NTISLIPPING DEVICE BOOTS OB SHOES.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. 'WATER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Priest-River, in the county of Bonner an State of Idaho, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Antislipping Devices forBoots or Shoes, of which the followino is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to Aan improved anti-slipping device for boots or shoes, and has for its primary object to provide improved means on the sole of heavy rubber boots or shoes such as are generally used by\ lumbermen, which will-elfectually prevent slipping or slidin of the foot.
sis
.in the manner of attachin ia fi The invention as for another and more particular object to provide a device of the above character consisting of a plurality of raised Vshaped rods or cleats' molded u on the rubber sole of the shoe and a plura ity of calks projecting from the face of each of said cleats.
It is a further object of my invention tov provide a device of the above character which will be very effective in actual use, and may be embodied in the manufacture of the shoe at nominal cost. v
lrVith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement ofv parts to be hereinafter more xfully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is an inverted pers ective `view of a boot or a shoe provided with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section showthe calks; and
gs. 4 and 5 are detail agmentar. perspective views illustrating' two di erent forms of the ends of the cleats.
Referring in detailV to the drawing, 5 designates the bodyv of a rubber boot or shoe having a heavy sole 6, the surface of which is roughened or corrugated in the usual manner. Upon the bottom surface of this shoe sole, across the widest portion thereof, the raised V-shaped ribs or cleatsl' are mold-v ed or integrally formed. The points or a exes 8 of these cleats are coincident with t e longitudinal center of the shoe sole, and from the same, the arms or branches of the cleats diverge rearwardly to the outer edges In Fig. '5 of the drawin Specification of :Letters` Patent. I Patented Mar. 19, 1918. Application led April 15, l i 4 i 1916. Serial-No.9178.
of the sole. The cleats 8, at their ends, gradually decrease in thickness and vmerge into the outer rounded edges of theshoe sole. These cleats may be of the same `mate rlal as the shoe sole and integrally formed therewith or of a dilferent material and suitably secured to the sole of the shoe.
rn addition to the dans 7, a relatively,
short transversely extending curvedgcleat 10 is formed upon the toe of the shoe sole. The side face of each of the cleats is outwardly beveled or inclined, as at 11', to provide shelving surfaces which ope-rate so-as to prevent the collection and retention of snow between 'the cleats, said shelving surfaces'of the cleats causing the snow to readily slide olf of the cleats.
The heel 12 of the shoe is also provided with araised marginal cleat or rib 13, the inner side face of which is beveled or inclined, as at 14.
Each .ofthe cleats or ribs is provided upon its bottom face with calks 15, said calks having elongated shanks 17 to extend through the cleats and the sole of the shoe, the ex` tremities of said Shanks being clenched upon head, a washer plate 18`is engaged and preferably shrunk thereon. These washer plates engage with the faces of the ribs or cleats so as to edectually prevent the calks being forced through or embedded in the rubber cleats. y
g, I have shown the cleats as provided at their extremities with the construction and sev-eral advantages o I .`my invention will be fully understood. -By
the provision of the raised ribs or calks upon the shoe-sole carrying the metal calks,
slipping or sliding of the foot of the user` upon treacherous-surfaces, will be eectually prevented. Thecleats maybe readlly formed or molded .upon the rubber sole of the shoe alsv -thc relatively abrupt end faces which arebeveled. or inclined outwardly and merge4 in its manufacturenat but slight additional cost and the metal calks readily applied thereto.
While I have shown what I behave. te be` fore, reserve the rivlege of resorting to all such legitimate c anges as may be fairl em- ,bodied within the spirit and scope of t e invention as claimed,
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I desire to claim and secure hyLetters Patent is )Jabber boot or shoey having a plurality remesa Y of spaced V-shaped (cleats molded upon'the sole thereof with their pexes pointing forwardly, the arms of the cleats divergng p rearwardly and merging 'into the body of the 20 shoe sole at the. opposite ed es thereof, theA "P extremities of each of the. c eats bein beveled and the outer faces of the cleats eing t also beveled the beveled portion of the cleats providing shelving :al1-rimes. In testimon twhereof I hereunto signaturein t e presence of 'two witnesses.
