 having its ends formed with heads 2. The heads have one of their faces parallel to the longitudinal plane of the handle and their other faces are disposed at an angle with respect to the plane of the handle as indicated by the numerals 3. Each of the heads is provided with parallel spaced jaws 4 4, which are straight, and the inner wall 5 between the jaws is struck at a true right angle from the inclined surfaces 3 of the heads. This is the vital feature of the invention, because the inner wall is thus permitted to engage with at least two faces or facets of a hexagonal nut, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings,'the inner straight edges of the jaws engaging with two of the facets, and thus it wlll be noted that a majority of facets on the nut are contacted by the jaws for the entire width or thickness of the jaws, including, of course, the inner wall between the jaws. The handle bein arranged at an angle with respect to one of the faces of the heads of the wrench permits of the wrench being employed in close places.
From the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought, that the simplicity and advantages of the construction will be apparent without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A spanner Wrench including a straight handle having heads formed on the ends thereof, one of the faces of each of the heads being parallel to one of the sides of the handle, and the other face of each of the heads being arranged at an angle with respect to the handle, each of said heads comprising spaced jaws, the inner faces of which being straight, and the connecting wall between the jaws being struck at a true right angle from the angular Surfaces of the said heads.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature.
HUGO F. LEITN ER.
