To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CARL B. BICKEL, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the 'county of vErie andState of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fastening devices of that class andtype which are generally known as hooks and eyes, and it has particular reference to hooks and eyes `adapted to be applied to and used in connection with. shoes to take the place of buttons, laces or other fastening means as'now commonly employed. I

The invention has for its object to produce a hook and eye fastening which will be particularly adapted `for theend in view, both with respect to the attachment of the fastening members to the parts of the shoe to be connected thereby, 'and the specialconstruction whereby the connecting and disconnecting of the fastening members will be facilitated andY rendered effective.

A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the particular construction of the fastening members.

`With these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

ln the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to 'when desired.

Y V f Corresponding parts 1n the several figures Aare denoted by like characters of reference; The hook member A of the improved fastening device is formed of a piece of wire by first doubling the same on itself to form the nose piece l5, the doubled portion being subsequently bent to form a loop 16, a portion of which constitutes the hook 17. The ends of the wire are offset laterally to form the limbs 18, which are thus spaced apart and each of which is further bentvto form a laterally extending arm 19, one of which is further bent at 9.0 to increase the engaging area thereof. The hook portion 17 is bent intermediate its ends to deflect the nose 15 downwardly with respect to and between the limbs 18, which latter are also bent intermediate their endsV to form angular humps 2l facing the hump 22 which is formed by bending the hook to deflect the nose 15, as just described. It will be parhump 22 of the hook member will be disposed intermediate the bumped limbs 18, the apices of the opposed humps 21 and 22 ylying substantially in the same plane, thereby avoiding the necessity for straining the device to permit engagement with or disengagement from an eye member, as would be the case if the Y humps on the hook member and the limbs were directly opposed to each other.

The eye member B of the improved fastening device is formed by bending or doubling a piece of wire to form a loop 23, the limbs of which cross each other at 24C. said limbs Q5 being of suitable length to permit the attachment of the eye member to a shoe or other object-by means of a suitable tool contrived for the purpose. The eye portion. of the loop 23 is bent at an angle to the limbs 25, as best seen at 26 in Fig. 5.

In attaching the improved fastening members to the flaps of a shoe the limbs of the hook member may be inserted between the leather and the lining and secured by stitching. The eye members may be attached by means of a suitably contrived toolV whereby the limbs 25 are inserted through the leather and clenched to form eye portions 27, see F ig. 6, which will not only prevent the withdrawal of the eye member through the leather, but which will also prevent it from turning out of position.
