'To all-whom z't may concern.' f
Be it known that'I, SAMUEL Wns'rnnmm, a citizen of Norway, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Brushes, of which` the'following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in curry brushes and one object is tov produce a device for grooming animals and pre,- venting loose hair and dirt from liying about during the process. Means for sucking the loose dirt into a receptacle are provided which receptacle can be emptied when desired. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved curry brush'partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
FFig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-'3 of Fig. 4 isa verticaly longitudinal section through the housing over the brushes.
gig. 5 is a detail of the adjustable dust tu e.
Fig. 6 is a slightly modified form of the bearing for shaft 13.
Like reference characters indicate correspending parts throughout the several views.
My brush comprises the metallic base 1 which is oblong in shape and which is cut away in part to allow for the rotary brushes used. In the base 1 wooden blocks are secured that form the bases of the brushes 3, 4 which are arranged at opposite ends of the base 1. Between the `brushes 3, 4 the base is cut away to permit operation of the rotary brushes 5, 6 which are mounted, respectively, upon shafts 7, 8 disposed in suitable bearings carried by the base 1. Upon one endvof each of the shafts 7, 8 gears 9, 10 are' secured which both mesh with the master gear 11 provided with the handle 12 and disposed upon the shaft 13 journaled in bearings-14 carried by the base 1.
A housing 15 secured to the base 1 extends over the rotary brushes, one end of said housing bein hinged as at 16 and formed with a projection 17 for frictional engagement with the spring 18 -disposed specification of Letters Patent'.

closed ositionbut by depressing said springA the sai '.hinged end may be manually raised to permit access to the brushes. Secured to the housing 15 and within the same are combs19, 19 in contact with the rotary brushes to clean them as they operate. From themhousing 15 a dust tube 20 extends 4to another housing 21 disposed upon -the; base above the brush 4 and in the housing 21 a partition 22 is vdisposed in which one end of a fan shaft 23 is journaled, 'the other end of said shaft being journaled in the end wall of the housing and a fan 24 is mounted upon said shaft in alinement with the end of the dust tube 20, said fan 24 drawing the ldust and dirt out from the brush housing into housing 21. The shaft 23 is connected i by a bevel gear 25 with a shaft 26 which at its other end is provided with a pinion 27 engaging the gear 11.
Within the housing 21v a plurality of shelves 28 apertured and screened at 28a and each formed with upper and lower ribs 29 are supported upon uprights 30 which maybe removed from said housing. A suction pipe 31, secured to the base 1, is partly disposed between the rotary brushes and runs from side to side of the said base 1 and into the housing 21, and said pipe comprises an outer and an inner tube,A each of which is i provided with a plurality of apertures 32;
the said apertures of the two tubes being made to register with each other'or to be moved out of alinement with each other through the medium ofa ring 33 secured to the inner tube and by which ring said tube may be rotated independently of said outer The draft caused by operation of the fan 24 exhausts the air from the housing 21, the dirt settling upon the shelves thereof, and forces it through pipe 31 and out through the pipe openings 32 into the rotary brushes 5, 6 again to loosen the dirt theretary brushes intermediate .of the irst-referred to brushes, a housing for said rotary brushes, a second housing for receiving dust and provided with a rotary suction fan at one end, means for effecting the conjoint actuation of said rotary fan and said rotary brushes, a suction pipe in communication with both of said housings, and a dust-tube between the rotary-fan chamber and the housing of the rotary brushes, said dusttube having its outer wall in continuation of a wall of said rotary brush housing and an inner Wall thereof depending in the form ythe other rotary brush.
of a comb engaging one of said rotary' -brushes, said rotary brush housing having 15 arranged therein a similar comb engaging In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aixed my signature 1n the presence of two subscribing wit- 20 nesses.
