BOTTLE AND JAR CLOSURE.

Application filed December 30, 1916. Serial No. 139,790.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ODOARDO A. TORRAZZA, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of the city of Panama, Republic of Panama, have invented certain Improvements in Bottle and Jar Closures, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to construct a bottle or jar stopper which will be firmly held to the bottle or jar, and which can be readily opened by shifting a lever carried by the stopper.
A further object of my invention is to so construct the gripping means of the stopper that a sealing wire can be applied.
The invention is primarily intendcdas a temporary stopper, but it can be used as a permanent stopper if desired.

Referring to the drawing, 1 is the bottle, in the present instance having a mouth 2 and an annular groove 3 on the exterior of the month end. 4 is the casing of my improved hottle stopper made of sheet metal and having a flange 5 which extends over the edge of the bottle and centers the stopper in respect to the bottle. Located within the stopper is a washer 6, preferably of cork, which rests against the end of the bottle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that, when the stopper is locked to the bottle, the joint is air and fluid tight. Projecting from the opposite sides of the stopper 4 areears 7. 8, 8 are retaining hooks mounted on pivot pins 9 carried by the ears, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The hooks 8 are made of metal bent into shape, as clearly shown in Fig. 7, having a coiled engaging portion 10, which is so shaped as to enter the groove 3 at the mouth of the bottle, and also has a fiat hearing portion 11 for the ball ends of the locking lever.
12 is a locking lever consisting of a body portion 13, which extends through a trans- .verse opening in the metallic portion of the bottle stopper, as shown in Fig. 1, and curved portions 14, which rest in grooves 15 in the hooks 8 when in the closed position, as in Figs. 1 and 2. At the end of this curved portion are balls 16, which rest against the fiat bearing portions 11 of the retaining hooks. lVhen the lever is moved to the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the retaining hooks are forced into the recess 3 of the bottle, causing the stopper to be pressed tightly on the end of the bottle and making a tight joint between the washer ('3 and the mouth end of the bottle.
When it is desired to open the bottle, all that is necessary is to turn the lever 12 from the position illustrated in Fig. 2 to that illustrated in Fig. 3, when the retaining hooks are released and the stopper can be quickly detached from the bottle. When the stopper is to be applied to a bottle, all that is necessary is to mount it in position and to swing the lever from the position illustrated in Fig. 3 to that illustrated in Fig. 2.
It will be noticed that the locking hooks are perforated at 17 so that a wire 18, Fig. 8, can be passed around the neck of the bottle and through the perforations. The wire can be twisted and a seal applied, as at 19, so as to prevent any one tampering with the contents of the bottle. By merely cutting the wire and shifting the lever, the stopper can be opened and can be used again to close the bottle, since the stopper is not destroyed, or its efficiency in any way lessened when detached.
My improved stopper can be inexpensively made and can be ornamented so as to present an attractive appearance. If desired, it can be made out of silver, or other material, so as to correspond with the finish of a more expensive receptacle of cut or etched glass, it being especially applicable to close bottles such as are used in traveling bags, because the contents will not leak or run out when my improved closure is used.
I claim 1. The combination of a bottle having an annular groove near its mouth end; astopper adapted to close the mouth of the bottle and having two rigid retaining hooks pivotally mounted thereon and arranged to 1 enter the groove of the bottle; means for rigidly holding the hooks in the closed position; and means jonrnaled in the stopper and arranged to swing with respect thereto to release or engage the hooks,
