Be it 'known that I, JAMES F. CURTIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pitcairn, R. F. D. No. 1, in the county of VVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dynamo-Electric Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dynamo-electric machines, and it has special reference to the construction of ventilating supporting means for the commutator cylinders of such in achines.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means of the above-indicated character which shall permit of particularly effective ventilation of the various parts of the dynamo-electric machine. I
In many types of dynamo-electric machines heretofore employed, it has been customary to provide commutator cylinders comprising a plurality of segments or bars severally provided with dove-tail projections, or lugs having notched edges, and a pair of annular members or V-bars for clamping the commutator segments in position. These V-bars have customarily been of solid construction, bolted together and, consequently, have prevented the direct passage of air to the inner portion of the machine core and have also precluded the possibility of effectively ventilating the inner periphery of the commutator cylinder.
According to my present invention, I provide a commutator cylinder of usual construction, and a pair of annular members or V-bars which have a plurality of spaced openings longitudinally extending through them, a portion of the openings registering with suitable ventilating openings in the core of the machine. The two V-bars are preferably secured together by means of bolts or similar clamping devices which are located intermediate the spaced openings referred to, thereby permitting of a relaaccordance with my invention;

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a View, partially in longitudinal section and partially in elevation, of a portion of a dynamo-electric machine constructed in view, partially in end elevation and partially in section, of certain parts of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, in end elevation, of a portion of the structure illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawing, the portion of the dynamo-electric machine shown comprises a suitable centrally-disposed shaft 1 around which is assembled an armature 2 of ordinary construction, embodying a core member 3 through which extends a plurality of preferably longitudinally-disposed ventilating openings 1; a commutator cylinder comprising a plurality of annularly assembled bars or segments 5; my improved ventilating supporting means 6 for the commutator cylinder; and a suitably perforated end-plate 6 that is disposed intermediate the core 3 and the means 6, in accordance with usual practice.
The commutator bars 5 are severally provided with radially disposed internal clovetail projections or lugs 7 having notches 8 cut in their opposite ends. The supporting means 6 comprises an annular member or V-bar provided with a flange 9 for engaging one set of the edge notches 8 and having a plurality of internally projecting spaced lugs 10; a second annular member or V-bar having its innermost periphery 11 fitted around the shaft 1 and being provided with a suitable flange 12 for engaging the other set of edge notches 8, and having one portion 13 of its outer periphery fitting within the lugs or projections 10 and another portion 1& thereof disposed within the flange 9 of the first-mentioned V-bar. The secondmentioned V-bar is provided with a plurality of spaced longitudinally-extending openings 15 which are adapted to respectively register with the spaces between the several projections 10 of the other V-bar and with the openings in the end-plate 6 Suitable insulating material 16 is preferably interposed between the two V-bars and the adjacent surfaces of the commutator cylinder, in accordance with customary practice. For securing the two V-bars together, a plurality of suitable clamping means, such as bolts 17, are provided, which extend through suitably threaded openings in the second V-bar intermediate the spaced openings 15 and through similar openings 18 in the corresponding projections 10 of the first Fig. 2 is a V-bar.
It will be noted that my invention affords a relatively simple and inexpensive means for providing a substantially unobstructed ventilating passage-Way from the exterior of the machine, through the inner portions of the commutator cylinder and t0 the ventilating openings 4 in the machine core, thus supplying a relatively large quantity of ventilating air to the parts of the dynamo-electric machine without sacrificing the mechanical strength or reliability of the supporting means for the commutator cylinder.
I do not wish to be restricted to the specific structural details or arrangement of parts herein set forth, as various modifications may be made in my invention, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. For example, a similar construction to that herein described may be employed in the end-plate assembly at the rear end of the core. I, therefore, desire that only such limitations shall be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an armature member for dynamoelectric machines, the combination with a commutator cylinder comprising a plurality of bars severally having radially disposed internal lugs, of a plurality of interfitting members engaging opposite ends of said lugs and having a plurality of spaced openings longitudinally extending through said members, and means located intermediate said openings for securing said members together.
2. In an armature member for dynamoelectric machines, the combination with a commutator cylinder comprising a plurality of similar bars severally provided with radially disposed internal lugs having end notches, of an annular member having a flange for engaging one set of said end notches and having a plurality of spaced internally disposed projections, a second annular member having its body portion fittin within said flange and within said projections and provided with a flange for engaging the other set of said end notches said last member having a plurality of longitudinally disposed openings respectively registering with the spaces between the projections of said first member, and clamping means for said members respectively extending through said last member intermediate said openings and through the corresponding projections of said first member.
3 An armature for dynamo-electric machines comprising a shaft, a magnetizable core member and a commutator cylinder mounted on said shaft in side-by-side relation, the said core member being provided with longitudinal passages, supporting members for said commutator cylinder provided with openings registering with said passages and means located intermediate said openings for securing said members together.
