To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALONZO I-I. BnnKLrrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesboro, in the county of Franklin and.
State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer-- tain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties'for Railways, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in metallic ties for railways, one object of the invention being the provision of a tie provided with receptacles or pockets for the receptionl of wooden spike receiving blocks, said blocks being so constructed as to receive the rail base, there being means further provided for permitting vthe removal and renewal of the blocks without lowering the tie or raising or removing the rail.
A further object of this invention is Vthe provision of a tieof this character-which has all of the advantages of a wooden tie and none of the disadvantages of the metallic tie in that the body of the tie is made of metal and is provided with rail base receiving removable wooden blocks or plugs, the
receptacles for holding the vsame being each provided with a removable gate or retaining plate so that such block may be inserted or removed from the end of the tie without disturbing the tie or rail.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete tie, the same being broken in the center to reducek the length thereof.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through one end of the tie.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the tie proper which is made of metal and provided with the central connecting portionr which is an inverted V- shaped member made hollow with the anges 7 provided with beveled edges 8 so that the material of the road bed may be gripped therein to assist in holding the tie against longitudinal or transverse creeping.
At the opposite end -of the connecting porreception of the rectangular tion G is a wall 9 which with the two walls 10 provides a receptacle or pocket 11 for the substantially frusto-pyramidal wooden blocks 12 which are of a greater length than the depth of the pocket as clearly illustrated, so that the4 Y taining plate or door 15 whose upper edge is adapted to be in the same plane as the upper edge of the walls 10.
By this construction it will be seen that when the tie is once placed in position with relation to the rail and any undue wear is effected upon the block 12, that the gate or retaining member 15 can be removed, the old block being withdrawn from below the rail without disturbing either the tie or rail and a new block similarly positioned.
It will be noted that the lower edge of the retaining gate or plate 15 is provided with a recess portion 16 which in addition to providing for a drain for the pocket also provides for the introduction of a tool topry or lift the gage upwardly to free the plug 12.
By making the blocks of wood or other spike receivingmaterial the advantage of the wooden tie is retained while the life of the main tie'member is greatly increased due to the same being made of metal.
What I claim as new is:
1. A metallic tie having at each end thereof a three walled receptacle open adjacent the outer end of the tie, the two opposite walls adjacent the open end being provided with alined grooves, and a removable retaining wall insertible in said grooves, the lower edge of said retaining wall being recessed to permit of the removal of the wall.
2. A metallic tie having at each end thereof a three walled receptacle open adjacent 'the outer end of the tie, the two opposite Walls adj aeent the open end being provided with alined grooves, a removable retaining Wall insertible in said grooves, the lower edge of said retaining Wall being recessed to permit of the removal of the Wall, and a spike receiving blockV removably mounted in being insertible throngh the open end of the 10= receptacle after the Wall is removed.
