HOOD FOR FIBEPROOF CURTAINS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Original application filed December 1, 1911, Serial No. 663,190. Divided and this application filed July 7,
1914. Serial No.849,554.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hoods for Fireproof Curtains, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for preventing excessive heat and flame from gaining access to the rollers of fire proof curtains and especially to prevent the heat from depriving the springs of such rollers of their temper, and to prevent the passage of flame through the hood.
The invention is embodied in the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, herein described and then claimed at the end of the description.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical cross sectional view through the hood, the curtain, the roller and the device for preventing access of heat to the roller.
Fig. 2 is a front view broken out at the middle.
In the views 5 designates end brackets fastened to the wall at the opening to be closed and for supporting the roller and hood. 6 designates the roller which is journaled in said end brackets as usual. 7 designates the fire curtain which is attached to the roller and is flexible to be wound up thereon. In the lower portion of the hood is shown a longitudinal flange 5 to contract the normal opening through which the curtain is passed to usual Vertical channels 8 at the sides of the opening to be closed.
The means for preventing the fire from passing from one side of the curtain through the hood or housing and around the other side of the curtain consists of baffle plate 9 pivoted on a journal or shaft 10 between the brackets so as to close the opening which comes into action'not only in an emergency but whenever the curtain is drawn down to its full extent. This is accomplished by means of a pin 11 acting on an arm 12 when the curtain is drawn down. This repeated action prevents bearings from becoming rusty and insuring that the baflie plate will operate when it is needed. Because the bafile plate is controlled directly from the curtain, it will always be in position when the curtain is down so that it does not depend upon a dangerous rise of temperature to place it in working position and therefore with the curtain affords a perfect fire proof covering which may be placed in position across an opening before a fire reaches it.
The application for patent is a division of that filed by me December 1, 1911, S. No. 663,190.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a hood, a curtain roller mounted in the hood and a fire curtain on said roller, said hood having an opening for the passage of the curtain, of a cover movably mounted in the hood independently of the curtain adjacent to said opening, and means on the upper portion of the curtain for actuating the cover to close said opening when the curtain descends.
2. The combination with a hood, a curtain roller mounted in the hood, and a fire curtain on the roller, said hood having an opening in the bottom thereof for the passage of the curtain, of a cover mounted in the hood adjacent to said opening, a flange on the interior of the hood, and means on the upper portion of the curtain for causing said cover to be swung across said opening to cooperate with said flange to prevent fire from contacting with said roller and pass ing around the roller from one side of the curtain to the other.
3. The combination with a hood, a curtain roller in said hood, said hood having an opening for the passage of the curtain, a curtain on said roller and extending through said opening, a cover movably mounted in the hood independently of the curtain on the side thereof which rolls onto the roller, and means on the upper portion of the curtain to actuate the cover when the curtain descends to cut off access of flame to the roller.
EZRA B. SMITH.
