FOLDING SEAT FOR-.JUVENILE VEHCLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed September 1, 1917. Serial No. 189,277.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Janns R. Mnnonn,`a citizen of the United States, and resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Folding Seat for Juvenile Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiic'ation.
This invention relates lto folding seats, and more particularly to a seat of this character adapted for use in juvenile pushwagons.
The object of my invention is the provision of a seat of the class described, which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and adapted when not in use to be folded up below the top surface plane of the wagon-box ioor and to form a part of such floor, and when iu use to be raised to form a seat in elevated relation to the box.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a juvenile wagon embodying` the invention with the seat in raised position. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section of the box porion thereof with the seat in full and in raised position, and Fig. 3 is a similar view with the seat in full and in closed or folded position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the box of a juvenile push-wagon, the bottom 2 of which is provided with an opening 3. The under side of the wagon bottom is provided at the front and rear edges of the opening 3 with cross-pieces or beams el and 5, respectively, and the bottom edges of these cross-pieces have inwardly projecting flanges 6.
A seat-support 7, which may constitute a single broad or board-like post member, is hinged at its. rear end to the rear crosspiece 5, as at 8, and is adapted to have swinging movements through the opening 3 and when in folded position to rest at its front and rear ends on the respective flanges 6, 6,
with its top surface below the plane of the under side of the box bottom. The free or forward end of the support 7 is provided with one or more seat engaging tenons 9.
The seat comprises the front upright or supporting member 10 and the horizontal seat member ll, which are hingedly connected at their adjacent edges for folding movements one over the other. The upright member l0 is hinged at its lower edge to the front cross-piece 4, as at 12, to adapt it to rest in horizontal or reclining position over the lsupporti in a plane immediately below the plane of the under side of the box bottom 2. `When the upright 10 is in such folded position the seat member 1l, which is hinged to the upright l0, as at 13, extends forward from the rear edge 'of the member 1'0 in iilling relation to the opening 3 of the box bottom, thus forming a portion of such bottoni. The seat member ll is provided with openings, not shown, into which the tenons 9 lit when the seat is in raised or usable position, as shown in Fig. 2.
lt is evident that the seat practically comprises only three members, namely, the standard T, upright lO and seat member 11 and that when the seat is in folded position said three members lie in a horizontal plane one over the other in the order given, with the seat member 11 forming the closure for the opening 3 in the box bottom. It is also evident that the seat is capable of being easily and quickly folded or unfolded and that when in unfolded or usable position it forms a rigid and practical seat on which the user of the wagon may sit as he pushes the wagon along with one foot.
While the invention. is particularly described for use in connection with a juvenile wagon it may also be used in connection with other wagons or similar vehicles.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described myinvention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a wagon-box having an opening in its bottom, of crosssupports provided on the under side of the box bottom at the front and rear edges of said opening, and a seat com rising front and rear upright members an a seat mem,d
ber supported by said upright members and all foldable through said opening one over the other between said cross-pieces and sup- Y ported thereby, with therearmost member,
when folded, resting directly on the sup-vr ports. Y
2. The combination with a wagon boX having an opening in its bottom, of supporting members secured to the under side of the boX adjacent to the front and rear edges of said opening, a support hinged to lie between and be supported by said front and rear members and torbe raised through said opening to upright position, a front upright member and a seat member hinged together and to the under side of the bottom adjacent to the front edge of said opening for folding movements one over the other in and below lsaid opening and upon saidy support When in folded position, said support when 1n and when'in folded position to lie over the supports within ,saidv opening. Y
il. The combination with a bottom member having an opening therein, of front and rear supports hinged adjacent to opposite walls of. said opening in planes one above the other, and a seat member Vhinged to the free edge of one of said supports and adapt-V ed toy releasably engage the other of said supports whereby it is held in raised position thereby, said supports and seat mem berrwhen in folded relation lying in reclining position one'o-ver' another in said opening with the Vseat uppermost.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signedmy name to this specification.
A JAMES R. MERCER.
