Description

W. H. PIPER. SEPAHABLEY BUTTON SHANK. APPLICATION FILED SEPT.5. 1916- Patented Mai. 12,1918.
. fiV VENTOR.
W ATTORNEY WILLIAM H. PIPER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
SEPARABLE BUTTON-SHANK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 5, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. PIPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of, Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Separable Button- Shanks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in separable button shanks.
Gnc of the objects of my invention is to provide a separable button shank which may be attached to a garment independently of a button, and to which buttons of various kinds, sizes and shapes may be affixed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a separable button shank which may be attached to a garment by securing threads independently of a button, and in which the securing threads will be protected and not exposed to wear.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved separable button shank.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the button shank shown attached to a garment and to a button provided with holes for receiving securing threads.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 showing a button, provided at its inner side with a cloth extension for receiving the securing threads, mounted on the head of the shank.
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 5'showing the position of the shank to be the reverse of that as shown in Fig. 5.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
The button shank 1 is tubular and is provided in its interior, preferably adjacent to its inner end, with a transverse bridge 2 adapted to be embraced by securing threads 3 which extend through the goods 4 of a garment. The threads 3 are entirely encircled by the shank 1, so that they are not subjected to wear due to abrasion of a garment or other article which may be affixed to the button carried by the shank.
The inner end of the shank l is provided,
Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
Serial No. 118,388.
preferably, with a peripheral annular supporting flange 5, which is adapted to bear upon the outside of the goods 4;.
The outer end of the shank l is provided with a head 6, preferably having a concave outer side upon which is adapted to be supported a button of any desired ordinary kind. In Fig. 5 is shown a button 7 of the ordinary type having holes adjacent to its center for receiving the securing thread.
The head 6 is preferably provided with a plurality of holes 8. The securing thread 3 may be passed upwardly through one of the holes 8 and through one of the holes in the button, thence through another of the holes in the button and through another of the holes 8 in the head, thence back and forth in the manner described until the button has been firmly sewed to the shank head 6.
In Fig. 6 is shown another kind of button mounted on the head 6. This button 9 is of the kind having a central cloth extension 10 on its inner side, the extension being disposed in the concavity of the head 6 con.- centrically of the shank 1 and in position such that the thread 3 may be passed therethrough and at the same stitch through two of the holes 8 of the head. By passing the thread 3 through one set of holes 8 and then in the opposite direction through another set of holes 8, and back and forth in this manner through the extension 10, the button 9 may be securely fastened to the head 6.
In case that a button is broken from its fastenings, the shank will still be firmly secured to the garment, and the head, in some instances, if desired, may be employed to serve the function of the button until another button is obtained and sewed thereto.
It will be noted that the annular flange 5 is concave on its inner side and that the bridge 2 is outside of the plane of the outer edge of the flange. By means of this construction, the securing threads 3 which embrace the bridge 2 have their inner portions protected by the goods i, which are drawn by thesecuring threads into the concavity of a the flange, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
From the above-description it will be seen that the threads 3 which embrace the bridge 2 are encircled by the shank and are thereby fully protected from wear at both the inner and outer sides of the garment.
If desired, the position of the separable the shank or by threads passing through the holes 8 as shown in Fig. 7
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made Without departing from the pirit of my invention.
What I claim is 1. A. separable tubular button shank having a peripheral flangeprovided With a plurality of holes adapted to receive securing threads, the flange being adapted to supfiopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Yatents "Washington, G.
