To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY J. Prom. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of and whose post-oflice address is Lockland,
Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1nSp1icingMachines, of which the following is a specification.
My inventionrelates to splicing machines, and is especially adapted for use in splicing the ends of felt or similar material used in the manufacture of prepared roofing. My invention is, of course, adapted to be used for splicing any other material together. 1

In the drawings, 1, 1 are rolls of felt suitably mounted on rolls 24 supported on shaft 25 on bracket 26 projecting from vertical standard 27. A is a frame or table supporting my splicing apparatus. 2 is a roller loosely mounted in bearings in blocks 14 over which the felt 1 passes. 3 is a roller loosely mounted in bearingsin-the blocks 15 under which the belt passes. 4 4 are dies adapted to be heated and to be brought together so as to compress between them the spliced joint. 16-, 16 are frames mounted on the support or table A through which the shaft 19 passes. Fixedly secured on this shaft 19 are eccentric cam's 5, 5.whiclh are so arranged that rotation of the shaft 12 by the lever 6 tends to force the links 20, 27 down carrying with it the upper die 4 so as to compress same against the lower die. The dies 4, 4 are, as shown,- steam-heated, although they may be heated by any suitable means.
In the drawings, 9 is a pipe from any suitable steam supply leading to the upper die and 1'0 is a pipe leading from the far end of the upper 'die, as shown in Fig. 1, to the near end of the lower die, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. 11 is a pipe leading from the lower die to permit the same to pass out therefrom.
Mounted upon the frame A are located blocks 17, 17 through which passes the shaft 23 adapted to be operatedby the lever 13. Upon this shaft 23 are located eccentric cams 8, one near each'end of the shaft and adapted, when the shaft 23 is rotated by the lever 13, to carry the link 22-upward or downward depending-upon thedirection of rotation of the shaft so as to move the rollers 7, 7 which are rotatably mounted in the vertically movable blocks 28, 28, towdrd. or away from each other. By rotating the lever 13 clockwise the eccentric cam 8 carries the link 22 downward so as to force the upper roller 7against the lower roller 7, thus compressing the felt 1 between them and-locking it in position.
The end of the felt from the lower roller having been reached, the lever .13 is operated so as to move the eccentric 8 to carry the link 22 down, forcing the two rollers .7, 7, together, thereby locking the felt against movement. .As a reserve feed apparatus is used in connection. with my splicer where it is desirable to have a constant and uniform feed of the felt, the reserve feed. allows for the continuous feed while the splicing operation is being carried on. The end of the felt having been treated with an adhesive, or any other material so as to make the splice, the end of the felt from the upper roller is applied to it and the joint is allowed to pass between the two dies 4, 4 by permitting the locking rollers 7, 7 tooperate so as to permit the spliced joint to come in proper osition between the dies 4, 4, when the loc inlg rollers 7, 7 are again brought together. hen the lever 6 is operated, causing the eccentrics 5, 5 to operate the links 27, 20 so as to move the upper die down against the lower die,
