i SUBMARINE CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Mnosiro, a subject ot the Emperor of Austria, resident ot Belleville, county of St. Clair, and State otv Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Submarine Cutters, ot' which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to improvements in submarine vessels and has as its special object the provision ot' means whereby, should the vessel carrying the same come into intimate contact with netting, chains or like entanglements, to sever the same, permitting the submarine to pass through. A further object is to provide such devices in forms which can be readily applied to submarines as constructed without entailing material change in their structure.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination ot' parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying` drawings, forming a material part of this specification and in which- Figure l is a side elevational view showing the application of the invention to a submarine ot' conventional type.

In the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a conventional type of submergible vessel having attached at the bow or front end thereof, a plurality of rigid brackets 11, directed obliquely outward, other brackets 12 extending downwardly, the latter having engaged at their outermost ends, plates 1i formed with serrations 15, the same having beveled edges acting in the manner of shears in connection with the similarly formed beveled teeth 17 of an inner plate 16, mount-V ed to slide longitudinally of the plates 14..

rlhe movable horizontally disposed plates 16 and 22, have set in their inner surfaces rigid pins 28, engaged with which are links 3U, the same being secured at their opposite ends to rings 31 containing eccentrics 32, the latter of which are rigidly engaged upon the extreme outer end ot' shafts 33, disposed vertically near the center of the bow ot' the boat, other shafts 34, being arranged horizontally and operating the eccentrics at sides of the vessel as can best be seen in F ig. 4.
All of the several shafts have fixed upon their inner ends bevel gears 35, meshing with a central driving gear 36, which extends through the bow of the boat and .is attached to the shaft 38 of an electric motor 40 carried on board the boat, and to which current is conveyed by the wires 41 and 42 from a switch 43, to'which lead the,wires L14 and 45, from a source of electrical energy, as the battery 4G, on board the boat.
rIhe switch 43 is provided with a blade 48, the extending lever handle 49, of which is engaged with the collar 50, on sliding bar 51, which extends through the bow ot the boat 10, to some distance beyond the cutting blades and is engaged with a vertical bar 52 which, upon coming in contact to any article oiiering resistance, causes the shaft 51 to move inwardly, thereby closing` the switch and automatically causing current to be conveyed to the motor 4:0 which', through its connections, cause all of the several shear plates to be -put in operation and the plates being arranged in the manner indicated, rapidly clear away any entanglement by severing the wire, ropes, etc., of which they are composed, thereby permitting the vessel to pass through the opening. and it is to be noted that the side plates 2i and 25 are extended to such height above the deck of the vessel Aas to effect a passage for the superstructure as it is forcedfor- Y ward by the momentum or propelling mechanism of the vessel.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cutting device for submarines, the combination of a pair' of vertical plates rigidly disposed upon each side of the vessel,
another pair of horizontal plates disposed at the keel and upper deck-thereof, all-of saidV plates being at extreme end ont' the vessel, angularly projecting teeth adapted to act as shears formed upon all of the front edges of said plates and means for transmitting motion to the innermost of said plates whereby said teeth are caused to move reciprocatively with respect to the teeth upon the edges of said fixed plates,
2.
