COMBINED TAPE AND ATTAGHING-MEMBER RETAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1918.
Application filed January 8, 1916. Serial No. 71,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. ORE- winnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tapes and Attaching-Member Retainers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a device adapted to retain a tape section and also an attaching member, as, for instance, a safetypin, in fixed relation to one another.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified which is cheap and simple of construction and neat of appearance.
A further object of the invention is to so arrange the device that the securance of both the tape and attaching member is a simple and quick operation.
A further object of the invention is to secure the tape section in a manner to eliminate any sewing or other puncturing of the body of the tape fabric.
The invention further consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the device of the present invention with the tape and attaching member held in position thereby;
Fig. 2 is a section, on an enlarged scale, on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow; and
Fig. 8 is a section, on an enlarged scale, on line 33 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
In the art to which the present invention relates, means must be applied for attaching the end of a suspending strap of a garter or similar appliance to the clothing of the wearer. This is usually accomplished by means of a safety-pin or some similar attaching member, and it is necessary to hold one end of the suspending strap in fixed relation to this attaching member. The device of the present invention is for the purpose of carrying out these functions.
Referring now to the drawings, the device is shown as applied to a tape or webbing 4, which is usually of the elastic variety, and is further applied to a safety-pin 5, which is a form of attaching member used for securing garters or other suspending devices to the clothing of the wearer.
The retaining member which forms the subject matter of the present invention comprises a body 6 of metal and is preferably of one-piece construction. The body is bent into a U-shaped formation, producing an outer section 7, an inner section 8, and a connecting portion 9 between the outer and inner sections. The outer section is provided with a slot or recess 10 medially of its length, which slot extends in a horizontal plane, as will be seen from Figs. 1 and 2. The free end of the inner section 8 is bent to form a flange 11, and the length of this section is such that said flange lies in aline- .ment with the slot 10.
In use, the bar 12 of the safety-pin or other attaching member is inserted into the space between the sections 7 and 8, which space, in fact, constitutes a pocket 13. The bar 12, which is attached at one end to the coil 14: of the pin, and at its opposite end to the clasp 15, when inserted within the pocket 13, lies in the position shown in Fig. 3. Thus the attaching member is secured against movement out of position from said retainer, sidewise movement being checked by the coil and clasp of the pin, upward movement by the portion 9 of the retainer, and downward movement by the tape lying below the attaching member.
A fter the safety-pin has been inserted, the tape l is placed in the pocket, and the rear section 8 is swaged or bent inward, the flange 11 acting to force the portion of the fabric alined with said flange into the recess or slot 10, positively securing said tape to the attachment. By this means it will be seen that the tape and safety-pin are held in fixed relation to one another in a simple and easy manner, and without the necessity of sewing or otherwise puncturing the body of the tape, which, in the case of elastic tape, tends to sever the elastic strands, allowing them to draw or shrivel, thereby destroying the full elasticity of the tape.
The device is simple of construction and neat of appearance, and is of practical value in the manufacture of these articles owing to the reduction of time necessary in assembling the parts, as well as in the fact that no waste of tape is indulged in in joining the tape and attaching member together.
I claim:
A combined tape and attaching member retainer, comprising a body composed of a single piece of metal bent midway its length into inverted U-shaped formation, providing a front wall, a rear wall and a top wall, said front and rear walls being spaced apart to provide a slot closed at its upper end and open at its lower end, a safety-pin having its lower bar inserted in said slot and 1ying adjacent the closed upper end thereof and held against upward movement out of said slot by said closed upper end, said front wall having a recess therein, an inwardly extending flange from the rear wall alined with said recess, a tape section, the end of said tape section being inserted in said slot and extending to a point adjacent said Copies 0! this patent may be safety-pin bar, said flange when the front and rear walls are pressed toward one another forcing a portionof said tape end into said recess and clenching said end within said slot, and said end when so clenched closing the open lower end of the slot and BENJAMIN F.
