FILTER.
7 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 26, 1913- Application filed April 28,1916. Serial No. 94,098.
Toall whom z'zf may concern: j
Be it known that I, CAsPER T. BUOHER,
a citizen of the United States, andresident and two outlet passages, oneofwhich latter leads to a cistern or like receptacle and has a filtering screen disposed across the same,
whilethe other outlet passage leads to a waste or other pipe. A valve or like de vice within the casing is adjustable to deflect the waterv through either of the said outlet. passages as maybe desired. In the use of filters of'thisclass, more or less trouble is caused by reason of the fioatings or other foreign material in the water accumulating on the screen and closing the openings of the same to such an extent as to substantially shutoff the flow of the mind this objectionable feature incident to the use of many 'filters now in use, it has been the mam object of my present invention to provide an improved filter of the type referred. to, in which thefilter screen 7 will be kept free of the floatings or other properly perform itsnormal function. This,-
and other objects and advantages to be re-' 1 foreignmaterial in the water and thereby constantly maintained in] a condition to ferred to during the course of the detailed description of the invention which follows, are attained by means of my improved filter as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation" of the filter, with the contained parts shOWn by broken and dotted lines,
Fig. 2 is a section of the same taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a side View of a spout forming part of the filter, removed from its position within the casing of the filter.
Similar reference characters indicate like parts on the several figures of the drawings.
acle for straining or-filp indicated at 2, is provided with an inlet pipe 3, and two outlet pipes, d and 5, the pipe 4 being adapted to direct the water through a suitable conduit to a cistern orother receptacle, and the pipe 5ordinarily termed the waste pipe-being adapted to receive the water when it isdesired to cut off the same from the cistern. n
Supported in the. casing 52 above the The main casin screen'6, which, in accordance with a-preferred form of my invention, is arranged with its upper portion 6 in a substantially vertical plane, or in one only slightly in- 'clined to the vertical, and with its lower portion 6" extending at a reducing angle of inclination to a point above the waste outlet 5. a
For directing the water received into the casing from the inlet 3, outwardly through either of the outlets, a spout 7 is supported beneath said inlet and is adjustable to direct the How of the Water through either of the outlets as desired. Said spout 7, as here shown, is attached to the lower end of a pipe section or sleeve 8 which is rotatably and removably supported in the inlet pipe by means of an annular rib or collar 9 thereon resting upon the upper end of said inlet pipe, as shown in Fig. 2.
The spout 7, when turned or adjusted to its normal position for directing the water through the screened outlet ,4, as indicated by brokenlines in Fig. '1, is disposed at an 'angle oppositely inclined to that of the screen and with its discharge end opposite and adjacent to the upper portion of said screen, as shown. With this relative arrangement of the screen and spout, the water will be discharged from the spout in a' concentrated volume against the screen, and this, in view of the angle of inclination of the opposed screen, will prevent any accumulation of the fioatings in the water on the screen such as might tend to choke up or clog thelatter, such fioatings being washed downward over the face of the screen to the waste outlet 5.
To facilitate the ready passage of the floatings downward over the screen, the latter is preferably formed of smooth-surfaced sheet material having perforations therein, here shown in the form of elongated slots 10 arranged in staggered relation. The relatively smooth surface presented by such a month of the outlet 4:, is an-inclined filter tendency to catch and hold the floatings.
Also, as a means to further concentrate the volume of water discharged from the spout against the screen, the end of the spout is made somewhat restricted in width as shown in Fig. 2.
When itis desired for any reason to cut 011' the flow of water to the cistern, the spout 7 will be turned or adjusted to direct the flow, of water through the outlet 5, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. As a means to accomplish this, the rib or collar 9 on the spout-carrying sleeve 8 is provided with a thumb-plate 11 which may be conveniently grasped by hand for turning said sleeve Within the supporting inlet pipe 3. This thumb-plate 11, as here shown, is positioned centrally above the discharge end of the spout and therefore also serves as a means for indicating the position of the spout within the casing relative to the outlet openin s.
0 provide ready and convenient access to the interior of the casing for cleaning the screen or any other purposes, the casing is provided with a cut out portion in a position opposite the screen which is normally closed by a hinged cover 12.
The filter may be supported in position for use in any desired manner, the same as here shown being provided with hooks 14,
ii, at opposite sides thereof for detachably Copies of this patent may be obtained for fastening the filter to a building or other desired support, a a
l Vhat I claim is: V 3 1. A filter, comprising a casing having an inlet and a plurality of outlets, a filter screen located over one of said outlets in an inclined position, and a spout located beneath the inlet in a normal position oppositely inclined to the filter screen and discharging directly against the same, said spout being rotatable; on a substantially vertical axis for movement to a discharging position over either of said outlets.
2. A filter, comprising an inlet pipe and a plurality of outlets, a filter screen located over one of said outlets, a sleeve rotatably fitted in said inlet pipe and provided with a proj ection resting on the upper edge of the latter to removably support the sleeve in the inlet pipe, said sleeve carrying at its lower end a spout which is shiftahle by a turning movement of the sleeve to a discharging position over either of said-outlets, and a thumb-plate fixed to the sleeve exterior of the casing as a means for turning the same and alsofor indicating theposition of the attached spout relative to the outlets.
