Be it known that l, JOHN Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hot Springs, in the county of Garland and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Clippers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair clippers.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device'of this character which is simple and inexpensive in construction and which may be used by persons not ordinarily engaged in the hair cutting trade and by those not expert therein.

A further object of the invention is the provision of such a device provided with an attachment whereby the hair will be cut or clipped to a uniform depth.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a guard or safety device to prevent accidental cutting of the flesh.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of means for adjusting the guard whereby the hair may be cut to a greater or less degree.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists' in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following description and drawings, in which,

lFig. 4 is a fragmental perspective lof the ard. guTn the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a handle which may be of any desired shape having a blade 2 secured thereto in any desired manner. This blade 2 is provided with longitudinally spaced perforations, the object of which will be presently described. The blade is adapted to receive a guard or safety device, the construction of which is more clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. This guard comprises a bodv portion 3 having a channel A formed therein adapted to receive the blade 2. An enlargement or rib 5 is formed on 'the upper edge of the body portion and teeth 6 extend upwardly from the rib 5 as is clearly shown in the drawings. The body portion 3 is provided with longitudinally spaced elongated openings 7 the purpose of which will be pr ently described. A tongue 8 is formed on that side of the body portion 3 opposite to the side containing the teeth and extends at right angles to the body portion, as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. This tongue 8 is adapted to be engaged for removing or adjusting the guard upon the blade. Bolts 9 are adapted to pass through the elongated openings 7 in the guard andthe perforations in the blade and thumb nuts 10 are adapted to be received on the threaded ends of the bolts.

The rib 5 which is on the same side of the guard as the tooth 6 serves as a rest for the cutter so as to maintain the same in spaced relation to the scalp as it is moved over the head thus preventing the thumb nuts 10 from becoming entangled or caught in the hair. As the front or upper face of the blade only is beveled inward toward the teeth of the guard the body of the guard and the inner faces of the teeth fit snugly against the under-face of the blade thus bringing the cutting edge of the blade Hush with the teeth. This insures that the hair will be engaged at an angle by the cutting edge of the blade, as the cutter is moved over the head, thus insuring that the hair is properly cut and enabling this operation to be performed with but little e'ort.

Having fully described the detailed construction of my device it is thought that the advantages will be understood. When in use the blade 2 is placed in the channel i of the body 3 and, as above stated, the bolts 9 pass through the elongated openings in the guard and the perforations in the blade. As is clearly shown, the teeth 6 project above the sharpened edge of the blade and form a guard or safety device whereby the blade cannot engage the iesh andthereby cut the same. When it is desired to clip or out the hair to a greater or less degree the guard may be adjusted upon the blade by merely loosening the thumb nuts 10 and adjusting the guard through means of the elongated openings 7. When it is desired to adjust or remove the guard it may be done by engaging the tongue 8 with the thumb. By pushing the tongue the guard may be either adjusted as desired or entirely removed from the. blade. The enlargement or rib 5 is of particular advantage while clipping the hair in that it will bear against the hair and cut the same at a uniform depth.

The teeth 6 will act as a comb for straightening the hair as well as acting as a safety device or guard, as above described.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to-secure by Letters Patent is In a cutter of the character described, a longitudinal cutting blade, a casing accommodat-ing the blade comprising parallel side walls which extend upon opposite sides of the blade and in contact therewith, a longitudinal wall connecting the side walls at one of their edges, tines formed upon the opposite longitudinal edge of one of the side walls, the side Walls being provided with registering openings removable fastenings passing through the openings and blade, and a rib formed upon the side wall that carries the tines adapted to contact with the human head, the rib extending the entire length of said wall and disposed forwardly of the removable fastenlngs and serving to prevent the hair from becoming entangled with the latter.
